Contents are thus either received through e-mail from publishers or downloaded from their website or scanned locally before being made available on the web. (www.icast.org.in/contents/conents. html) UNION CATALOGUE O� PERIODICALS IN CSIR/AEROSPACE LIBRARIES ICAST took the initiative to compile and load the list of periodicals being subscribed by nearly 40 CSIR labs and 20 Bangalore-based aerospace organisations like ISRO, ADA, GTRE, CEMILAC etc from the year 2001 onwards (�ig. 9). One can search by keywords from title, or can browse by organisation or titles listed alphabetically. The contact address of the concerned heads of the information centres has also been furnished to facilitate inter library loans. During the reporting period a few more aerospace library lists have been added. (www.icast.org.in/union/ unioncatalog.html) NEWS CLIPPING SERVICE News items covering aerospace, aeronautics and related areas, S & T general, CSIR Labs, matters concerned to Central Govt employees etc. are being made available through ICAST’s Intranet. Apart from covering leading dailies other popular journals like Current Science, Science, Nature, Jane’s Defence Review, Indian Aviation, Air International, Aeromodeller, Air Pictorial, etc are also being scanned. News items are uploaded everyday by noon. A powerful search engine ‘Swish-e’ with helpful tips has been put up to search the news by any word or name in the text. (www.icast. org.in/newsclip.htm) CURRENT AWARENESS SERVICE The combined aerospace reports and books addition (CARA and CABA) covering the latest acquisitions in the area of aeronautics, aerospace and related subjects from about 25 organisations (IISc, ADE, ADA, GTRE, ISRO HQ, SHAR, etc.) are now accessible through the ICAST web site (�ig. 10). Records are arranged by subject categories. The printed publications are also being mailed to nearly 50 organisations in the country. In a similar manner, the recent arrival of journal issues have also been put up on the site. 18.5� PRINTING AND PUBLICATIONS PRINTING SERVICES The Printing and Publications Section exclusively serves in-house requirements covering offset printing, screen printing, letter press printing and binding. The Section prints publications like proceedings of conferences and seminars, brochures, folders of major conferences and seminars organized at NAL almost on a “turnkey basis”. This year the Section carried out a record number of tasks: of the 1365 work requests received, 75 were major in nature required offset printing while 1070 were minor in nature with screen printing, binding. 220 petty works jobs such as letter press printing, etc. were also executed (see Table 4). Letter press ● 220 work requests were completed including cover pages for project documents (PD), project proposals (PP), special publications (SP), MC agenda, RC agenda etc. BINDING AND OTHER WORKS The section did binding work like ledgers, registers and scientific/ technical reports of the NAL. This year the Section acquired a new “rotary disc perforator creaser and slitter machine power driven 24 inches”, enabling perforation of canteen coupons, scribbling pads for conferences / seminars and meetings. 18.5G OTHER SERVICES TRANSLATION SERVICE During the reporting period three articles from German and one article from Russian were translated into English. CIRCULATION O� DOCUMENTS All NAL staff members above the Gr. III(1) level can borrow a maximum of 15 documents of any kind at a time, while the others can borrow documents depending upon the group and category they belong to. During the reporting period, more than 70,000 counter transactions (issues and renewals only) took place. Table 5 provides the membership details of ICAST. Since March 2003, ICAST switched over to the more sophisticated method of transactions 164 Management and Support Divisions involving scanning the individual ID with that of the documents, thereby discarding the borrower’s cards. INTER LIBRARY LOAN (ILL) ICAST extends the inter library lending facility to many organizations including ISRO, DRDO, IISc, CSIR and others. ICAST also procures articles/ documents of interest to its patrons. The fax or e-mail attachment facility is used to transmit articles. REPROGRAPHIC SERVICES ICAST continued to provide uninterrupted and quick photocopying services apart from maintaining the quality through the facility set up by Modi Xerox-Document Company. Table 6 gives statistics of jobs done at ICAST this year. 18.5H OTHER ACTIVITIES CORPORATE MEMBERS Many well known national and multi national companies including GE, Infosys, Snecma, Wipro, TCS have enrolled themselves as corporate members of ICAST and use our services extensively. ARCHIVAL LIBRARY The aerospace archive, housed at ICAST, has in its collection some important documents connected with the activities of NAL from its inception. The broad areas include papers/ publications connected with various activities of NAL including collaborative projects, training facilities, AR&DB project proposals, NAL’s participation on advisory committees, scientific and technical papers connected with aerodynamics, propulsion, fatigue and fracture, computers, meteorological studies, etc. of NAL. The documents are kept in closed access.
