Learning to defend yourself is an invaluable skill
Amanda Stoll
a.stoll@22ndcenturymedia.com
Thursday, women from
all over the area will
attend a class and
learn to defend themselves
during situations no person
hopes to ever find themselves
in.
It’s unfortunate that we
have to worry about being
attacked, but the skills required
to defend oneself are
some of the most valuable
there are.
Last year, I not only wrote
about the One Light Self-
Defense course hosted by
Margo McDermed’s office,
but I took the class, as well.
For many assignments
I will stay for part of an
event, take some photos,
interview a few people and
then head home. All in a
days work, right?
NEIGHBORS
From Page 14
Frankfort Village Board
During its April 16 meeting,
the Frankfort Village
Board presented a proclamation
honoring Hickory Creek
Middle School eighth-grader
Dominic Adamo, who made
school history this year by
winning Hickory Creek’s
first state wrestling title.
In March, Adamo
wrapped up an undefeated
37-0 season by winning the
155-pound title at the 2018
Illinois Elementary School
Association state wrestling
But, I decided to stay and
participate for that one, and
I’m sure glad I did.
The instructors from One
Lights tackled a not-so-nice
topic with tact, and even a
little humor, while staying
focused and sharing their
knowledge, safety tips and
defensive moves with the
group.
Throwing kicks and
punches blindly and without
technique is not what selfdefense
courses teach, but
you do not have to be a
professional boxer or even
a muscular woman to do
them.
The idea of many of the
moves was to throw your attacker
off balance, off guard
or hit them in a way that
would give you a window
to escape. Whether it be
a wrist grab or someone
coming up behind you, they
covered a lot of different
situations.
Theirs is the only class
I have taken, so I cannot
speak to it in comparison
to others, but I certainly
feel adequately equipped
to defend myself should
someone sneak up on me in
a parking lot or grab me on
the sidewalk.
tournament at Northern Illinois
University in DeKalb.
His state tournament record
was 4-0, including a victory
over two-time state wrestling
champion Maurice Edwards
during the final match.
Several Village trustees
offered their congratulations
to Adamo, as well, and
Trustee Cindy Heath called
Adamo’s championship an
“outstanding achievement.”
“My husband wrestled all
through high school and college,
and so I know how hard
it is always trying to make
weight,” she said. “You’re
out there by yourself. …
During the class, you
will also learn statistics
about assault and how to
avoid risky situations that
could lead to trouble. If
you do have to walk to
your car at night at the
grocery store with your
hands full, they will help
you know how to stay alert
in case a dangerous situation
were to arise.
By now, class sign-ups
may be maxed out, but if it
is something you are interested
in I highly recommend
calling to find out if you can
still take the class tonight.
(More information on Page
8)
If that’s the case, or if
you’re reading this after the
fact, that’s OK, too. Many
places in the area such as
martial arts studios, police
departments and even libraries
have started hosting
self-defense courses.
The may not be free like
the one hosted tonight, but
you can not put a price on
the knowledge and skills
you will learn at a class like
this.
Yes, the class is free, but
the people who run the class
are part of an organization
that not only teaches women
When I heard that you’re
never nervous, that’s really
statement of your character,
that you can just go out there
and do that. And 37-0 is just
incredible.”
Adamo said he was honored,
and thanked his family,
Hickory Creek coach
Josh Napier, Hickory Creek
Principal Will Seidelmann
and Frankfort School District
157-C Superintendent
Maura Zinni for their support
throughout the year.
abuse and trafficking
to help them heal.
If you attend the class,
or just feel compelled to
contribute to the cause,
please consider donating to
One Light Self-Defense.
The individuals who
volunteer do so on their own
time and with their own
funds, so none of the money
donated goes to pay for
their personal costs. That’s
the way they want it, but in
return a donation to their
organization is appreciated.
As much as I would like
to hope none of us will
ever need to use the skills
learned at a class like this,
that is not reasonable.
Do yourself and your
loved ones a solid. Sign
up for a self-defense class
— guys, too! — and make
yourself a little safer and a
little more prepared.
