The AFH and Luthuli
JSS Foundation Launch at
Dokodweni Beach
Marvellous Zondi
IT was a fruitful day at the soft launch of
JSS Foundation, an organization focusing
primarily at equipping people to be able to
help themselves fight hunger and improve the
quality of their lives.
This event was held at Dokodweni Beach,
between Gingindlovu and Mandeni, with
speeches delivered by the co-founders Mr.
Linda Zama and Ms Gugulami Zama. They
are descendants of the late Aldenville Higher
Primary School Principal, Jeremiah Sol Zama,
whom the organization is named after. This
school is situated at Groutville in KwaDukuza.
The late JSS Zama was described as a self
motivated individual who always tried to lay
a helping hand whenever he could, especially
through familiarizing community members
with new and efficient ways of modern
farming. He used to teach them on how to use
land to their advantage which is among the
reasons why the newly founded NGO caters
for these needs. In simpler terms, he was a real
life superhero.
Linda revealed that the organization plans
to expand into disaster management. In the
near future an institution which will mainly
focus on teaching Science and Agricultural
Studies, will be established in iLembe District
Municipality. Other projects that will be
under the JSS Foundation are LimaZulu and
Newly Opened Boxer Shop Brings
Opportunities to SMMEs at Mandeni
Marvellous Zondi
The popular Boxer retail shop opened
its doors for the first time at Mandeni,
at KwaGcaleka, on the 24th of March
2016.
The move to have the store located
just outside of the Mandeni Central
Business area, was welcome by smiles
from residents as they can now make
shopping closer to their homes. Since
Boxer is widely known and attracts a
huge number of customers, SMMEs
from in and around Sundumbili
township will now be introduced to
a huge number of customers as well.
Apart from being just a retail shop,
Boxer offers a lot to small businesses
based around this area.
They will be pleased to know that since
1995 Boxer has played an integral role
into uplifting SMMEs. It provides
intellectual support by imparting
years of acquired knowledge and clear
direction in order to help stimulate
SMMEs to either supply a product
or service to Boxer within the retail
industry. Business opportunities with
Boxer are listed in their website.
Ketlaphela to fast track
Thandeka Ngidi
A newly established state owned
pharmaceutical company,
Ketlaphela meaning “I will live”
will now be producing ARVs to fast
track the rollout of HIV treatment
to the whole of South Africa. This
was announced by President Jacob
Zuma on his State of the Nation
Address in February. Ketlaphela
which is based in Pretoria was
established in February 2015 and it’s
manufacturing plant is still under
construction.
According to the Department
of Science and Technology
spokesperson, Lunga Ngqengelele,
this company will not only source
and supply the drugs, but will also
supply other essential medicine
required by the Department of
Health. First Ketlaphela branded
tablets will be available at the
beginning of 2017. It is said that
this pharmaceutical company will
improve the availability of medicine
in government health facilities by
targeting the burden of diseases.
Other shocking news on the AIDS
pandemic include an announcement
by the Deputy Police Minister,
Maggie Sotyu, that about 88% of
SAPS employees is infected with
HIV/AIDS. Sotyu announced this
at a seminar hosted by the country’s
Parliamentary Police Portfolio
Committee in February. This
seminar was also aimed at focusing
on the high number of police
killings in the country. Sotyu said
that the AIDS ridden force include
both police officers and non-career
personnel. “The 88% include active
personnel, clerks, public service act
members and sweepers,” she said.
Completing and submitting tender documents
By Phumelela Projects
THIS is a continuation from the March
issue of SMME NEWS
Here are the golden rules for
completing and submitting tender
documents:
• Time – allow adequate time
to plan how you will complete the
documents on time and completely.
• Ensure document is complete
with no missing pages.
• Know well in advance
the place where tenders must be
submitted.
• Tenders have to be delivered
in “hard copy” originals i.e. no FAXES
or emails.
• All pages must be signed
• Ensure all supporting
documents are ready on time. (Note
Tax clearance certificate will take at
least a week to get from SARS)
Identify information resources of
available business and new markets
accessed through tendering processes.
From a supplier perspective the first
phase in winning a new and lucrative
contract, is the identification of
appropriate tenders that relate to the
goods or services that your company
can offer.
It can be quite daunting, trying to
find new business, for a business
person in a new venture. However,
there is no need to worry, companies
requiring goods and services want you
to find their tenders. They want you
to respond. Therefore, tenders can be
found on web-sites. They can be found
in trade journals and they can even be
found in your post box or email!
Almost all major companies have
web pages dedicated to tender and
business opportunities. Almost all
weekly newspapers, and most dailies,
have pages dedicated to tender
advertisements.
Typically, if you find a tender for
which you think may suit your goals
and objectives; you will need to either
download the relevant documents
from the company’s web site or you
will need to make contact with the
designated person who will either
email or post the relevant documents
to you.
Sometimes, you will need to register
your intent to respond to the tender
by either attending a compulsory
information session or by submitting a
letter of intent.
Analyze tender documents for viability
in the new venture context.
It is very easy to become overwhelmed
with tenders, whereas in reality it is
likely that only very few of them are
really suited to your business. It would
be stupid to be respond to every tender
that crosses your desk.
In a short time, you will be exhausted,
dispirited and insolvent. Responding
to tenders can be onerous and the
bigger ones can require thousands of
man-hours and hundreds of thousands
of rand to complete.
As in all sales efforts, the key is to
focus both on your target market and
your core competencies. It is essential
to assess the vailabity of the tender
before expending too many resources.
In fact, many companies have very
stringent criteria that are evaluated
in a BID/NO BID meeting as the first
stage of responding. Most companies
continue the BID/NO BID meetings
at regular intervals, evaluating their
ability to deliver on a technical level,
on a commercial level, on a legal
level and on a logistical level. If at any
time they feel that they would not be
able to realistically met the tender
requirements they make a decision to
either withdraw or to continue and
partially comply to the requirements
of the tender.
Analyzing viability is essentially
matching the requirements of the
tender with the goods and services
that you are potentially offering. There
needs to be high level equipment,
for example, they will generate a
profit & loss analysis to understand
the revenue and cost implications
over the lifetime of the goods.
Obviously they will also look at cash
flows and other financial ratios and
statements as well. But, what the client
is attempting to do, is to determine the
real cost of purchasing the required
equipment. No-body likes surprises
because it could end up costing the
tender evaluation team’s jobs, if they
make a serious error in judgement
and damage their company through
imprudent purchases.
To be continued
Neresh Gayapershad
Some of us were taught at an early
age that failure is a bad thing. When we
performed poorly on tests, we received
a failing grade. When a business goes
bankrupt or closes, it is said to fail. We
are constantly reminded every day that
failure is something negative. But what
about the positives of failure? There
are so many benefits to failing. I find it
difficult to argue that failure is anything
close to negative. Failure is a learning
experience. Above all else, failure is
an opportunity to learn; and there is
a lesson to be learned in every loss we
encounter. “I have not failed. I’ve just
found 10,000 ways that won’t work”,
said Thomas A. Edison.
This quote is great because it strips
failure of its negative influence. Failure
is simply a way something “won’t work”.
Instead of being a “lack of success”, it
becomes part of the process of trial
and error. Therefore, each idea we try
that doesn’t work brings us that much
closer to an idea that does. To that end,
experiencing failure is a necessary step
in arriving at success. Keep in mind, it
is very important you learn from every
failure and that the same failure isn’t
experienced twice. This could lead to
unnecessary wastes of time and money
and even possibly fatal mistakes. Failure
is something we have to get used to.
Failure, like marketing or accounting is
a normal business process. Because of
this, failure is something we must get
used to in order to survive. Failure is
such a common occurrence it should
come to be expected. Therefore, we
need to ensure that we develop thicker
skin if setbacks seem to bother us.
Get used to the fact that we will
experience more failures than
successes. This doesn’t make us failures.
Identifying opportunities and trying
to capitalize on them are valuable
skills that will add benefit. We are
not prophets, so it is impossible for
us to know which ideas, skills or
opportunities will be profitable. The
only way to know for sure is to try.
Probably the most important thing to
remember about failure is that it can’t
be avoided. Trying to avoid failure
will only prevent us from acting–and
there is more danger in not acting
than in failure itself. Failure shouldn’t
be taken lightly, but instead it must be
taken seriously. Because mistakes are
expensive, they should be studied to
ensure a lesson is learned.Even more
important, is to accept and make sure
we are able to identify a failure when it
occurs. If we can’t spot a failure when
it happens, mistakes will continue
until we learn to fix them. This can be
extremely costly and potentially fatal
for us.We must handle failures with
care by ensuring we can identify them
when they occur. Then, be sure to
pinpoint the lesson to be learned.
