Human rights art
NONTOBEKO DUMA
Art For Humanity (AFH)
held an exhibition of artwork
and poetry centred around
human rights at the KZNSA
Art Gallery. The art work on
display is from both national
and international artists.
This kind of exhibition is also
often held at Luthuli Museum
at Groutville, in KwaDukuza.
The house of the late famous
ANC President, Chief Albert
Luthuli, who was a writer,
farmer, teacher and deacon,
was turned into a museum
by KwaDukuza Municipality
to preserve his legacy. This
museum attracts visitors from
all over the world.
The AFH and Luthuli
Museum aim to promote
awareness of human rights
with the poetry and artwork
presented from various
perspectives giving a voice
to women’s rights, children’s
rights and civil rights. The
AFH has such a major impact
in human rights education
of AFH, Jan Jordaan, also
facilitates school workshops
that not only help, awaken
and nurture the creativity in
young people, but also raise
awareness of human rights.
These workshops have been
happening since 2006 in
places such as Umlazi and
Phoenix. Jordaan would like
the human rights to become
personal to the young people
and for them to be aware of
human rights violations that
take place around them.
He believes that more can be
done to the support arts just
like science and business,
with arts being held in the
same esteem. He went on
further to say, ”contrary to
popular belief artists see
things with a logical eye, and
to expect South Africa to be
a country of innovation but
to ignore the arts, is a big
problem” . Visit the AFH and
JSS Foundation Launch at
Dokodweni Beach
Marvellous Zondi
IT was a fruitful day at the soft launch of
JSS Foundation, an organization focusing
primarily at equipping people to be able to
help themselves fight hunger and improve the
quality of their lives.
This event was held at Dokodweni Beach,
between Gingindlovu and Mandeni, with
speeches delivered by the co-founders Mr.
Linda Zama and Ms Gugulami Zama. They
are descendants of the late Aldenville Higher
Primary School Principal, Jeremiah Sol Zama,
whom the organization is named after. This
school is situated at Groutville in KwaDukuza.
The late JSS Zama was described as a self
motivated individual who always tried to lay
a helping hand whenever he could, especially
through familiarizing community members
with new and efficient ways of modern
farming. He used to teach them on how to use
land to their advantage which is among the
reasons why the newly founded NGO caters
for these needs. In simpler terms, he was a real
life superhero.
Linda revealed that the organization plans
to expand into disaster management. In the
near future an institution which will mainly
focus on teaching Science and Agricultural
Studies, will be established in iLembe District
Municipality. Other projects that will be
under the JSS Foundation are LimaZulu and
Nomcabango Bursary Fund.
