Regina’s run ends in Pepsi Showdown finals
Michael Wojtychiw
Sports Editor
Regina Dominican came
into Sunday, April 22’s
Pepsi Showdown championship
game against Pritzker
looking to do something
no team in program
history had done: win what
is billed as the nation’s
largest high school soccer
tournament.
Unfortunately for the
Panthers, their run to the
Coast Guard division title
game stopped a game short,
dropping the tilt 7-0 to the
Jaguars on a beautiful
spring day in La Grange.
Despite the loss, firstyear
coach Katie Bak
couldn’t have been prouder
of what the team has been
able to accomplish.
“What’s great about this
group of girls is that they
play and play and play and
play,” Bak said. “It’d be
wrong of me to say that we
expected or didn’t expect
anything because these
girls continue to amaze me
every day.”
The Panthers have been
playing so well as of late,
that they hadn’t given up
a goal since March 20 in a
2-0 loss to Francis Parker.
What’s been really impressive
for the team is that it
has done this with 14 freshmen
and sophomores on
the varsity squad.
“This is about building
a program and every step
we take is a piece of that
program and this is just one
of those steps,” the coach
said. “I’ve got a young
team, where exposure like
Regina’s Lilly Rausch kicks the ball upfield against
Pritzker Sunday, April 22, in La Grange. Michael
Wojtychiw/22nd Century Media
this and competition like
this, it’s all a confidence
builder.
“All of our girls are expected
to have a voice and
be a contributor at practice,
in the classroom, on the
field.”
The PepsiCo Showdown
showed Regina and its
coaches a lot about what
type of team it can and
will be the rest of the season,
one in which the Panthers
haven’t had much of
a chance to play due to the
weather.
“What’s great about
this team is that we’re still
learning on playing together,
but they are together as a
unit off the field,” Bak said.
“Practices are team-oriented
and they’re together
and that leads to wins on
the field. They have each
other’s backs and fight for
each other, are with each
other, no matter the outcome.
“The hardest thing with
the weather has been building
a routine. It’s every day,
we feel like we’re adjusting
and getting a consistent
flow has been the hardest
thing for our schedule.”
While the Panthers
didn’t end up winning the
tournament’s title, it had an
incredible run, especially
considering they came in as
the 13th-seeded team in the
Coast Guard bracket.
Here’s how Regina made
it to the finals:
Regina 4, Garcia 0: The
Panthers played the game
with only eight available
players, but yet were able
to beat the sixth-seeded Patriots.
Lilly Rausch scored
a hat trick for her team and
freshman Laura Strenk
added a goal as well.
Regina 1, Solorio 0
(PKs): The Panthers went
on the road and pulled off
a penalty-kick win thanks
to Strenk, Rausch, Murphy
Weiland and Kathleen Rabbitt
converting on their opportunities.
Freshman goalie
Vickie Mando made 11
saves in the game, including
a key one during PKs.
Regina 1, Romeoville 0:
Anelise Leahy scored the
Panthers’ only goal to send
her team to the title game.
