Spring runoff on
Qu'Appelle River
Water Security Agency Workers adjusting flow at Craven Dam
- BY JENNIFER ARGUE, Local
Journalism Initiative Reporter
April 13th, 2023
On April 10th, Saskatchewan’s Water Security
Advisorty put out an advisory that
there was the potential for ice jamming
for several rivers in the province, including the
Qu’Appelle River, “..following recent rapid melting
and runoff. Ice jams increase the risk for potential
localized flooding as they disrupt normal flows and
can cause water to breach embankments.”
“While ice jams are not uncommon at this time
of year, higher than previously predicted water
flows have been recorded or are expected on Swift
Current creek, the Moose Jaw river, the Qu’Appelle
river and the Wood river and ice is still present on
these watercourses.”
The WSA said they would manage flows, “ however,
this will not reduce the risk of ice jamming.”
They warned the public to be aware there could
be possible flooding upstream due to ice jamming
and the exercise caution, “as ice jams can be highly
dynamic resulting in rapid changes in water levels
— under no circumstances should anyone venture
out onto an ice jam.”
“... this will not reduce the risk of ice jamming.”
This time of year, fluctuations in weather can give
a person thermo-whiplash. Last week this area was
snow-covered, with nighttime temperatures dipping
down to -25, followed by daytime temps over
+15 in less than a week. Today it’s a balmy +8, and
a mix of rain and snow is expected tomorrow.
Following the river, we drove along the valley floor,
starting East on Highway 6 and heading west along
Highway 99. In 2011, postdiluvian, the valley floor
looked like a giant lake. Today, you can see the river
and the different water levels as it winds across the
valley.
Disc Golf a success in Buena Vista
Players can play 365 days a year
- BY JENNIFER ARGUE, Local
Journalism Initiative Reporter
April 13, 2023
After what seems like the longest winter
ever, it’s finally a decent spring day in the
lakeside Village of Buena Vista. The snow
is finally receding on the community’s 9-basket
disc golf course. Not that it really matters when it
comes to the popular game of disc golf that can be
played year-round.
The website discsportshistory.com says, “According
to The Complete Book of Frisbee, disc golf’s
earliest recorded history was in Bladworth, Saskatchewan,
Canada in 1926. Ronald Gibson and a
group of his Bladworth Elementary School buddies
played a game of throwing tin lids into 4-foot wide
circles drawn into sandy patches on their school
grounds. They called the game Tin Lid Golf and
played fairly regularly. However, after they grew
older and went their separate ways, the game
ended.” Fast forwarding to 2023, according to the
udisc.com website, there are more than 14,000
courses worldwide. In 2022, 4.3 courses were
being installed daily.
“...well, why don’t we give this a try.”
Overheard at the coffee shop
Southey RCMP seeks
public assistance to locate
missing man
For his well-being, Southey RCMP is seeking
the public’s assistance to help locate 35-yearold
Joel Campbell of Standing Buffalo First
Nation.
-BY, Media Release April 11, 2023
Joel has not been in contact
with family since the evening
of Wednesday, April 5, when he
advised he was in the Southey
area. It is uncommon for him to
be out of contact with family for
so long.
Joel is described as being 5’
8” tall, 170 pounds, with dark
brown hair and brown eyes. It
is unknown what he was last
wearing.
Joel also has connections to Fort
Qu’Appelle, but it is unknown if
he is in the community.
Joel is wanted for being unlawfully
at large, but the purpose
of this news release is to locate
him and confirm his well-being,
particularly given he has not
been seen/spoken to for several
days. We ask the public not to
approach him and contact the
police if you see him or know of
his whereabouts.
Police have been in contact
with the individual who provided
Joel with a ride on April
5, 2023. He was last seen near
the intersection of Highway
#22 and Highway #6 on April 5
around 7:30 p.m., walking eastbound
on Highway #22. We now
know he was last seen wearing a
grey hooded sweater, toque and
sweatpants. Joel has not been
located and is still considered
missing.
Southey RCMP have received
new information via video surveillance
from a local business
which depicts a male, matching
the description of Joel Campbell,
who may have been seen
walking south on Highway 6
south of Southey, SK, toward
Regina, on April 5th, 2023.
At approximately 7:20 p.m., a
black Dodge Charger was seen
stopping next to the male, who
then appeared to enter the vehicle
before continuing to travel
south. They looking for any information
from the public who
may have seen this interaction
to report it to Southey RCMP by
calling 306-726-5230 or their
local police service.
Southey RCMP are also looking
to speak to the driver or the
occupants of the black Dodge
Charger for information on
Joel’s whereabouts.
If anyone has information on
the whereabouts of Joel, please
contact Southey RCMP at 306-
726-5230, 911 or 310-RCMP.
Funny things
Reading the other day that
the governor-general, our
regal representative to the
nation, flew to Germany on an
apparently official function.
-BY PETER FOSTER, Craven
April 13, 2023
Now I read yesterday that 24 Sussex Drive
is full of rats, insert liberal joke here, broken
pipes, leaky roofs, and in general is a health
hazard for anyone to consider living there.
Renovations to the crumbling old girl, insert
gender joke here, which involve stripping the
building down to the bare walls, replumbing
and rewiring the structure, come to somewhere
around 26 million dollars.
Now, could you possibly think of a better use
for 700 thousand dollars other than sipping
on 100$ glasses of orange juice and munching
on foie gras at 30 thousand feet? Well, if
you are unable to, I can! Now that is such an
obscene waste of money it is not even funny.
Reading here this morning, the Calgary
police have instituted a novel policy of clearly
marking traffic enforcement vehicles with
high visibility banners when they set up photo
radar locations.
Initial results have been interesting, to say the
least. A 68% decrease in traffic violations as a
result of the clearly visible enforcement vehicles.
However, now we have a situation where
municipalities are suffering a lack of funding
in their budgets because of the reduction of
convictions. Yet, in almost the same breath,
reassure the public that they were never used
as cash cows!
One wonders as to the accuracy of that statement.
Funny thing, I always thought that
the inception of photo radar was, first and
foremost, a safety issue never to be used as a
retroactively punishing revenue producer.
To that statement, I can only reply. You B.S.
your friends, and I will B.S. mine, but let us
not bother B.Sing each other!
In the last 15 years, more than 150,000 students across Canada have
grown a classroom garden and planted the seeds of food and farming
knowledge and understanding.
Little Green Thumbs, a program managed by Agriculture in the Classroom
and to harvest the learning opportunities it presents. Students actively
participate in planting and caring for their garden, growing a variety of
vegetables such as lettuce, beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Classroom
gardens become living laboratories, a tool for students to apply real-life
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) skills and bring learning
to life. An LGT garden becomes an extension of a traditional classroom,
naturally inspiring inquiry-based, cross-curricular, and experiential
learning.
“We know that our communities need informed and inspired leaders,”
said Brit MacDonald, LGT National Program Director. “We need to equip
the next generation with the skills, knowledge, and motivation to work
for the health of our food system, environment, and each other. A garden
is a great place to grow such leaders.”
The impact of a classroom garden on students extends beyond learning
how to grow food. There is a growing recognition in our country that
food and farming lie at the heart of some of our most pressing social and
environmental issues. More importantly, they lie at the heart of the solutions.
Because of this, food and farming present some of our most current
and engaging educational opportunities, and Little Green Thumbs is
a model example. Students truly get their hands dirty growing classroom
crops, harvesting food, skills, and knowledge, and then sharing that
experience with their school, family, and greater community.
Leanne Schappert, a Little Green Thumbs teacher who has been growing
a Little Green Thumbs garden for 15 years says, “Having a garden in the
classroom is the opportunity to have hands-on learning for my students.
Being a part of the garden, planting and taking care of it, and having a
vested interest really makes learning happen. I see they’re excited about
learning. They’re passionate about learning. They walk in the classroom
every day to see what's happening. I can’t imagine teaching without [the
garden].”
The Little Green Thumbs program began with four teachers in Saskatchewan
in 2007. Over 15 years it has expanded into Alberta, Newfoundland,
Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia,
Nunavut, and Quebec, and has over 1,100 teachers and 26,000 students
‘dig in’ each year across Canada. In Saskatchewan alone, 38,303 students
have participated in the program in a decade and a half.
Are You Doing Too Much for Your Teen?
There was a time when eighteen-year-olds left home to pursue post-secondary education or to work. They were
not considered adults because they were eighteen, but rather because they were living as adults.
-BY, Gwen Randall-Young
April 10, 2023
Things have changed and many young
people live at home well into their
twenties. There can be many reasons
for this, but one is that it is simply too
comfortable to leave.
It seems easy for parents to still feel a
need to do so much for their children as
they may not have noticed they are not
“children” anymore. That or the parents
are clinging too tightly to their young
adult children as they are not ready to
give up the parenting role.
I have worked with parents who still do
their teens laundry, do all the grocery
shopping and preparing meals, even
making the kid’s lunches. Often the
parents may pay for the child’s gas and
give spending money. Who would want
to leave?
This is not so much about getting
young adults out of the house, as it
is about helping them learn to do the
things adults do to care for themselves.
Learning to clean the house, empty
the garbage, deal with the recycling,
grocery shopping, preparing meals and,
of course, doing their own laundry. It
is also an important life experience to
have a part time job if still in school.
My son started doing his own laundry
when he was nine as his non “Suzy
homemaker” mom turned all of his underwear
pink! In our house the expectations
were according to age and ability.
From an early age they had chores, even
if it was simply putting toys away when
very young.
By age eleven they were each making
one meal a week, and it was understood
that once they had a driver’s license,
grocery shopping was on their list. This
included checking to see what was needed,
making a list, getting the groceries
and putting them away.
By the time they went off to university,
they were fully functional adults, and
when home, we all got groceries together
and they kept pointing out when I
was not making the most economical
choice. As students they became very
good at spending wisely.
Not allowing young adults to take these
responsibilities is enabling, even though
it often comes from a place of love and
wanting to make life easier for them. It
can even be handicapping, especially
when they are still at home in their late
twenties. At that age it can be very hard
to start being an adult, when they could
have had ten years of practice by then.
Twenties quickly turn into thirties!
If we wait too long to give them adult responsibilities,
there is a good chance we
will get pushback. Remember, a family
is a team, and everyone should contribute
to the wellbeing of the whole.
Pollination
In order to understand the complexities of growing fruit we need to understand a bit more about the
birds and the bees or more scientifically.
-BY, Patricia Hanbidge
April 16 th , 2023
It is sometimes hard to believe that there
is more to the beauty and scent of a flower
than our own personal enjoyment. However,
the primary purpose of a flower is to seduce
insects to pay a visit and in that process pollinate
the flower so it is possible to continue life
and allow the flower to produce seeds. Take the
apple tree as an example – if not for the bees
our efforts to grow these fruit would in fact be
“fruitless”.
This process of pollination that occurs with
the visit of a bee or other insect is the actual
transfer of pollen grains from the stamen (male
part of the flower) to the stigma (female part of
the flower). If this results in a successful fertilization,
then the wonder of life continues. The
previously undeveloped seeds that are present
in the ovary of the flower will start the development
into viable seeds. Again using apple trees
as an example, this development of viable seeds
also begins the development of the apple itself.
Some plants will also be pollinated by things
other than bees. For example, most of the trees
we commonly use for our urban forests rely on
the wind for that wondrous transfer of pollen.
Interestingly enough, these trees do not have
very showy flowers as the wind is not enticed by
beauty and scent like an insect would be.
Now that we have simplified the process of pollination
– let’s make it more realistic as Mother
Nature is of course in reality more complex.
Some flowers are what we call “perfect” and
contain both male and female parts. But, there
are flowers that contain only one sexual part so
are distinctly either male or female. Those containing
only pistils are considered female while
those containing only stamens are considered
male.
Some plants will have both male and female
flowers on the same plant. This is termed a
monoecious plant and a good example of this
would be the pumpkin. A plant that has only
male or female flowers is termed dioecious. At
this point you may be wondering why it matters
who is monoecious and who is dioecious – but
it actually is quite important. Take the poplar
tree as a great example of why this does indeed
Cherry Blossoms
matter. It is usually in June when the female
cottonwoods (a type of poplar) produce a veritable
blizzard of fluff (which actually contains
the seed) – a large problem when enjoying the
outdoor patio, especially if allergic! A simple
way to solve this problem is to grow only he
male clones which of course do not produce seed
and voila – no fluff.
Just to add one more complexity, some plants
require cross-pollination (like apples) while
others are able to be self-pollinated. In order for
an apple (blueberry, hazelnut and most plums)
to be produced they require the pollen of a
genetically different but closely related plant for
fertilization to occur. Hence, the directive you
have likely heard often says that you need two
different apple trees to get fruit!
The circle of life is complex regardless of the
species involved. I hope you have enjoyed this
brief foray into the wonders of renewal in the
life of a plant! Watch for the next articles on
more fruit you can grow successfully! Happy
gardening this summer…..and may you question
“why” just a little bit more often!
More housing was built in Canada
during the 1970s than now
Despite rising population and growing demand, more housing was constructed in Canadian cities
during the 1970s than what is presently being built, according to a new study released today by the
Fraser Institute.
-BY, Media Release, Fraser Institute
April 13, 2023
“The reality is simple: Canada is not building
enough homes to keep up with population
growth or basic demand,” said Steve Lafleur,
senior fellow with the Fraser Institute and
co-author of Canada’s Housing Mismatch: Canadians
want ground-oriented homes, but not
enough are being built.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,
many of Canada’s real estate markets have
experienced significant price increases.
The study finds that, Canada-wide home prices
were 28 per cent higher in February 2023 than
in March 2020, despite falling from record
high appreciation in early 2022.
Critically, “ground-oriented” single-family
homes and townhouse prices increased by 31
per cent, compared with a 17 per cent increase
among apartments over the same period.
Despite strong demand, ground-oriented housing
completions declined during the 2010s,
alongside a general national decline in housing
completions compared to the 1970s.
“Not only is there a widespread shortage of
housing, but there is a growing mismatch between
the housing types being built and those
preferred by Canadians,” said Josef Filipowicz,
senior fellow at the Fraser Institute and study
co-author.
“Clearly we should focus on the causes and
consequences of this mismatch, as well as solutions
for Canadians now and in the future.”
Records fall during Summer’s
great spring
In water-related parlance, let’s just say it’s unlikely that Toronto
swimmer Summer McIntosh is a splash in the pan.
The 16-year-old swimming sensation made
headlines around the world in late March by
setting two women’s world records within
the space of five days at the Canadian swimming
trials. It marked the first time a Canadian female
swimmer had been No. 1 in the world in two longcourse
events since Elaine Tanner (Mighty Mouse,
as you old-timers might recall) in 1967.
Swim watchers can hardly wait for the 2024 Olympic
Games in Paris, where the then-17-year-old
McIntosh will compete against U.S. swim
legend Katie Ledecky and Australia’s
Ariadne Titmus, the 2020 Olympic
From
the
Sidelines
BRUCE
PENTON
champion, in the 400-metre freestyle.
The 400 freestyle at the Canadian
swimming trials was McIntosh’s first
world record — 3:56.08. Titmus was
the previous record holder, at 3:56.40.
Five days later, the Canadian teen stunned
the swimming world by setting a world record in the
400-metre individual medley (butterfly, backstroke,
breaststroke, freestyle) with a time of 4:25.87. The
former record, held by Hungary’s Katinka Hosszú
(4:26.36) had been untouched for seven years.
While swimming is not a high-profile sport in
Canada, McIntosh was hardly an unknown name
in the world’s swimming community. She made a
big splash at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, finishing
fourth as a 14-year-old in the 400-metre freestyle.
She began collecting medals galore in 2022,
winning four at the world aquatics championship,
and then six medals at the 2022 Commonwealth
Games. But there were no world records until this
year in Toronto and evidently, one wasn’t enough for
McIntosh.
So what’s to come for the young swimming prodigy?
The Paris Olympics next year will offer a chance for
Summer’s fame to expand even more around the
world and Canadian media have until then to develop
a nickname for our country’s latest superstar,
like Tanner’s ‘Mighty Mouse’ moniker more than 50
years ago.
McIntosh, whose mother swam at the 1984 Olympics
in Los Angeles, still has a number of years of
top competitive swimming ahead of her. A website
called RealClearScience says female athletes in
speed swimming events don’t hit their peak until
age 22.
That gives McIntosh six years to possibly become
the most famous swimmer in the world. It’s safe
to say she’s already got a good headstart on that
mission.
DISC GOLF - CONTINUES FROM PAGE 1
“You are
The community of Buena Vista
has jumped on the disc golf
game. President of the Buena
Vista Parks and Rec Committee,
Donna Hall, said, “We had
this park, and no one would
ever go there because no one
ever knew it was there. A big
open space where nothing
happened. I knew disc golf
was becoming popular in the
province so I thought well,
why don’t we give this a try.”
In 2019 after researching the
viability and consultation
with people knowledgeable
about disc golf, the area was
designed in 2020 they got
going. “We said ok, let’s do it.”
They ordered the baskets, and
in 2021 the course took shape.
Community donations came in to help them put it
together. By the end of July, they had their grand
opening. “And it’s taken off ever since. It’s really
popular.” The game is free to play, and the Udisc
website offers an app that keeps score and lists all
of the disc courses in the world.
basically
going for
a walk
just like
on a golf
course.”
The game is played like golf and takes around
45 minutes. Frisbee-like discs are used instead
of golf balls. The discs are smaller than a child’s
frisbee. “You can get a long-range disc, you can get
a putter, you can get a short-range, you can get all
kinds of different variations of discs.” Discs can be
relatively inexpensive and purchased online and
in some sporting stores. Players “tee off” from a
cement pad to get their disc into the basket at the
end of each “hole.” The course is considered a par
three, so it should take approximately three tosses
of the disc to get to the basket. After each player
has gone, whoever is furthest from the basket goes
next, and so on, until every player’s disc has made
it into the basket. Whoever finishes the course
with the least amount of throws wins.
The game can be played with as little as one disc,
with some players utilizing various discs. “There
are people that come out here to play, and they
carry a backpack of discs. They have probably 20
to 30 discs in their bag,” said Hall. “It’s for all ages.
Little kids, four year olds can play it, 90 year olds
can play it. You are basically going for a walk just
like on a golf course.”
In 2022 Buena Vista hosted a family disc golf
tournament with fun variations on each hole, such
as throwing with the opposite hand and the closest
to the basket and furthest from it. They will hold
another tournament this summer on July 15th and
will be advertised on the Udisc app.
Hall encourages people to come out and have a
good time. “It’s a fun thing…It’s a family event,
that’s the main thing…and if it’s a really hot day
you just take a little short walk down to the beach.”
MINISTERIAL MESSAGES
A Call Back
When you start a job, you are trained and left alone.
What is the first thing you do? Usually, there are
options, so priorities must be set.
-BY REV. RICK SHOTT,
Nokomis Baptist Church
April 10, 2023
You can tell a lot about someone from
how they begin. Sometimes people get
so overwhelmed they do not know how
to begin. I think we can see this in the
disciples after the resurrection.
In the gospel of John 21, we see some
disciples go fishing. Not a pole and rod
affair, but using a boat and net, a commercial
setup. Peter was overwhelmed,
and he went back to his prior profession.
The past few days were so amazing.
He had seen Jesus tried, crucified
and buried. He then had met him alive
and well. It would be a bit too much for
many people. So he went fishing. Then
he meets Jesus again.
The patience of Jesus is beyond compare.
After working for years training
Peter, here he is, wandering from his
calling. Yet there was no shouting
match. No berating. No exasperation.
What we see is Jesus patiently showing
Peter there is a better way. Helping
Peter to stay true to his calling.
This is no less true for any of us. I write
this with Easter freshly gone by. As a
holiday, it becomes a reminder of Christ
for all people. Perhaps you have been
reminded of the need to be at church.
Do not overlook such feelings, they
are the call of God. In the fellowship
of church, we can grow more than on
our own. We will become better people
because we are with fellow believers.
The world wants us fishing. slipping
away from our call to follow Jesus. It is
a temptation for everyone.
It is together that we are at our best.
Even in individual sports, without
coaches and others to train with, we do
not reach our peak performance. So it
is in the faith. We need others to help us
and for us to help them. We are meant
for community, that is why Jesus had
12 disciples and why Christians form
churches.
I know that many people will say that
the church has flaws. This is true. Even
Jesus had a disciple betray him, but
that did not deter him or his disciples.
Truly, it is a reason to continue on in
the church. This is to help the church
carry on. To help her to cope, fix issues
and become better. Anyone church may
have significant issues such that you
may need to walk away, but there are
others. Many Christians are trying every
day to be faithful. Join them in that
daily struggle.
Let this Easter be a call to live for the
Lord like no other. As you have received
grace by the cross, graciously join
together. Be part of a church and let
the grace of God flow even more freely
through you today.
Everything gets a
shot at being cool
Chrysler seemingly owned the minivan market forever.
The Magic Wagon started it, quickly becoming known as the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager.
I
even
remember seeing some basic utility
models with the big RAM badges that
the pickups had. Ford had the big, clunky
Aerostar, and GM had the boxy Astro and Safari
vans based on the Chevy S10 pickup platform,
but no one else had a minivan as early as
Chrysler.
In 1990, GM decided to step into
the ring with a trifecta of minivans
so wild and futuristic
Camshaft
Corner that they, unfortunately, didn’t
KELLY KIRK
catch on. The Pontiac Trans
Sport, Oldsmobile Silhouette,
and Chevy Lumina APV were
three of the oddest minivans that
ever debuted. Chrysler did what they
always did back in the day; they drew a vehicle
with a ruler, marked out some corners, and sold
a bunch of them. The Caravan and Voyager were
both as boxy as the Ram, and they had decent
seating for seven, which is all they needed to do.
All GM had to do was take the lines of the Chevette
and expand it into a van, but instead, they
went full Jetson. To their credit, the Trans Sport
looked almost exactly like the concept that came
before it, aside from the gullwing rear doors
and on-board Nintendo NES, of course. The
unfortunate part of a production vehicle looking
like a concept is that the concept usually favours
form over function. The windshield of the Trans
Sport, for example, cost a small fortune to replace
and was apparently a nightmare with dash
glare in certain driving conditions.
Over the course of seven model years, the Trans
Sport was available with a great variety of V6
engines to choose from. Honestly, there wasn’t
I never liked these vans when they were new. The huge windshield with the big corner windows and the flat hood was just too
much of one line. This one looks great on C4 Corvette saw blade wheels with a hard lowered stance. The photo has randomly
been shared online, origin unknown.
much of anything wrong with the 3.1, 3.4, or 3.8
V6, all three of which were widely used in many
GM cars, the same platform of cars that these
vans were based on. I haven’t seen a Trans Sport
in years, but any that I’ve ever seen have been
white, which I think helped to earn them the
nickname “Pontiac Dustbuster.” The long snout
mixed with the white paint job, you can’t un-see
it. I recall seeing a red Oldsmobile Silhouette
years ago, but I have never seen a Lumina APV
in real life. After 1996, GM took all the creativity
out of their vans, and actually sold quite a few
units.
Seeing this surviving Trans Sport on saw blade
mags makes me glad that they did exist briefly,
and it proves that with the right wheels and
stance, anything can be at least a little bit cool.
By the 1980s, canola had
replaced rapeseed in Canadian
oilseed production, and today the
acres produced are massive, and
the crop’s value forms the foundation
of most farm incomes.
While there certainly are few indications
that will change anytime
soon, one has to wonder what may
one day unseat canola as the major
Prairie crop? The answer might not
be a single crop as much as a rather
diverse basket of crops, all of which
fall under the umbrella of being
pulse crops. Lentils, peas, and various
beans are not something new
for the Prairies. My Dad used to
CONTINUES FROM PAGE 1
In the east, the water appears lower, becoming noticeably
higher the further west you travel. Under
the old Highway 6 bridge, water flows around and
over what looks like an iceberg mass beneath. The
ice is in various degrees of erosion.
When I get to the Craven Dam, I luck out, and
Water Security Agency staff are out making adjustments
to the flow by raising the dam's gates slowly.
When extreme flooding occurred in 2011, these
gates were wide open. One of the people out today
is Water Security Manager of Operations & Maintenance,
Brad McClinton.
The sound of the rushing water, as it passes
through the gates, is surprisingly loud. It’s a sound
one doesn’t normally equate to southern Saskatchewan
life. If you close your eyes, you can almost
imagine being at a waterfall on Vancouver Island.
Instead, it’s run-of-the-mill springtime along the
Qu’Appelle River at the Craven Dam. Beautiful in
its own right. The dam regulates water flow along
the river as it heads west towards the next dam at
Echo Lake.
McClinton said that it came in fast overnight, and
they were there to open the gate “to naturalize the
flow,” The flow rate was normal for the temperature
changes that occurred. Sask Water Security Agency
has a forecasting group monitoring the runoff and
balancing the flows through the Qu’Appelle system.
There will likely be several peaks. McClinton said
the water was quite low the day before. “We saw
this morning that it had come up substantially.
So we got out here to open it up to let it naturally
work.” They regularly return to the dam to gradually
open the gates at an even pace so the flow erodes
the ice instead of shattering it. He said it’s better
when the ice breaks up into smaller pieces. McClinton
tells me, “So it’s weakened deteriorated ice, so
when it does break up, its smaller pieces. It basically
breaks itself up as it touches another piece of ice,
going smaller and smaller.”
“We try to do everything we need to to make sure
the flows are where we need them.”
It will take a while for the water to migrate downstream
to the next dam in the chain at Echo. The
flow forecasters will monitor it for the right time
when they can set the water at the recreational
levels we all enjoy without causing flooding.
We contacted Sask Water to see if there has been
any new information and will update this story if
more information becomes available.
