briefed about ICAST collections and
The Information Management
Division (IMD) (�ig. 11) is NAL’s
‘information arm’. The Division’s
responsibilities include:
● Editing, digital design and
publication
● Creating and archiving
multimedia content
● Software for R&D management
● Design and development of
information portals.
In 2002-03, NAL’s Photography Unit
was merged with IMD. This merger is
well conceived; still and video
photography services integrate
seamlessly with IMD’s defined
functions.

DESIGN AND
PUBLICATION
This activity involves content creation
for the print media. Some of the
content creation effort relates to
established NAL publications, e.g.
services as a part of its awareness
programme. These specialized
network services were well
appreciated.
the Annual Report, the house
magazine Hansa Vani, and the twin
weekly publications: Weekly Calendar
of Events and Information Pasteboard.
Others are specific publications: to
applaud an outstanding scientist or
pilot, or to present a ‘corporate
overview’ of NAL’s R&D missions and
goals.
NAL’s Annual Report 2001-2002 was
a 225-page compilation with over
300 illustrations. This is actually quite
a remarkable publication, but it
seldom receives the acclaim that it
deserves. As always, the publication
was released at NAL’s �oundation
Day function. The system to produce
annual reports has now been perfected;
producing the report is now less
tortuous than what it used to be.
The special publications in 2002-
2003 included a tribute to Dr R A
Mashelkar (who turned 60) (�ig. 12)
and to Wg Cdr P Ashoka (who called
it a day after flying for half a century).
A new NAL corporate brochure and
attractive leaflets on the HANSA and
SARAS aircraft were also produced
for release at Aero India 2003.
AVIA, a new monthly newsletter of the
Aeronautical Society of India, was
launched in November 2002 with an
interview feature with President A P J
Abdul Kalam (�ig. 13). �ive issues of
AVIA have appeared so far.
A new activity – poster design and
presentation – was attempted for the
first time. The first exercise was to
participate in a CSIR creative team to
