STRASBOURG Council MEETING CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6
attended 1 sudden death; investigated 1 incident of mischief, 1 abandoned vehicle, and 1 suspicious vehicle
report. Council also received a thank you card from the Nokomis Early Learning Centre for the tax abatement
motion passed at the March 16th meeting.
Under ‘old business’, council tabled an offer from a local resident to provide surplus trees to the town;
approved staff vacation time; approved placing a $40 ad in the Museum’s community calendar; approved
the modified building permit for the Ag Society’s planned 60’ X 40’ pole shed on the fair grounds, and
approved a potential additional $1,000 contribution from the Town for raising the height of the building to
16 feet from 12 feet (a recorded vote was taken, with 5 votes for and 1 against).
Under ‘new business’, council acknowledged receipt of 2 resumes for the summer student employment
position, and agreed to continue advertising; agreed to advertise again the Royal Canadian Legion magazine;
discussed briefly the possibility of bringing in speaker Doug Griffiths for a community event; set
Saturday, June 2nd as ‘free day’ at the transfer station when residents of Nokomis could take all types of
household furniture and appliances to the station at no charge; and passed a motion that treated town
water could not be provided for agricultural chemical application due to the potential for contamination of
the water supply at point of access.
Council spent considerable time discussing a matter that arose out of the Nokomis Ag Society’s recent
annual meeting, which was attended by Mayor David Mark. The Town received a complaint letter from the
Recreation Facility Board (delivered by Maureen Tait) alleging that the Mayor had threatened to restrict
the use of Rec Centre by the Ag Society if the Ag Society doesn’t revise their plans for the new pole shed to
suit the Town’s wishes. Mayor Mark read aloud a draft of a clarification / apology letter to be sent to the
Facility Board, and re-iterated that it was not his intention to interfere, or appear to threaten the Facility
Board or Ag Society, and he apologized if some interpreted his remarks that way. He noted that his only
intention is to foster greater transparency and cooperation between the Town and these volunteer groups,
and to assist them in building a renewed and expanded volunteer base for the benefit of all, especially at a
time when the Town is planning a series 110th anniversary investments in 2018. Following the discussion,
Council unanimously passed a motion to send a letter to the Facility Board expressing Council’s support
for the Board and the work that they do.
The next scheduled meeting for Nokomis Town Council is on May 16, 2018.
