Tai Sing Lee Professor, Computer Science Department and the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition, CMU Adjunct professor, Neuroscience Department, University of Pittsburgh. Director, Lee Laboratory for Biological and Machine Intelligence Research, CMU Dr. Lee’s research involves the application of computational, modeling, and neurophysiological techniques to study the neural basis of visual perception and recognition, with the view to utilizing these underlying principles to advance machine learning and computer vision. He studies the role of recurrent circuits in the hierarchical visual system in solving visual problems and how such circuits can be learned from natural scenes. He received the NSF Career award and the ICCV Helmholtz Prize for his works in computer vision and interdisciplinary research, and was involved in Project MICrONS (Machine Learning from Cortical Networks) at CMU to reverse engineer the brain in order to develop new machine learning models. Andrew Schwartz Distinguished Professor, Neurobiology, University of Pittsburgh Chair, Systems Neuroscience Adjunct Professor, Robotics Institute, CMU Dr. Schwartz received his PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1984. He then went on to a postdoctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Schwartz teamed up with engineering colleagues to develop cortical neural prosthetics. The work has progressed to the point that human subjects can now use these recorded signals to control motorized arm and hand prosthetics to feed themselves and perform other tasks of daily living. In addition, he has continued to utilize the neural trajectory representation to better understand the transformation from intended to actual movement using motor illusions in a virtual reality environment. 20
PANELS Brain Technology Panel Byron Yu, Panel Moderator Associate Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, CMU Byron Yu’s studies focus on neural signal processing and neural prosthetic system. He aims to elucidate how large populations of neurons process information. He and his group also develop novel machine learning algorithms that reveal how these large populations of neurons work together to give rise to brain function. He seeks to apply his scientific understanding to the design of next-generation biomedical devices, such as brain computer interfaces. Max Newlon Research Scientist, BrainCo Human Development and Psychology, EdM, Harvard Graduate School of Education Max Newlon is a research scientist at BrainCo, where he leads the product definition team responsible for matching BrainCo’s BMI technology to real market needs. He holds a master’s degree from Harvard Graduate School of Education in human development and psychology. He spent 3 years helping conduct neuroscience research at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he studied the impact of meditation and yoga on the brain, and at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where his team investigated the clinical outcomes of patients with neurological disorders.
