From canoeing at Kerrs Reach
to representing NZ in Bulgaria
• By Sophie Cornish
PARKLANDS’ PIETA Luthi
will be the youngest member
of the New Zealand team at a
world championship canoeing
event in July.
The 16-year-old will compete
in the International Canoe
Federation canoe sprint
junior and under-23 world
championships in Bulgaria.
Pieta will join the New
Zealand under-18 team and
travel to
Europe for
the event.
In spite of
only being
involved
with canoe
racing
for three
seasons,
Pieta Luthi
this will
be Pieta’s
second time
representing New Zealand,
In February, she represented
her country at the canoe sprint
Oceania championships and
Grand Prix 2 in Sydney.
Her success continued later
that month when she competed
at the NZCT New Zealand
canoe sprint championships
on Lake Karapiro, Cambridge,
and took home 10 medals. Pieta
said it was her most successful
regatta to date, winning medals
for both individual and crew
events in two separate age
groups – under-16 and under-18.
She raced under her club colours
for the Arawa Canoe Club,
which trains at Kerrs Reach.
It will be Pieta’s first time
SPORTS
IN ACTION: Pieta Luthi will travel to Bulgaria in July as the
youngest athlete in the New Zealand under-18 canoeing
team.
travelling to Bulgaria and she is
excited to have family travelling
from Switzerland to support her.
“I’m a little bit nervous, I’m
not really too sure what to
expect . . . it will be cool to be on
a bigger world stage,” she said.
STOKED: Johnny Tuivasa-Sheck, brother to Warriors captain
Roger, helped inspire Linwood Avenue School to win the
Canterbury year 5 and 6 rugby league tournament.
inspires Linwood Ave
A TUIVASA-SHECK helped
inspire Linwood Avenue School to
win the Canterbury year 5 and 6
rugby league tournament.
But it wasn’t Warriors captain
Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.
His younger brother Johnny,
who has a fan engagement role
with the NRL franchise, was at
the tournament and helped power
Linwood to victory in a tight final.
Linwood defeated Te Waka
Unua School 16-12 in the decider.
The one-day competition, held
annually at South Hagley Park,
was organised by Primary Sports
Canterbury and Canterbury
Rugby League.
The team spent five weeks
training twice a week, said coach
Colin Hill.
He said the boys were “stoked”
to get a photo with Tuivasa-Sheck,
who was at the tournament to
promote the upcoming Warriors
v Manly Sea Eagles game in
Christchurch on June 9.
