Ex-Queenian wins tournament with Knights Colts
CHUX FOURIE
AYOUNG man who learnt his cricket
in these parts was part of the
winning team at the Colts Week
that ended in Potchefstroom at
the weekend.
Nathan Roux, son of Chris and Tracy,
left Queen’s College in 2016 and was a
stalwart in the school’s first XI for a
number of years. While he was still at
school he was also involved in cricket
development in Mlungisi and, when not
involved with Queen’s, he played for the
Northern Region Warriors, managed by
Viwe Yawa.
He is now doing the second year of a
BComm degree in investment
management and commercial banking at
the University of the Free State (also
known as Kovsies) and is a regular
member of their first cricket team.
He was selected to represent the
Knights Colts, which is the under 24 team
of the combined Free State-Griquas
franchise, at the Colts tournament in
Potchefstroom from March 14 to 18 and
batted at No.3, where he consistently
made some runs.
The Knights Colts ran out overall
winners at the end of the tournament.
His father, Chris, said, “It was fantastic
that he was selected. We were thrilled
and the fact that they won was just the
cherry on top”.
Furore over Kings player’s kick
IN WHAT was an entertaining
match between two tactical
sides that played with
contrasting styles of play, the
game between Holy Kings
Football Club (FC) and Valgas
FC was marred by a Kings
player who allegedly assaulted
referee Zukisa Rengqu after
the player was given a red
card for an infringement.
Ezibeleni side Holy Kings
enjoyed a home advantage at
the Ezibeleni Stadium where
they won their game against
Valgas 3-2, but the unruly
behaviour of one of their
players left supporters
s h o c ke d .
Holy Kings president Thando
Marubelela said they were
happy with the win, but
unhappy with the incident.
Marubelela said, “We do not
tolerate such behaviour. Even
if it is the first incident which
warranted him getting a red
card. As a team and
management we are going to
decide on a fitting
punishment.
“Soccer is a sport that
unites people. There were fans
who took the time to come
and support us, including
children.”
Valgas coach Archie Dyeli
said he felt after the referee
was assaulted, the game
should have been called off.
“As much as we do not have
the right to stop a match, I
think the referee should have
done so. There was no
securit y.”
He said Valgas had been
unable to convert their
opportunities as the team had
struggled to deal with the
aerial balls.
Safa Chris Hani deputy
president Mpiyake Xalabile,
who leads the judicial
committee that deals with all
legal matters and discipline,
said a letter would be sent to
the player.
“The player got a straight
red card according to the
r e fe r e e ’s report. The referee
said the offender kicked a
Valgas player while he was
lying on the ground. Such an
incident indicates that there
was no intention to kick the
ball.
“Such a player should get a
red card, because it looks like
an intentional offence. The
referee said that while he was
writing his notes, he did not
see the player return.”
The player then allegedly
kicked the referee on the
hand.
Xalabile said the player
would be suspended with
immediate effect and a
hearing would follow.
“The referee’s decision is
final. I did not know that the
referee had called off the
match. We will do an inquiry
into what happened. In the
match report it was said that
the match was stopped to
control the game, but the
referees decided to continue
with the game. We will talk to
all affected parties to find out
what had happened.”
