22 | April 26, 2018 | The wilmette beacon NEWS wilmettebeacon.com A Word From The (Former) President More news flashes from days of yore John Jacoby Contributing Columnist •Nov. 30, 1904: The Wilmette Woman’s Club meets today, hoping to resolve a “row” that “threatens to disrupt the organization unless an amicable settlement can be reached.” The issue is whether the Club’s constitution should require members to pay a fee of 50 cents for bringing a guest to a meeting. The membership appears to be equally divided on the issue. • Aug. 5, 1923: Willie Doser, 30, committed suicide while jailed at Evanston’s police headquarters. He was awaiting trial on charges that he broke into a chewing gum machine. He was the son of the late Willibald Doser, once a prominent Gross Point resident and physician. Two decades ago, Willie and his parents became hooked on cocaine, and the entire family fell into ruin and homelessness. The father committed suicide in 1907. • July 18, 1933: General Italo Balbo, the Italian Air Marshall and fascist leader, was the guest today of architect Benjamin Marshall at his Wilmette Harbor mansion. Balbo arrived in Chicago on July 15, leading a squadron of 24 seaplanes to celebrate the “Century of Progress” World’s Fair. He’ll start back for Italy tomorrow. Upon seeing the Chinese pagoda room of the Marshall mansion, carpeted by a satin mattress, Balboa asked in Italian, “Why do you bring us here when we are but men?” Then in the living room, he lamented, “I am dismayed that we have not come to your beautiful home before the eve of our departure.” • July 24, 1934: The proprietors of four barbecue stands and one liquor store in “No Man’s Land” (the unincorporated triangle between Wilmette and Kenilworth along Sheridan Road) were arrested by County police for illegally selling liquor in a “dry” territory and without a County license. The raid was prompted by complaints. • Aug. 17, 1960: Theodore Vassar, 17, escaped from detention at the Wilmette Police Department on Green Bay Road. He was being held in Wilmette pending transfer to Northfield to face burglary charges there. He escaped by prying open a window screen. His next mistake was returning to the scene of the original burglary and breaking in again. Police were still there, investigating the first crime, and they arrested him a second time. Vassar, a native of Texas, admitted that he had been “banished from Abilene for two years after he got into trouble there.” • April 8, 1966: Two Wilmette families were among 494 passengers and crew members rescued today when flames engulfed the superstructure of the Viking Princess as the ship was sailing in the Caribbean off Cuba. The passengers and crew abandoned ship in lifeboats and were picked up by other ships in the area and taken to Guantanamo naval base. Two passengers died of heart attacks during the turmoil. The Wilmette families were Robert and Dorothy Bauerle and their daughter Virginia of 1034 Pawnee Road; and Arnold and Lisa Stein and their children Andrea and Nicky of 2749 Wilmette Ave. An advertisement promoting the tour correctly predicted a “memorable vacation” and an “unexpected adventure.” • May 27, 1979: Four members of Wilmette’s Sutton family were among 273 people killed when an American Airlines DC-10, bound from A Wilmette police officer inspects the window screen pried open by detainee Theodore Vassar. Photo submitted O’Hare to Los Angeles, crashed shortly after take-off. The accident is the deadliest in U.S. aviation history. It happened when the left engine and pylon separated from the wing and inflicted damage elsewhere. Stephen and Carolyn Sutton and their two boys, Colin, 9, and Chris, 7, lived in the 1400 block of Forest Avenue. Stephen was a senior editor at Rand McNally and edited Jeannie Morris’s book about Chicago Bears star Brian Piccolo. Stephen was planning to attend a bookseller’s convention in Los Angeles. The boys, students at McKenzie School, were excited about the prospect of visiting Disneyland. THE HIGHLAND PARK LANDMARK Two dead in overnight house fire in Highland Park Two people are dead after a fire engulfed a Highland Park home early April 18, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The Highland Park Fire Department was joined by 10 other departments in response to a house fire at 1:13 a.m. in the 2000 block of Kipling Lane, according to a press release from the Village of Highland Park. “At this point, it looks like we are still investigating everything,” said Howard Cooper, the Lake County coroner. “We are right in the middle of investigating.” At the scene, firefighters were met by “heavy smoke and flames” that kept them from entering the home, the release states. THE LAKE FOREST LEADER $66K study approved for erosion issues at Sunrise Park and Beach In an effort to protect Sunrise Park and Beach from erosion and other damaging factors, the Lake Bluff Park District Board approved a proposal to invest in a study on the beach at its regular meeting Monday, April 16. The board approved a proposal for a study done by AECOM, an engineering firm based in Chicago. The study will cost the Park District $66,800, and is a “starting point” toward fixing the problems the beach is facing, according to Brock Gordon, the vice president of the board. THE WINNETKA CURRENT Wintrust bank set to open at Youngren Cleaners spot Soon, Youngren Cleaners will be out of its longtime location in the Village of Northfield. A Wintrust Community Bank branch will be moving in to the location at 1852 Willow Road. The Northfield Village Board unanimously approved a special-use permit for Wintrust Community Bank to construct a bank branch with a drivethrough facility and ATM on the property at its Tuesday, April 17 meeting.
