Spending a drizzly, mid-
April afternoon indoors sipping
on Woggley Square
Brewing Company’s Flaming
Golden Hawk might sound to
some to be a good way to enjoy
the day. Throw in that the
brew was featured at Mokenabased
Crafted Bottle Shop and
Tap Room, and that all of the
proceeds went to benefit Lincolnway
Special Recreation
Association programs, and
you’ve got yourself something
to toast to.
That was the case April 14,
as the brewing company and
tap room combined to raise
about $1,000 for LWSRA.
Woggly Square was founded
by brothers John and Mark
Newton. John’s son Matthew
is autistic, and he was the inspiration
for not only the company’s
name, but also for its
mission to donate 10 percent
of net profits to autism related
charities and research, and
provide workforce training to
people with autism once they
age out of other programs
when they turn 21 years old.
John admits that he didn’t
know much about autism before
Matthew came along,
but has gotten a “crash
course” in the disorder that
affects more than 2 million
people in the U.S. alone.
John said LWSRA was
chosen specifically to be the
beneficiary of the April 14
event because of the close
relationship he and his family
have developed with the organization
through Matthew.
“It’s not just the cause, it’s
not just how they do it, but
it’s the people there who we
really connected with,” John
said. “I consider them very
good friends. I really love
what they’re doing. I love
what they’ve done for my
son. So, when we decided
As always, the grand
prize-winning photo from
our seven southwest suburban
winner also is to receive a
prize package, which you
can read all about in the accompanying
sidebar.
Other entries also may
appear in the May 17 edition
of The Patriot.
Photos must be submitted
a phone number at which
that we’re going to get this
thing going, [LWSRA] was
the obvious choice for us.”
The inherent level of cooperation
among those in
the crafted beer community
means that collaboration
between brewers such as
Woggley Square and venues
such as Crafted is frequent
and common.
“To me, the people who
are willing to grow craft
beer would be willing to
spend their time doing charity,
especially with a great
beer like [Flaming Golden
Hawk,” said Crafted cofounder
Dan Rusnak.
“Dan and I have talked
about having a chance to
posted on the websites of
all seven newspapers.
Entries will be judged
based on photo quality,
originality, capturing the
essence of vacation, emphasis
on summer and ability
to fit the theme.
Residents of Orland Park,
Tinley Park, Frankfort, Mokena,
New Lenox, Homer
Glen and Lockport are eligible
to enter.
give back,” added Crafted
co-founder Denver Worker.”
...With [the help of others],
we wouldn’t have gotten to
where we are right now, and
we want to continue to give
back to the community, we
want to be a part of the community,
we want this to be a
community-based building
where people come in and
enjoy and share and have a
good time and talk.”
