What might have
topped the Deerfield
Invitational title on
April 14 is a huge
come-from-behind
win over Lockport
on April 17. More
importantly, the girls
smashed the program’s
wins record.
2. LWW boys water polo
The Warriors’ boys
side has never had a
winning record. As of
April 17, they have a
9-7-2 record. If leader
Josh Carlson continues
to score at a high
clip, both sides of the
program will break
school win records.
Central is keeping
its consistency. A
win over Bradley-
Bourbonnais on April
19 continues the
Knights’ undefeated
conference record
and an impressive
16-5 season record.
On a night filled with huge
momentum swings, it was a
set Providence lost that actually
turned the tide in the
Celtics’ favor for good on
April 16.
Down 17-7 in the opening
set, the Celtics seemed to be
in danger of being run off
the court by crosstown rival
Lincoln-Way Central.
Visiting Providence,
though, was able to rally for
a 21-25, 25-21, 25-20 win.
“We went on a huge run
to get back in that first set,”
senior middle blocker Aidan
McGinty said. “We ended up
losing the set, but we were
able to carry over that play
into the last two games.”
Ike Papes had 12 kills and
five blocks, while Homer
Glen resident Steven Wedemeier
finished with 20 assists,
five kills and four blocks for
Providence (9-7-1).
Jack Yurkanin and George
Hinchcliffe led the Knights
(10-6) with eight kills each,
while Sebastian Olmos finished
with 21 digs.
It was the serving of Mc-
Ginty (4 aces, 13 service
points) and Mokena resident
Jack Patterson (3 aces) that
got the Celtics moving in the
right direction.
Central was cruising in
the first set until Providence
reeled off nine straight
points, with Patterson serving
for the final eight.
“Jack Patterson is a big
server,” Central coach Mary
Brown said. “He started getting
them a lot of points that
way, and that rattled us.”
The Knights put it back together
to pull out the first set,
getting a big ace from Jack
Yurkanin and key kills from
Luke Handley and Garrett
McCrea.
Providence, though, was
feeling good about its chances
the rest of the way.
“We felt like Central got
too comfortable,” McGinty
said. “We got that momentum,
and they couldn’t come
back.”
The second set was nipand-tuck
throughout until
the Celtics scored three
straight points to turn a 19-
18 lead into a 22-18 edge.
Papes had a kill and Mc-
Ginty delivered a block during
the surge. An ace from
Alexander Zawacki sealed
the set for Providence.
“We started communicating
more as the match
went on and we didn’t hang
our heads when we made a
mistake,” Providence coach
Kyle Klaver said. “Early in
the match, when we made a
mistake we got a little tight
and a little scared, but once
we got over that, we were in
good shape.
“We preached just sticking
with the game plan, keeping
it simple and executing what
we do in practice.”
Patterson said Providence’s
intensity and passion
helped carry it to the
victory.
“Everyone gets energy going,”
he said. “Even when I
got taken out the first game,
I still had to have that energy
and tried to bring the team
up from the bench.”
Central’s final lead of the
night came at 1-0 in the third
set. Providence went on a
6-1 run from there to take
control, sparked by three
aces from Patterson.
Yurkanin did his best to
keep the Knights in it, producing
six kills in the set.
Central closed within one
point six times but could
never get over the hump.
Central’s last surge came
when a Hinchcliffe kill and
a Providence error cut the
Celtics’ lead to 21-20, but
Providence scored the final
four points of the match.
Wedemeier had a kill and a
Knights’ Brendan McCarthy (right) reaches to tip the ball
over the net.
block on consecutive points
to close out the victory.
Providence avenged an
earlier loss to the Knights in
the Marist Invitational.
“Lincoln-Way Central is
a tough team with a lot of
offensive options,” Klaver
said. “We definitely had this
match circled on our calendar
after our loss to them
earlier in the season. To
