International Sunday 13 May

To Boldly go...
After a lot of unusual weather, “the Beast
from the East” has finally gone and the
arrival of May heralds the summer!
We have a number of things to look
forward to this month including the visit
of Dick Dowsett - an experienced, well
travelled and informed missiologist. His
passion is China, his heart is for the
nations. He joins us for International
Sunday on 13 May.
He is sandwiched between a Vision and a
Giving Sunday. Every year we like to focus
on the nature of who we are as a Church
family and what that means in terms of
our mission and purpose going forward.
You can read a little more about that
later.
We’ll be reflecting on our recent season
of prayer, looking at the big picture of our
prolonged journey “without walls” and
responding to the delay with faith and
finance.
Our perspective on those aspects will be
shaped by the new Sunday morning
teaching series from Acts, “To Boldly
Go”.
Swiss theologian Emil Brunner once
observed “the Church exists by Mission
as a fire exists by burning”. The story of
Acts plots the early Church Community
as it grows and spreads through
conversion, persecution and dispersion.
That mission is ours. To the ends of the
earth with the good news of Christ.
We will catch something of that vision on
6 May and give to it on 20 May.

and
GIVING
Sundays
In some ways the Vision of Lansdowne
Church remains the same every year- to
make and mature disciples.
But in 2018 we have our eyes on the big
picture of the new building in Lansdowne
Central and what we need to be doing in
human resource terms, to get ready for its
completion.
A key part of that is Staff Development
especially the appointment of Mike
Smailes as an Associate.
In addition to the general work of a pastor,
Mike will focus his energy on aspects of
our Mission and Training.
We are looking to God to help us raise
£50k in additional general income a year.
This will cover a salary and a contribution
towards accommodation for the Smailes’
family. We want to see them settled by
September ready to begin the new term.
We have produced a form for this purpose.
You will find it on our website and at our
Welcome Points. We commit all this to
God as we pray through how we might
respond personally. Gift Sunday is on 20
May.

Sunday 13 May
Local mission in Bournemouth includes
witnessing in our workplaces, church
activities, schools, families, and
neighbourhoods, and this will no doubt
have ripple effects across the world, often
underestimated.
May 13th will be International Sunday
because it is an opportunity to celebrate
being an international church!
Dick Dowsett has worked for most of his
life with Overseas Missionary Fellowship
(OMF) International, first in the
Philippines and then internationally,
mobilising people for cross-cultural
ministry, pastoring missionaries and
sharing the good news of Jesus Christ
with East Asians. A frequent speaker
for university Christian Unions, both in
Britain and in many other countries. He
now has a special ministry among
international students, especially those
from China. To his surprise that ministry
has continued long into retirement and he
has enjoyed times of working with The
Michael Ots Evangelism Trust (MOET) and
Universities and Colleges Christian
Fellowship (UCCF). He is married to Rose,
and they have three adult children and five
grandchildren. Dick relaxes by listening to
opera, reading crime novels and cookery.
The international priority at Lansdowne
Church is one expression of mission
within global mission. As I lead the
Internationals’ Ministry, my responsibility
and passion is to motivate and equip us as
a church in this important Biblical
commission encompassing all people. My
job title is a proactive reminder to me that
we are an international church in an
international town.
Paul writes to the Romans describing his
passion to reach everybody, whether
Greek or non-Greek, wise or foolish,
wherever they live. So, as we meet
internationals of all ages and stages, we
don’t have a choice, but as Paul states we
are under obligation to share the good
news about Jesus.
On International Sunday let’s celebrate
that we are a church with different
nationalities, making us a diverse family.
Invite your friends and neighbours! This is
for everyone to be involved in. None of us
reading this are too insignificant to invite
someone to church, meet for a coffee or
share a meal together; often this can be
transformational.
It is a great privilege to have Dick Dowsett
sharing with us during this Sunday,
helping us to celebrate being international
and equipping us to continue to be part of
global mission. Dick will challenge us to
examine our mindsets on what is a truly
Kingdom-shaped 21st century church.

International Worker

This year our annual Woodbury Avenue
Fun Day will be a bit different. Working
in collaboration with Jewell Academy
Primary School, the Townsend
Community Association and YMCA
Bournemouth, we'll be running our
biggest event yet. Using the Jewell
Academy playing field and working in
partnership gives us the chance to engage
and support the community much more
than we could by using our building.
We will be running many of the same
kinds of events and stalls, with space for
a 'Find out more' stall and an Alpha stall,
but we'll be doing it alongside friends in
the community. If, like many in the
church, you haven't been “hands-on
involved” in the community, or spent
much time in the area, this is a perfect
opportunity.
There are loads of opportunities to get
involved. If you'd like to help in any way

Comings and Goings ...
DENNIS AND SHEILA EATON return to Malawi on 1
May, where they will be involved in Bible teaching
and pastoral care amongst people living in desperate
physical and spiritual poverty. In addition, in seeking
to evangelise and disciple people in remote areas
where many are illiterate, they will be making
available solar-powered audio players containing the
Bible and Scripture-based messages in the language
of the people. Please pray for much spiritual fruit.
On Friday 18 May ANTOINE will be returning home after two years’
service with Operation Mobilisation in the Far East. Look out for him
at the services on Sunday 20 May!
A date for your diary! On Thursday 31 May at 7.30 pm in the church,
a whole evening is being devoted to hearing from Antoine about these
last two years. This will include a visual presentation. Please come
and encourage Antoine and be encouraged yourself!
