PROPOSAL 11: Digitalised Collections Digitalised Collections: Transforming the online experience of collections with Augmented Reality. Concept: Cultural Archives are increasingly digitalising their collections to make them more accessible to a range of audiences online. Digitalising collections provide benefits for Cultural Archives because it is a form of digital preservation. It ensures the longevity of the objects and the historical or cultural context that surrounds them, for the knowledge and understanding of future generations to come. Although this a huge task for Cultural Archives the presentation of the collections online are still very two dimensional. Using Augmented Reality (AR) which is now available on mobile and desktop devices, it would allow users to interact with 3D versions of the objects from the collections online. AR technology brings virtual content and objects into our real world. This allows the user to see the physicality of the object and interact with it; rotate, zoom, move etc. The user will be able to move around the object in their own environment and therefore better understand its detail. 3D model viewers available on browsers will allow the user to view a Cultural Archives’ collection in 3D and interact with each of the virtual objects. PROPOSAL 11: Digitalised Collections / Continued This would be an invaluable opportunity for education if schools in remote locations cannot access Cultural Archives. The use of technology could overcome the lack of resources as AR would bring these experiences to the classroom and would connect the students to the objects. This could also be revolutionary for artists, creatives, students and designers who want to view the objects in 3D for inspiration for projects.
