Club Secretary
Mark Strydom as usual has handled this portfolio with distinction keeping all up to date and informed

Match Secretary
Without our “non playing Captain” Terry Bailey and her team we would certainly be chasing our tails, now that I have had
almost daily dealings with her, I realize how efficient and proficient she is and nothing is to much trouble. .The playing
numbers are down month on month compared to the previous year. The Oct 2016 game cannot be compared, as this
was Jimmy Sales’ anniversary game, and we had visiting Nomads from all around the country for this game, however as
it stands we are down an average of 14 rounds per game although 2018 started off very promising. Late payments and
referencing remain an issue and the viability of a debtors system is being investigated
Membership
Jarrod Williams has quickly adapted to his new job description while still looking after the Easterns website
The highlight of my year was awarding honourary membership to Philip Michaux and presenting Rob Wrighton with his
450 game badge.
Year to date we have inducted 12 new members
5 members resigned in good standing
1 member left in bad standing
Unfortunately we bid a final farewell to Mike Tarr, Vernon Langeveld, Clive Muller and Sue Kimber
There are currently 12 prospective nomads
Constitution
A special Thanks to Warren Brits, my go to guy of which constitutional affairs was but one item.

Treasurer
Dave Arnison has brought our books up to date and maintained them throughout the year. I would like to Thank Dave for
what he has done for Easterns through the years and particularly this past year, even although he had retired to Southern
Natal. This was not the ultimate situation but we could not find the right person for this position, however Graeme
Goodrich has come to our rescue and they are busy with the handover process.
We will present unaudited 2017 financial’s to this meeting and once completed by JD Hill make them available to all for
scrutiny and comment, however should you have any questions in this regard Graeme will happy to answer them.
Sponsorship
Les Matthews managed this portfolio ensuring that we have sponsors for the magazine and every monthly game, Mark
Ablett together with the sponsorship officer will be doing an extensive advertising drive for the magazine in the coming
year.
Golforama
Although Jimmy Sales has not been at his healthiest this past year one of Easterns Stalwarts has still fulfilled his
commitment’s, together with Les Floyd they assisted Swaziland Nomads with the Investec Cup as well as Lowveld
Nomads with Origins of Golf at Highland Gate.
The following Tournaments were supported by Easterns Nomads
7 Big Easy Tournaments
3 Middle East and North Africa (MENA )
3Sun International
Nedbank Golf Challenge
Joburg Open
S A Open
Tshwane Open
PGA Championship
Vusi Ngubeni Qualifying School
Sunshine Tour First Stage Qualifying School
Sunshine Tour Final Stage Qualyfing School
Two additional Tournaments were added namely Steyn City and the Tour Championships
PRO
During the first year of Glenbrynth’s National Sponsorship, the transition from the previous sponsor was relatively slow as
can be expected, however the lack of stock and an underperforming representative added to the problem. Since Mike
Nathan took over the region, stock has been made available to most of the clubs on the Easterns playing Calendar and
any special requests from Stephen Malherbe have been favourably answered. The distribution of the brand has also
increased and as a result is now freely available at Liquor stores across the East Rand. Easterns Nomads have taken to
the brand extremely well and as a result the brand has received the benefit that comes from the networking capacity of
Nomads.
Since the purchase of SAB Miller, the Castle Lite sponsor was changed to Stella Artois and cut by 6 cases per month
amongst other cutbacks. Easterns Nomads are still getting to grips with the Stella Artois brand, mainly due the price, and
with Castle Lite still being the preferred taste.
The Easterns Nomads facebook page has grown exponentially to the point that advertisement space is equivalent to that
of the magazine. Easterns Nomads facebook page will also be used to market its local and national sponsors by posting
and sharing specific adverts on a monthly basis.
Equipment and Clothing
Rob Gordon has sorted out stock levels and got rid of redundant stock. He is assisting Warren Brits who is responsible for
constitutional matters with the major task of replacing the altar.
Score Control
Bertus De Klerk did a sterling job and kept everyone on their toes.

Away Tours
The venue for the Diamond challenge between Easterns and Botswana was moved from Mafekeng to Sun City and this
proved to be a winner, the trip was oversubscribed as opposed to Rod Williams having to beg for participants, with people
already wanting to book spots for the next challenge on 7/8 July 2018
The Quadrangular and LES trophy was consolidated and the Glenbrynth Pentangular challenge created. The letter of
understanding was not followed by the organizing province resulting in two of the five provinces only fielding half of their
contingent, however this will be sorted out this year with Rod Williams agreeing to stay on another year to ensure that this
tour in particular is a success and fair to all as was originally intended. The venue at Highland Gate has been secured for
25/26 August 2018 and Easterns accommodation reserved.
Fielding full teams for the Highveld trophy has also become a problem and future organizers should possibly look at
combining this with future events where the three teams are involved.
The mystery Tour remains very popular due to Rod’s excellent organizing.
Awards and Prizes
It is Thanks to Derick Lindsay being so organized that we are able to have quick and effective prize giving’s with quality
prizes. A decision was taken to rather allocate the money spent on draw prizes and bad play to the deserved winners.
Derick will also be co ordinating our 40 th anniversary in May and we ask you to support him.
Tempest IKO Swindle
Europcar will in future be sponsoring this competition. A great big Thank you to Peter Retief from Europcar and Tempest
Car Hire for their continued sponsorship of the main prize which includes a 4 Night stay at a Southern Suns hotel, 4 days
car hire and 2 return air tickets besides the R3150.00 for winning the pool. All 16 Pool winners received R3150.00
Magazine
I would like to thank Jack Herzfield for the time and effort he has put into editing our magazine for the past 15 years
however due to ill health Jack has been forced to take a break. This year we did away with the hard copy as a cost saving
exercise (+- R6.5K per month) and due to it being an unnecessary duplication, thus only having to pay for the formatting.
We have now gone a step further and purchased our own improved package with the only fee being a minimal annual
license which now allows us to do the magazine in house a saving of +- R34.5K per year.
National Tournament
We were allocated 41 spots which we were originally able to fill plus a reserve however due to various reasons we ended
up with 38. Easterns ended 2 nd overall – a great result for an inland team at a coastal nationals.
Although the building of the altar which went missing has been completed quite a while back we are still trying to collate
information by means of old magazines and photos due to the engraver’s hard drive who did the last upgrade having
crashed, however it has been decided to go ahead with the info available and updating when available and together with
the cloth remains a work in progress.
Easterns remains sound in all departments although the dwindling rounds per game is disturbing, it has been an absolute
pleasure working with the fantastic committee, that served the club this past year and to whom I am most greatful.
Although there were late changes they have made it easy for the incoming committee to pick up the ball and run.
Congratulations to Mark and his incoming committee you can count on my support and assistance should it be required.
Yours in Nomads
Mike Fick
