THE REPRESENTATIVE 16 March 2018
ROUND&ABOUT
Catch Ayanda on screen
AN OLD Queenian, Ayanda
Makayi, is making a name
for himself on stage and
screen and can currently be
seen in the new OLX
commercial/ad that forms part
of a new OLX campaign with the
well-known comedian Skhumba
Hlophe.
Ayanda, who matriculated at
Queen’s in 2010 and describes
himself as “actor/presenter/
MC/musician/casting director”
has also started on a new
telenovela (TV drama) called
“Hope” on Moja Love - a new
DSTV channel on 157 in which he
plays a homosexual character in
search of acceptance in a very
traditional Christian church.
He says, “I am currently in
Cape Town shooting a new TV
drama that is going to take
South Africa by storm. I can’t say
much right now apart from the
fact that it encompasses my
all-round artistic abilities and
not just acting... but watch this
space.”
Ayanda is one of the South
African UN Refugee Agency
ambassadors for the LuquLuqu
Campaign, established to
change the narrative of the
African refugee and shift the
perception of how we as
Africans view our fellow brothers
and sisters.
Among the ambassadors are
Nomzamo Mbatha, Anatii,
Leanne Mannas, Tressor, Goliath
and Goliath Brothers and
Ancillar Mangena.
A YOUNG Komani man was
recently placed in the top 10
in his field in the country.
Johan Grunewald of
Queenstown Nissan is the
working foreman at the
Green Street premises and
was born in East London. He
attended Port Rex Technical
High School and rounded
off his schooling as a
boarder at the Adelaide
Gymnasium after the family
had moved to Queenstown.
After completing school
he started work at Nissan as
an apprentice technician,
qualifying in two years
rather than the allotted four.
He is now studying towards
a master technician
qualification and thoroughly
enjoys what he does.
The Nistech competition is
held annually and this year
about 360 top technicians
entered.
They start with three
on-line tests, followed by a
competition in
Johannesburg where they
have to do a theory test and
then the practical – to find
faults on three vehicles, but
the faults have been built in
AT WORK: Johan Grunewald doing what he does best – using his laptop to diagnose the
fault in a vehicle
And just to see that there
is no skullduggery and
things run smoothly there is
an overseer from Japan to
check. Incidentally, these
tests are the same
worldwide and the same
faults are built in for all the
test vehicles.
All the marks are added
and the top 10 announced,
with Johan’s name among
them. This competition is
run every year and
competitors are allowed to
enter repeatedly. Don’t be
surprised if, before too long,
the name of this personable,
friendly young man from our
home town heads the list.
