A fantastic effort by all students and staff at the academy supporting one of their own! Outstanding Sporting Achievements The annual Sports Awards Evening celebrated achievements in a wide range of sporting activities from the previous year. Students were recognised for exceptional progress or outstanding achievement. Over 90 students were awarded certificates throughout the evening. The guest speaker was Olympian Ashley McKenzie, currently ranked number one in British Judo. Pictured with him is Eva Rawson who received the overall TNHA Sports Person of the Year 2018. 6 7 Invention Of The World Wide Web Students recently undertook a project around the history of the internet, its impact on our everyday life and various uses. They contemplated just how different life would be without its invention and how it may be used in the future. Jill Hambright Swaffham Jazz Club Imagine you are running your local football team and just as you are about to kick off a guy turns up clutching a pair of football boots and asks if he can have a game. He looks fit enough to play , so you say “OK, hang about.“ Eventually you send him on and he scores a goal. After the game you ask him where he comes from. “Just round the corner” he says. What a find! This is just what happened at our April session. A guy turns up clutching a saxophone case just as the band is ready to play and asks to sit in. They play a few numbers then invite him to join them. He plays superbly and the audience love him. After the session I ask him “Where do you come from?” “Five minutes walk away” he says. What a find! His name is David Taylor and he moved to Swaffham in December! As well as Dave’s tenor playing, other highlights included a fine solo from pianist Mark Ferguson in Miles Davis’ All Blues. In a Sentimental Mood was performed as a beautiful slow Ballard by Myke Clifford on tenor sax, and Colin Mason demonstrated his masterful technique with brushes in Satin Doll. Fly Me to the Moon was graced by a wonderful episode when Myke Clifford on flute duetted with Chris Kirk on trumpet. It was as though two beautiful butterflies were circling around each other in a garden. Myke Smith on bass played several solos, the best during an up tempo version of Autumn Leaves and Myke Clifford showed how he can be just as virtuosic on the clarinet as on sax and flute, in It’s Only a Paper Moon. Looking forward, we have arranged an extra session in May when jazz singer Helen Welch from the US is available during her current tour. In her career she has sung with many notable musicians, including Johnny Dankworth. Future Events: Tuesday 8th May Swing That Thing Sextet Tuesday 15th May Helen Welch singer, with backing group led by Lee Vasey, guitar. 7.30 pm Swaffham Conservative Club, London Street, PE37 7DD Entry £7 on the door.
