all the records pertaining to the cost,<br />

CENTRAL MANU�ACTURING<br />
�ACILITIES<br />
The central manufacturing facilities<br />
are fully equipped with various<br />
conventional <strong>and</strong> CNC machinery<br />
<strong>and</strong> engaged in the production of<br />
aircraft components, jigs, fixtures etc.<br />
All the components are being<br />
manufactured under strict vigilance<br />
<strong>and</strong> supervision to attain high quality<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ards. The main partners in this<br />
activity are the precision instrument<br />
shop, sheet metal <strong>and</strong> welding shop<br />
<strong>and</strong> a few other divisional workshops<br />
viz, Structures <strong>and</strong> Materials Division<br />

METROLOGY LABORATORY<br />
A well-established metrology<br />
laboratory has been set up having a<br />
variety of precision equipment such<br />
as height masters, surface tester,<br />
roundness measuring instrument,<br />
high precision theodolytes <strong>and</strong> the<br />
latest computerised co-ordinate<br />
measuring machine’. This Lab is<br />
mainly responsible for calibration of<br />
inspection equipment <strong>and</strong> quality<br />
control of all components <strong>and</strong> assemblies<br />
pertaining to the major aircraft<br />
manufacturing programme of NAL.<br />
METAL �INISHING & PAINTING<br />
The electroplating <strong>and</strong> painting shop<br />
carries out metal finishing <strong>and</strong><br />
painting of SARAS/HANSA/Tejas<br />
aircraft components as per st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />
of DGCA <strong>and</strong> ISO. �acilities such as<br />
yellow passivation, dichromate<br />
passivation, chromium plating, colour<br />
anodizing, blackening, nickel-plating,<br />
tin plating, copper plating <strong>and</strong><br />
painting are available in the section.<br />
APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING<br />
PROGRAMME<br />
As part of NAL's human resource<br />
development programme, the<br />
Engineering Services Division trains<br />
The following are the major on-going<br />
Laboratory projects <strong>support</strong>ed by the<br />
Estates <strong>and</strong> Building Unit (EBU).<br />
SCIENTIST APARTMENTS<br />
The construction of 12 three-bed room<br />
apartments <strong>and</strong> 48 two-bed room<br />
apartments is in progress at Kodihalli<br />
campus. 32 apartments are in an<br />
advanced stage of construction <strong>and</strong><br />
likely to be ready by December 2003,<br />
the remaining 18 apartments are<br />
expected to be completed <strong>and</strong> fit for<br />
occupation by March 2004.<br />
around 35 apprentice trainees in<br />
various technical trades. As per the<br />
norms of the Govt. of India, training<br />
is being offered both in theory <strong>and</strong><br />
practice so that they can appear for<br />
the All-India apprenticeship<br />
examination every year.<br />
PHYSICAL PLANT MAINTENANCE<br />
AND TRANSPORT CELL<br />
This section is responsible for the<br />
maintenance <strong>and</strong> upkeep of the fleet<br />
of NAL transport vehicles <strong>and</strong> also<br />
material h<strong>and</strong>ling equipment in the<br />
Laboratory. The section is also<br />
responsible for running the fleet of<br />
vehicles as per the schedule to pick<br />
up <strong>and</strong> drop staff members.<br />
This section also maintains all the<br />
records pertaining to all vehicles<br />
<strong>and</strong> attends to RTO <strong>and</strong> insurance<br />
affairs.<br />
�IRE PREVENTION CELL<br />
The fire prevention cell is engaged in<br />
updating all the fire fighting<br />
equipment in the Laboratory both at<br />
Kodihalli <strong>and</strong> NWTC Belur campuses.<br />
The team imparts training to staff<br />
members of NAL so that they can<br />
attend to fire prevention in case of<br />
emergencies.<br />
CONSTRUCTION O� TEST BAY �OR<br />
PROPULSION DIVISION<br />
As part of the collaborative<br />
programme with VSSC, <strong>and</strong> to carry<br />
out R&D studies on high-speed<br />
combustion, a dedicated facility has<br />
to be established at NAL, NWTC<br />
Belur campus with the existing central<br />
air facility. The building will house<br />
the test bay in the control room. The<br />
estimated cost of this work is around<br />
Rs.55 lakhs. It is in an advan-ced<br />
stage of completion <strong>and</strong> expected to<br />
be completed by June 2003.<br />
