DANCE AT MARYMOUNT
MANHATTAN COLLEGE
The Marymount Manhattan College
Department of Dance prides itself on providing
the best of both worlds—a strong dance
program, rigorous curriculum, and excellent
faculty combined with a well-rounded education
that comes from being part of a liberal arts
college. It is the department’s philosophy that
this combination offers the best preparation
for the dancer to perform on and off the stage.
We believe that becoming a dancer is not
just a matter of learning dance techniques or
interrelated subjects, but requires the kind of
personal growth that a liberal arts education
provides. Offering both a BFA and BA in Dance,
we strongly encourage study in interrelated
disciplines of Dance rich with creativity and
opportunity. The dance faculty is committed
to the belief that learning through the body is
a means for the acquisition, translation, and
creation of social, historical, and theoretical
knowledge. Our movement classes offer a
rigorous approach to the physical and verbal
command of dance vocabulary, requiring the
student to formulate aesthetic insights and
apply them in the contexts of individual works,
stylistic traditions, and historical and cultural
awareness. Students are able to pursue a minor
or a double major in other areas of the College’s
curriculum, providing them with additional skills
to use after graduating and expanding their
opportunities for personal growth. Our interest
is in the dancer as a whole person, an artist who
balances a trained body with an active, capable
mind and deeply engaged spirit. Senior year
students are assisted with resumes, photos,
and cover letters, to equip them for interviews
and/or auditions. We strive to instill discipline,
self-esteem, artistry, and creativity, components
that students need to realize their fullest
potential in any profession, but most especially
in dance.

The Marymount Manhattan College
Department of Dance offers the
opportunity to enjoy New York City’s
unparalleled cultural resources.
Dancers have performed at The Joyce
Theater, 92nd Street Y’s “Fridays
at Noon,” Everett Center for the
Performing Arts, The Hostos Center
for Performing Arts, Aaron Davis
Hall, Parsons Dance Gala, and at
public high schools in the New York
City area. Dance majors are often
given the opportunity to sign up for
free tickets to dance performances
around the city, and our course work
may require students to attend
multiple performances throughout
a semester with group rates.
Additionally, the Upper East Side
is home to Museum Mile, with the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, The
Frick, and The Guggenheim all
within walking distance of our
campus. By the spring semester
of senior year, students begin
to explore options for working,
auditioning, and interviewing in
the New York City area for job
placement in their area
of specialty.
