Genesis VR offers a slew of more than 40 games or, as Schoeling calls them, “experiences” to players of all ages. “There are so many different things we can offer,” he said. “Not all of them are games. Some of them are experiences, so to speak. We have things like height experiences, downhill skiing, haunted houses, escape rooms. There are tons of different things you can do inside these games.” One experience Schoeling recommends to everyone who comes in to Genesis VR is Richie’s Plank Experience, developed by Toast VR. The game invites users to board an elevator, which takes them to the 80th floor of a simulated skyscraper. When the door opens and nothing but a thin wooden board awaits, the user is encouraged to test their fear of heights by walking out on the plank. “The second they put on that headset, they lose all sense of being on flat ground,” Schoeling explained. “All of a sudden, they’re like squatting down to the floor and losing their balance, trying to stay steady as they walk across this imaginary plank. It just shows you how much it can actually throw off your brain when you’re inside the headset.” Schoeling describes the virtual reality experience as “full extent.” “Because, it’s such a different world when you finally put that headset on,” he added. Genesis VR opened late winter in New Lenox’s Nelson Plaza shopping center, and so far, Schoeling said it’s been game-on with the community. “Business has been going pretty good,” he says. “Being a new business, I can’t complain.” Joe Sietz (left) and Max Velarde, both of New Lenox, play Genesis VR’s two coin-operated arcade machines. Jonathan Samples/22nd Century Media Before deciding to open Genesis VR, Schoeling first tried his hand at college. He attended Joliet Junior College for two years before transferring to Olivet Nazarene University, where he planned to major in chemical engineering and physics. But it was during a recent vacation to Kalamazoo, Michigan, that Schoeling got his first taste of virtual reality – a chance encounter that prompted the college student to put school on pause and focus exclusively on video games. “While I was up there, there was a new virtual reality arcade that opened up, and I went there a few times before I’d got the idea,” he says. “It finally hit me about a month or so after the vacation that I’ve been searching all over, when this great idea is right here in front of me.” With help from his mom, Julie Schoeling, he was able to turn that idea into a business plan. “I told him, if he had a good plan, I’d help him get started,” she said. “He’s really passionate about this stuff.” The family loan gave Schoeling the capital he needed to start Genesis VR, including the space, a staff and four virtual reality systems – each of which can run upwards of $2,000, according to Schoeling. It costs $25 per hour to rent one of the four VR rooms, which can accommodate groups of up to four people. Each room has one gaming headset and a monitor showing others in the group what’s going on inside the headset. That doesn’t mean the other people in the room are left out, Schoeling said. “You have to take turns, but everyone gets involved with the person playing and vice versa,” he said. “They can see what’s on the screen when the person’s playing, so it’s still super interactive, whether you’re playing or waiting your turn. Everybody still has a really good time.” And speaking of a good time, Schoeling is right alongside his customers when it comes to game appreciation. His favorite, Raw Data, is a wave-survival game that pits a player against continuous waves of evil robots. But, Schoeling admits that he goes through phases. His mom, on the other hand, only has one game on her mind. “My favorite game is To The Top, hands down,” she says, enthusiastically. “I’m only four seconds away from beating his high score. I’m on a mission to beat his high score.” Genesis VR is open Sunday through Thursday from 2-10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 2 p.m.-midnight. Walk-ins are welcome, but gamers are encouraged to call ahead to book a room. For more information, visit www.gvr-nl.com or the store’s Facebook page.
