EDITORIAL
One step at a time
Technology advances work best when
consumer demand meets fit for purpose
Over the last few months we have touched on the subject of
artificial intelligence suggesting that manufacturers and
suppliers need to get on board with AI to avoid being left
behind. In the April edition we took this further when we spoke to
Anthony King of Square One who predicted that the rise of AI
could spell the end for certain methods of fire and intruder
detection/management. Never ones to let a prediction go by
unchallenged this month we put the topic to our panel of experts
(see later in this edition) and it has given us a range of opinions.
The most striking thing to come out of the Panel feature is the
timeline estimates for the development of AI driven technology,
specifically the type of innovations that could lead to surveillance
cameras being fitted with AI functionality (and analytics) taking
over from other more established forms of detection. As we
learned from the Milestone event in Barcelona earlier in the year,
perhaps it is not the best thing to do to wait for the technology to
arrive – rather be at the forefront of the development and drive it
yourself. All being said and done though, it is likely that it will be
some time before we see true AI video cameras that learn from
what they see and then go on to make decisions for the owner.
What some people are quite rightly worried about (and this
list of people included Stephen Hawking) is the amount of power
that we designate to the technology to make decisions on our
behalf. This is the 2001 Hal scenario where the computer says
“no” and makes a decision that does not suit the owner’s wishes
or actually denies them the ability to overrule the decision. Now
this type of situation is probably science fiction and hopefully we
will never see such an event occur (we could always use Asimov’s
Three Laws of Robotics as a safeguard). But it is at least another
consideration for AI early adopters.
It’s highly unlikely that the level of AI that the security
industry would adopt would remove all people. Taking some
humans out of the process in terms of guarding is one thing, but
handing over decision making to a computer is something that
will surely require a lot of safety and security standards.
Access control however is definitely an area that could benefit
from AI and probably will be the first main area for the
technology to thrive. It seems only a logical step that we would
use AI and video to recognise a person and then grant/deny
access as required. Voice messaging can be triggered to
announce arrival or an alarm can be raised to warn of an
uninvited guest. That scenario works.
You can see why people are getting very excited about the
security technology of the future when AI is involved, but let’s
keep the paranoia about the rise of the machines to a minimum
for now and not be developing new systems just for the sake of it,
(I’m thinking footballing robots here). As we’ve seen with
driverless cars recently, it only takes one accident to dent public
opinion so much that product withdrawal is required. When lives
are at stake, it’s best to rely on what works best rather than what
wins science awards.
Security training centre in North
East England opens its doors
North East security firms and their apprentices
are set to receive a boost as a much-needed
security training facility has opened its doors
in Gateshead.
The workshop, based at Access Training on
the Team Valley, was designed and kitted-out
in partnership with a number of regional
security firms. The facility is aimed at ensuring
young people get the opportunity to learn
security systems hands-on and is hoped to
help to provide more high-quality security
apprentices to firms across the region.
At the workshop, apprentices will learn the
skills to design, install, commission and
maintain electronic systems inside and outside
premises to protect people and properties
from risk and danger. This includes CCTV,
intruder alarms, fire alarms and access control
systems.
The facility was officially opened by former
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lord John
Stevens of Kirkwhelpington who is also Chair
of Gateshead based security firm, The
Protector Group.
Managing director of Access Training,
Malcolm Armstrong said: “We have seen a
steady rise in the demand for security
apprentices over the last few years and it
became clear that having a practical workshop
would be advantageous to the companies we
work with. This new provision is going to
improve the quality of the training we can offer
the security industry. The technology involved
in security systems advances at a pace and
being able to provide practical training of
these systems on site is essential.
“We would like to thank all the companies
who generously donated equipment for the
centre.”
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks
talks to Paul Connelly,
Managing Director of CSS.
Based in Scotland, CSS are
one of the largest NSI approved and
most progressive security companies in
the region, operating with four branches in Scotland.
What have been the main factors for your success since
launching CSS 32 years ago?
Our business approach has never been to sell on price alone. Our
commitment to customers has always been a long game where we
provide great service and they simply don’t leave us. Endeavouring to
provide great service has been the number one factor in our success.
People buy from people they trust. Our customers prefer to buy our
services over our competition, having been fully briefed on the risks to
their business, not ours. We inform, advise and explain the risks. We
don’t simply tick boxes during the installation. We ensure that the
system is fit for purpose. If it isn’t installed to the specification of the
insurance company, this can leave a customer in real trouble.
Over the next five-year business plan, our continued focus is to show
commitment to our customers (old and new) to ensure their
experience with us is a positive one. All of this is thanks to the great
team we have built around our family business over the last 32
years. From our engineers, surveyors, admin staff and throughout
the business we have people who have bought into the ‘CSS way’.
In terms of new and high-level technologies. What examples
can you give us that your workforce is now able to offer your
customers?
We only fit Grade 4 signalling for all our new installs and one of
the benefits of this is that we can also provide remote support to
our customers to provide a quicker response. This high-level
product is an example of our decision never to compromise on
quality and ensure that installations exceed their requirements. We
are seeing an increasing demand for end-user Apps, however it is
vital that we also provide professional ARC monitoring for these
systems to keep our customers and their properties safe. I know
there is a stampede for apps and self-monitored systems, but
having an ARC on hand 24/7 to “be there just in case” brings our
business huge benefits. This service also provides a sense of
contentment to our customers knowing they can always actually
speak to a person at any time, should they need us.
You mention that CSS will not compromise on the Grade of
an installation. Do you feel that Insurance companies are
taking more of a back seat when specifying Intruder Alarms?
There isn’t any doubt in my mind, the eyes of Insurers are on
bigger risk factors such as flooding and fire. Burglary claims are
not as high in value, so perhaps these days their resources are
Promoted as part of the “Vigilance” range,
this is a Full HD Panoramic PoE camera; the
unit is based around a 1/3.2” 3MP sensor
with a 1.1mm F2.0 fisheye lens. It is ONVIF
compliant with a stated resolution of up to 1920 x
1536 pixels for video and snapshots. Compression
is H.264 or Motion JPEG. Motion detection
activated recording to Micro SD card of up to
128GB capacity is supported.
Getting started
The camera is PoE capable or can alternatively be
powered from a 12v 1.5A supply, maximum power
is stated as 4.6W.
DHCP is enabled by default so the camera will
take an allocated IP address or use its factory
default of 192.168.0.20.
The Quick Installation Guide advises you to run
the software on the supplied disc. This begins a
‘wizard’ that steers you through the initial setup
process but oddly does not force you to enter a
device password. Once the initial settings are
established then you are advised to communicate
with the camera via the web browser which gives
access to the full menu options. At this stage a
password is required to be set.
While the camera is rather small at just 97mm
diameter x 49mm height there is a large
cylindrical block measuring 77mm x 27mm
diameter around the connection leads that
appears to contain the active PoE components
along with a recessed reset button. This clearly
requires a large access hole for the cables and
block to be fed through.
Operation
The supplied D-View DCS-100 software allows
selection of up to 32 network cameras with
multiple screen layouts and control of the
camera’s electronic PTZ functions but did not
appear to allow selection of individual views and
only showed the screen view selected by the
browser. The DCS-100 User Manual doesn’t refer
to this form of camera so there is no mention of
image de-warping or relevant view selection.
The browser options are given as IE, Firefox
and Safari but varying results were obtained with
different browser and operating system
combinations so it may be that the camera hasn’t
been fully tested with a range of such options on
‘clean’ PCs. As long as used with a single system
this should not present a problem to the user.
When tested with a third-party NVR using
ONVIF connectivity the results were quite
acceptable with good overall image quality but
the maximum resolution of the sensor meant that
when electronically zoomed-in the images
became increasingly pixelated. However, to
provide simple quad or nine-way views of a room
the results were very useable.
Preset views are easy to set up and can be
called or sequenced, although speed options from
1 to 5 were given, no noticeable change in
sequence time was observed when running.
The camera runs rather warm with a base
temperature measured at 48.5°C during day-time
operation and up to 57.6°C with the LEDs on. The
specification states an ambient operating
temperature range of 0 to 40°C.
A bright green LED flashes to indicate network
connection status but this can be turned off
within the camera’s Maintenance settings.
The bi-directional audio worked well but the
internal speaker is very small (20mm) so output
volume is quite limited. There is no external audio
input or output capability.
When recording to the on-board Micro SD card,
motion event files are stored as .mp4 files with a
jpg of the initial image. These files can be played
back on most video players such as Windows
Media Player, VLC and DivX.
Configuration menu options
The browser view presents a straightforward D-
Link camera configuration page arranged with
function tabs beneath the top banner line and a
control section to the left-hand side of the
window. These tabs access Live Video, Setup,
Advanced, Maintenance, Status and Help menus.
The Setup tab gives the following Menu
options:
Setup Wizard – for Internet connection and
basic motion detection setup.
Network Setup – DHCP/IP addressing, UPnP,
Port settings, QoS and Multicast settings.
Dynamic DNS – DDNS service allocation.
Image Setup – Mirror, Flip, Anti-Flicker,
exposure, shutter, noise reduction, WDR and
image settings.
Audio & Video – Codec settings, Quality,
Bitrate and Audio controls.
Preset – Preset view selection and naming
plus e-PTZ speed and sequences.
Motion Detection – Enabling, Area setting and
Sensitivity.
Sound Detection – Enabling and detection
level.
Time & Date – Time Zone, Daylight Saving and
NTP settings.
Event Setup – Server settings for FTP, E-Mail
and Network or SD card storage.
SD Card – Card Formatting, allocation of files
per page and Delete files or folders.
Logout – logout of the connection.
There was no mention of Sound Detection
recording activation in the camera’s user manual
so this function may be a recent addition, but this
feature’s operation was quite straightforward with
a real-time indication of sound level allowing easy
threshold adjustment.
It seems likely that it is necessary to ensure
you calculate the storage requirement to suit the
SD card or network storage capacity as page 40 of
the manual refers to the overwriting of files
stopping, “if insufficient space allocated”. No
examples or expansion of the subject was given.
For the remaining menu tabs, the Advanced tab
has a range of options to enhance the previous
features including ICR (IR Filter) & IR illuminator
control for the management of the Day / Night
changeover and infrared LEDs. HTTPS and
associated certificate management, Access Lists
to enable a range of addresses to be allowed or
denied device access, then SNMP settings and
Logout. The Maintenance tab provides device
admin control such as User accounts, OSD and
network indicator LED control. System options
manage configuration up/download, Reboot
scheduling, Firmware information and upgrades.
The Status tab simply provides system status
information and access to the log files.
Finally, the Help tab gives a list of Hyperlinks
to help pages for each of the camera functions.
These open in a new Windows tab and are
reasonably comprehensive.
In addition to the help files the camera option
tab pages include “Helpful Hints” notes in the
right-hand column to provide guidance on the
relevant features.
Performance
The camera gives good image quality but as the
overall image is based on a sensor of 3MP the
overall circular image is potentially around 1.8MP,
so any zoomed pre-set views will likely be limited
to much less than VGA resolution, but for many
home and small office applications this may be
perfectly adequate to observe and detect scene
activity. The image de-warping is very good using
the browser. This camera will not achieve the
image performance of cameras utilising 9 or 12MP
sensors but is targeted at a much lower price
point.
Two high-intensity infrared LEDs are mounted
in the lens surround and provide good
illumination up to the stated 8 metres. The
Day/Night switch-over point can be set to 10, 20
or 30 Lux or scheduled if required. LED intensity is
adjustable to suit smaller areas via the set-up
menu.
Conclusion
A very cost-effective means to achieve wide area
views with single camera coverage. The Wizards
are supplied for a very basic level of setup but the
manual settings provide a good level of flexibility.
It is likely that this camera will find more of an
uptake with home users and small office
installations using the iOS and Android viewing
applications rather than mainstream security
installations.
Master Lock – Select Access
Plastic tray
Key hoook
Instructions
Mounting template
9.0 out of 10
There are a multitude of ways to grant
someone access to a building with a
sophisticated access control system
but for the majority of homes and a large
number of businesses it is still a key that is
required. In many situations, such as for
the care of elderly or for allowing workmen
onsite, it is vital that ‘leaving the key out’
is not putting the premises, people and
contents at risk. Placing a key under the
plant pot or front mat is not a secure
option.
While plastic boxes and containers
disguised as rocks are available these, of
course, are hardly the most robust and
only delay burglary.
A recent release from Master Lock is the
5426EURD a wall-mounted key lock box
under the name Select Access that offers
what the organisation claims is the widest
internal capacity available.
The zinc-heavy construction is spacious
enough to house a number of single keys
or multiple key bunches, plus access cards
and fobs. The 14-choice keypad is both
numerical and alphabetical, meaning that
16,000 combinations are possible to set.
Once the correct code has been entered
users move an ergonomically-shaped
handle to access the storage chamber.
The simple and secure lock box is aimed at
ensuring parents and children alike will never
have to hide keys under the doormat or a flower
pot ever again.
The product has received police accreditation
and been awarded both the ‘Sold Secure’ and
‘Secured by Design’ certifications, meaning it has
passed stringent testing procedures.
Installation
The unit is supplied fitted to display packaging
that is opened by cutting then tearing off the rear
information sticker. The fitting screws, internal
key hook, recode tool and plastic tray insert are in
a panel in the back of the pack. The unit is freed
from the package by snipping two retainers. It is
at this point that you notice that the packaging
itself was not contributing much to the product,
it’s all the key safe, weighing in at around 2.8kg.
Fortunately, the unit is supplied with a
template for marking out the drill holes, which if
not provided could have turned installation into a
two-man job as some could find it tricky to hold
the heavy unit against the wall and mark the
holes at the same time. As is the way with
Secured by Design systems they must be fitted as
instructed to ensure certification.
First job is to set the code. This can be done
when in situ but it is easier to set when it can be
manipulated on a desk. The designated code
allows any combination of at least four numbers
or characters to be used, but each can only be
used once. The process is straighforward and
involves rotating screws inside the door to “Set
On” position. The unit is then ready for fitting.
The unit should be mounted in a discreet place
and not where the screws will be drilled into
mortar. Using the template, mark out the
mounting points and then drill a 3mm pilot hole
followed by a 5mm drill for the full hole. All four
screws can then be hand tightened before using
an 8mm socket to tighten the two bottom screws.
With a 3mm gap for the top screws the key hook
should be inserted, then fully tighten the top
screws. The plastic tray and code tool can then be
returned to the unit.
Performance
The weatherproof cover is snug enough to protect
the unit but not too tight to hamper opening. Any
combination of the right buttons can be
depressed to open the safe – there is no set order.
So for example you could press 1245A or A4512 to
open the unit. The buttons require little pressure
and the locking mechanism is smooth.
The internal capacity of the unit is big enough
for a couple of keys including keyrings when
necessary. We gave the access code to people of a
range of ages and all found the system simple to
operate with no problems.
We tried to gain access to the unit using a drill
and then a 7lb sledge hammer to no avail other
than breaking off the weatherproof cover
(replacements available).
Conclusion
With an aging population and the subsequent
need for home visits, plus the rise of short-term
property rental companies such as Airbnb this
unit certainly meets the modern demands for
secured key management.
What sets this product apart from the
alternatives is the combination of large capacity
and independent security accreditations that
make this a unit that should be top of the list
when considering outdoor key safe storage
solutions.
Thermal security camera with
built-in analytics
The F-Series ID from Flir is a high-resolution
thermal security camera with onboard
analytics and a 640x480 thermal
sensor with up to 300 percent
greater thermal sensitivity
than previous F-Series
models.
The F-Series ID detects
potential intruders in both low
or zero light conditions, and its
built-in analytics classify human
and vehicular targets that pose a
risk. At the same time, the F-Series ID
ignores innocuous targets, such as
wandering animals or swaying tree limbs, that
might otherwise trigger nuisance alarms.
With five lens options, ¬including 44, 25, 17, 12
and 8.6-degree field of views, the F-Series ID
provides wide-to-narrow coverage that reduces the
number of cameras needed to monitor fence lines,
perimeters, and open areas.
Panel brings smart
security to everyday
applications
Eaton has announced the launch
of the i-on Compact, a starter-level
security panel that brings cloud
capabilities to residential
properties. The wireless intruder
panel with built-in keypad offers
up to 20 radio zones and can be
programmed, managed and
serviced remotely by installers via
Eaton SecureConnect. The new
system also incorporates a mobile
app that property owners can use
to control and monitor their
security infrastructure remotely.
Installers can fit the panel into
the property and connect it to the
local internet router with a cable or
Wi-Fi adapter and commission the
system without any complex IP set
up. With the use of radio-based
devices the absence of cabling
makes the process a quick one
and rather than programming
locally the system can be
programmed from anywhere by
the registered installer, which
reduces the amount of time that
needs to be spent on site.
Installers can log into Eaton SecureConnect
from either an office-based PC or a laptop, tablet or
smartphone out on the road. The installer can
access multiple installations in multiple locations
from the same portal using drop-down menus to
select the required site and functionality. Contact
names, addresses and status icons are displayed to
make estate management easy and efficient.
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
more focussed on those types of risks. However, burglary is still a
big problem for society. Many individuals are taking more of an
interest in protecting their property themselves. This has been
compounded by a perceived (or perhaps real) reduction in front
line Policing. We are finding more clients are managing this
themselves by engaging in private guards responding to alarms.
NSI approved companies know that specifying lower grades than
the risk is irresponsible and a short-term tactic. It can also be a
costly one if the signal doesn’t get through to the ARC. At CSS we
often over-specify, sharing our experience with our customers to
demonstrate to them the value and peace of mind this provides.
We would not install a Grade 3 in place of a Grade 4 system to
save a negligible amount of money and leave our customer open
to problems.
You have had lots of recent successes with Apprentices –
including at the Engineers of Tomorrow competition at
IFSEC and at the BSIA Awards. How important are
Apprentices to CSS?
Apprentices have been vital to our growth, without them we would
have been well and truly stuffed – no question! We are all
witnessing a severe shortage in available engineers and taking the
time to invest in Apprentices means that we can help ensure we
are better equipped in the future. The young talent coming through
today is enabling businesses to embrace new technologies, whilst
also allowing other staff to take on additional tasks as well as
share their knowledge. You can’t train experience, so at the same
time the talent pool needs to be a balanced mix of vibrant youth
and ‘long in the tooth’.
As part of your apprenticeship programme you work closely
with your local training provider, New College Lanarkshire.
How important has this relationship been to your success?
The College has been essential to our Apprenticeship programme.
We have had eight apprentices successfully complete their
qualification at the College over the past four years and have
another six starting this year. We know that the College provides
them with not only the training they need to pass their
assessments, but also the skills and knowledge to prepare them
for when they are on site. They are also open to our input on this
and ensure our Apprentices train using the equipment they will be
installing day-to-day. We believe this is an example to the rest of
the industry and encourage other Installers to engage with their
colleges to replicate our success. It can be done! It is an old
adage, if you don’t invest you’ll be out of business long-term and
of course people, especially younger people, are the key ingredient
for the future of our industry – discounting robots of course!
YOU SAID IT!
I've installed a good few of these units (MiniAirs) and they have worked great.
The app is a great bonus.
Transport networks planning to install IP cameras
More than 85% of transport networks across Western Europe are
planning to install IP cameras in the near future. That’s according to a
recent survey commissioned by Axis Communications, the market leader
in network video and audio technology, in partnership with the global
public transport organisation The Union Internationale des Transports
Publics (UITP).
Globally, the transport industry has led the way in using network video for both
security and commercial applications. IP video surveillance is also increasingly playing a
crucial role in the smooth and efficient running of significant parts of the UK’s rail
network, highlighted by the successful deployment of network camera technology at
Canary Wharf Station. This helped the station facilitate 24-hour rail operations and improve passenger safety.
The shift to IP video surveillance is helping operators utilise real-time analytics to enhance decision making, ranging from
common platform changes to the more infrequent critical scenarios, such as a station
clearance in response to a security threat or other emergency. For example, machine
learning technology is helping turn vast transport surveillance infrastructures into live
monitoring systems. This software identifies what is ‘normal’ activity within a scene,
automatically creating an alert if ‘abnormal’ activity is recognised.
Examining the emergence and importance of IP monitoring
Technology has changed how we communicate. The first alarm
systems were simple bells and whistles. Then we went through the
evolution of connecting alarm systems to phone lines, whereby an
alarm would trigger and ring the phone line, leading to voice
dialing and contacting a monitoring station. This method involved
transferring information using similar technology to a fax machine.
Periodically, if nothing was going on, the alarm would
automatically dial the monitoring station as a means of indicating
that everything was in working order. This is referred to as a test
call, and if the monitoring station didn’t receive this, it would know
something was wrong. That’s pretty much the way alarm
monitoring worked around the world for the last 30 to 40 years.
Now, the use of IP technology is becoming more widespread across a variety of applications and industries, and the security
industry is no exception. IP monitoring makes use of an internet connection to report alarms and other information to the monitoring
station. Here, an alarm event is generated by the alarm panel, sending an alarm, via an IP reporting protocol, over the
internet to the monitoring station. The IP Monitoring Receiver at the monitoring
station receives and processes the alarm, and sends it on to the monitoring
station software for handling by an operator.
Bat watching in Borneo’s UNESCO World Heritage Mulu National Park
Conditions could not be more challenging than in Borneo’s tropical rainforest, where temperatures reach up
to +30 degrees Celsius and humidity can be as high as 100 percent. Accessible only by boat or plane, the
wilderness of Mulu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Area since 2000, covers about 544 square miles,
an area equal to the size of Singapore. It is home to some of the largest documented cave systems on the
planet, and populated by bats and other rare wildlife.
After a former successful collaboration, the National Park Management asked CTG Security Matrix, a
Bosch Integrator, for advice on how to best monitor the area’s remote sites.
The resulting task: To enable the capture of clear video images from selected sites within the national
park’s cave network, observe and monitor wildlife including bats, and provide real-time surveillance.
Regardless of the challenging conditions like the total darkness in the caves, the images needed to be of
sufficient quality to appear on a monitor at the park’s Bat Observatory.
Extremely robust cameras were required, to function reliably 24/7, in extreme heat, humidity and
darkness. The cameras were to be placed inside the biggest cave chamber in the world, which is 175 metres
wide and has ceilings as high as 120 metres.
Taking all of the camera requirements and environmental factors into
consideration, three Bosch MIC IP starlight 7000 HD PTZ (pan, till, zoom) cameras
were the perfect choice for this harsh environment.
Defeating the grudge purchase
Commercial and industrial applications have always been the mainstay for many
security installers. Insurance requirements for a police first response, the deterrent
effect and the understandable costs of downtime and repairs after a break-in are all
reasons all businesses need security systems.
The same can’t be said of the domestic
market. Residential users don’t always
appreciate the benefits of a
professionally installed and maintained
system, meaning buying decisions are
often based on price rather than system performance.
Encouraged by stories in the press, many homeowners also doubt that the police will respond. The proliferation of DIY alarm
kits or ‘cheap’ fitted systems (and their associated false alarms) exacerbates this problem.
This means that for many domestic end users, an intruder alarm system is often seen as something of a ‘grudge purchase’.
This resistance by domestic customers to purchase professional security systems isn’t about to change overnight.
Research by Texecom shows that people often resent having to pay for an intruder alarm system, not because they
don’t see its value, but because it’s designed to stop them being a ‘victim’, with all the negative connotations this
involves. Texecom’s research also identifies widespread misconceptions in the domestic market about the cost of
professional alarm systems. For more visit: www.texe.com/uk/
PANEL
A future managed by AI
The combination of artificial
intelligence and video analytics
promises to bring new applications
to the use of surveillance systems,
but what does it mean for the
existing technologies we are
familar with? The PSI Panel
ponders the future of security
Everyone is talking about AI these days
(well, apart from the people talking about
cyber security anyway) so how exactly will
it fit into the security equation? Last month we
talked about the potential for cameras loaded
with AI and analytic functions so thought it best
to continue that discussion in this edition.
Therefore, we asked the PSI Panel of experts,
will surveillance cameras fitted with AI and
analytics integrated with an access control
system be the future of security? If cameras can
recognise behaviour, people and fires in
addition to motion detection and other factors
could they replace alarm and fire panels?
Kim Loy – Vanderbilt
Analytics combined with
access and intrusion systems
will certainly become more
popular and prevalent as the
technology progresses. I think
it is too early to boldly state
that it is the future of security. There are too
many use cases today where it wouldn’t be the
best fit based on lighting conditions,
environment and for interiors the shape and size
of a room. Although with the growing
popularity of multi-sensor cameras which in
essence can “look around corners” there will be
fewer uses cases where AI and analytics cannot
be adapted to perform well.
It will be quite some time before it would
replace alarm and fire panels. You could
potentially use less and less alarm panels, but it
will take significant improvement on the
surveillance and head-end software side to
ensure proper priority and display of alarms
without the processing and logic that is
currently done in the alarm panel. Our industry
is historically slow to adapt to change, but we
have made great strides in adopting new
technologies and learning how to apply them in
the most effective manner. I believe we will see
a strong increase in the use of cameras with AI
and analytics together with access and intrusion
systems; how quickly it could potentially takeover
is yet to be seen.
Stephen D Green –
Security Institute
There are two discrete
elements to this question. The
latter concerns the use of
video analytics in fire
detection and is largely being
answered by technology
providers already. The publication of the ISO/TS
7240-29:2017 standard for video-based fire
detection systems supports development work
being undertaken by several manufacturers.
Whilst it is clear that such technology offers
advantages over detection-based systems for
certain industries where close-quarter
monitoring is undesirable (such as in oil & gas
or nuclear applications), whether this
technology will ever replace conventional
detector-based systems wholesale will depend
on its operational efficacy and the pursuant
domestic legislation.
PANEL
38
(from previous page)
From a security professional’s perspective, of
far greater interest is the first part of the
question regarding integration of AI into
security systems. There have been various
claims of this over time, with neural networkbased
systems being able to “learn” patterns of
sensor activity indicative of attempts to security
breaches. IT security has certainly embraced AI
for network intruder and “big data” pattern
detection.
What is less well developed at this point is
the use of real-time behavioural analysis of
people and crowds. The use of AI to foretell
human intent remains the “Holy Grail” of
security. But given that the proverbial “Copper’s
Nose” fails to stand up to examination, proving
no more reliable than flipping a coin, it seems
the stuff of science-fiction that machine
intelligence might soon deliver what humans
cannot. However, given the current, seemingly
inexorable, exponential growth in computer
processing power, one would be a fool to
believe it won’t come at some point.
It is this that preeminent minds of our age,
including Elon Musk and the late Professor
Stephen Hawking, have voiced concern about.
At what point would an AI-enhanced security
system not need operators at all, and where
would that leave the criminal justice system?
“AI and analytics are two of the hottest topics in the security
industry at the moment but, as with any new technology,
there has to be a balance between need, affordability and
return on investment”
Neil Killick –
Milestone
Things are certainly heading
in that direction and AI and
analytics offer many exciting
possibilities, but we still need
to be a bit realistic.
The current situation
reminds me very much of how internet protocol
(IP) was viewed around 10 years ago. Rather
than the overnight sensation that some
predicted, IP gradually became integrated into
security solutions and has since been adopted
by a growing number of integrators and end
users who recognise its advantages.
I see a similar pattern of events with AI and
analytics, whereby they will initially be used to
augment existing technologies. This can be seen
in the way that AI is being used video content
analysis and changing how video technology is
used for surveillance.
Traditionally, video analytics has been rulesbased
with a human programmer setting fixed
parameters for every situation that a system
must recognise. Next generation video content
analysis systems, however, will identify
everything in a scene, learn about new items as
they appear and understand behaviour.
Similarly, when it comes to behavioural and
facial recognition, there are some incredible
things already being incorporated into cameras
that can help drive a more targeted police
response.
Regarding fire detection, I see the
replacement of traditional systems being a long
way off. Not only are these systems tried and
tested, it will take a huge leap of faith to swap
the use of control based fire detection, which
has a proven track record, with something that,
for the immediate future, doesn't. Furthermore,
there is the far from insignificant matter of
regulatory compliance and any standards would
probably have to be re-written to account for the
use of AI and analytics.
AI and analytics are two of the hottest topics
in the security industry at the moment but, as
with any new technology, there has to be a
balance between need, affordability and return
on investment. Devices using AI and analytics
are, at the moment, prohibitively expensive for
all but the wealthiest early adopters. However,
over time we will undoubtedly see prices come
down and enabled devices will become
commercially viable – so watch this space!
www.psimagazine.co.uk
David Davies – DVS
With the growing trend in
higher end products now
containing AI or other variants
thereof, we are seeing a big
migration over to the
analytical arena where video is
the primary source used to
pull all sorts of data that may be relevant to that
application. For example, fire detection, where a
typical looking CCTV camera that provides a
standard Day / Night image also contains an on
board application that will look for the presence
of fire, using extremely clever analytics and over
very impressive distances.
This is fantastic and anything we can do to
provide the earliest of warnings for the
presence of fire the better the chance we have
at ultimately preserving life and property. But
this comes with a warning that we should use
these in conjunction with traditional detections
methods that have been deployed for years
and work.
We are just complementing and increasing
the safety factor rather than replacing
traditional detections, however we may be some
time, if ever, when we would be completely able
to move solely to such technologies. That said,
our industry as always provides a great platform
for innovation and use of technologies, with
Amazon showing off their smart shopping
experience and others keen to follow, saving
time, money and increasing profitability.
A growing number of access control systems
are offering smart biometrics to increase
security levels while reducing time spent at
terminals, this ultimately reduces costs. I
believe we will see an increase in this sector,
you only need to look at social media to see how
intelligent these machines are getting! I can’t
wait to see what next 12 months has in store for
the security industry.
“Change is coming in every area of our lives, there will be a
convergence of technologies that will support all our daily
routine, including work and home and that will have to
include security”
exponentially, then we are simply not thinking
big enough.
Technology is driven by demand, not by
standards, I ask myself, would I like Alexa or Siri
to tell me someone is approaching my property,
give me the option to put the image on the TV,
announce through facial recognition who that
person is, or persons are?
Do I want systems to learn new people, learn
number plates, learn behaviour of when the milk
man or post man arrives, or a deliver from
Amazon, but then with all that Big Data, alert
me to any exceptions and possible threats,
strangers and unknown vehicles, automatically
to my phone or tablet, anywhere in the world?
Of course I would. We are now seeing AI
(artificial intelligence) move to IA (Intelligence
Assisted or Augmentation). The billions being
spent on AI and IoT that the world is describing
as the 4th Industrial Revolution shows “Fluent
Conversation” being possible between humans
and devices as soon (or as late) as 2030. If we
believe we will not be caught up in this world
wide technology revolution, then we are burying
our heads in the sand.
Change is coming in every area of our lives,
there will be a convergence of technologies that
will support all our daily routine, including work
and home and that will have to include security.
(continued over)
I read recently how we are
living in times where
technology and change is
exponential and when it
accelerates by an order of
magnitude as it has with Big
Data, then our human minds and just not
very true, I agree that if we are not thinking
PANEL
(from previous page)
Andy Palmer –
Seagate
We’re absolutely seeing AI
capabilities increasingly
integrated into security and
safety systems, and it's well
reported how important a role
it has to play in the future of
security. But as always, a diverse range of
technologies working in collaboration with one
another will offer the best results.
What’s important to note is that any security
and safety system requires a holistic approach.
The means an appreciation of how each tool fits
within a wider network, and an understanding
of how each component works within the
system.
As AI surveillance systems have to operate
constantly they are required to process swathes
of data, and that data needs to be efficiently
stored and easily accessible.
Marc van der Putten –
Pyronix
Fitting surveillance cameras
with AI and analytics certainly
has many intriguing
possibilities within an access
control system, but it isn’t a
technology that will be
replacing a security or fire panel anytime soon.
We can be sure that cameras will continue to
develop new and smarter features in terms of
facial and behavioural recognition with AI
analytics and it is this that will pose different
questions to security and fire panels.
Cameras, in theory, could phase out alarm
and fire panel capabilities in the future,
whereby, alongside AI analytics, they can
trigger the appropriate responses that security
and fire panels can, alongside added value
too, such as recognising who is approaching,
when conditions are normal and when there is
a problem.
However, cameras would need to be able to
differentiate between events to deliver the
“Technology and offerings will inevitably become increasingly
more sophisticated as integration continues, but the role of
cameras will more likely be to complement the system by
replacing sensors, rather than replacing the panels”
response required, such as contacting
emergency services, users, Alarm Receiving
Centres (ARCs) or keyholding services, with the
video or stream of what has or is happening.
Alongside this, regulations, approvals and
protocols would also have to be developed and
keep pace with the rate of technological
development that cameras, unlike panels, tend
to be subject to. For example, the amount of
time the system must run on its backup battery
or the volume of polling that it must action to
adhere to regulations.
Professional alarm and fire panels are
dedicated to security and life safety purposes
and therefore, every component is certified and
developed with this fundamental purpose in
mind; to alert the user or any occupants in the
event of any incident with a high level of
accuracy. The control panel continuously checks
the status of the entire system; connections,
inputs, outputs and communication paths, they
even monitor mains and backup battery and
when something fails, it immediately triggers a
warning. This development to stringent
standards minimises operating errors and
maximises performance and reliability.
The hardware and development of cameras
is with the fundamental purpose of capturing
images. The hardware is often connected either
directly or indirectly to the internet, which
makes cameras more accessible to hacking. So,
unless systems within the professional
industries begin to be developed without
stringent standards upholding the integrity of
security, cameras can be equipped with nice
features and extras that make them very
sellable, but, they would need a complete
redesign of purpose and hardware to even
begin to phase out alarm and fire panels
anytime soon.
We know that the technology to allow
cameras to replace such systems is possible
and we have seen with the development of total
solutions how rapidly the industry can change.
Technology and offerings will inevitably become
increasingly more sophisticated as integration
continues, but the role of cameras will more
likely be to complement the system by
replacing sensors, rather than replacing the
panels.
Cameras have the potential to one day
replace panels, but whether this is the direction
the industry will go in, only time will tell.
is that you come in each day and you
never know what is going to happen.
There is always a lot of firefighting in
this industry, for example there
could be a storm tonight which could
completely change the calls we get
tomorrow. Staffing issues at certain
times of the year can be problem. Over the summer holidays
when the schools are closed and people are away is naturally the
time when the schools want any work doing.
Customers not saying “but I can buy it
on the internet for .....?!” Some people
are surprised how much a
professionally installed and
maintained system can cost.
Steve Bird – Astra Security
In an ideal world, all of our work would
be completed during the hours of 9 till
5. At Astra, we have listened to our
customers and their requirements and
understand that this is not always
possible. To ensure that we are in a
position to respond and install around
the customers schedule, we have
invested and supply a 24hours, 7 days a week support
infrastructure meaning that we are able to support the customer
as quickly as they require.
Jacques Lombard – Syntinex
Time! We are a 24/7 industry and we
pride ourselves on customer services
and getting the job done right. You
always have those days where you want
those extra few hours in the day to make
sure everyone has been seen to and
problems dealt effectively.
Customers giving design
specification and type of equipment
more weight in their decision making
over cost. Each install is different and
we prefer to discuss and meet with
the customer and give them design
options which we believe to be in
their best long term interest but
other companies will quote with minimal equipment and less
specification to win the job. We may lose out on some occasions
but we believe our method is the correct way to do business.
David Barnes – Black Box
Accreditation is so important for the
industry and the businesses operating
within it. There needs to be clear
regulations driven by the appropriate
bodies and the insurance companies to
ensure that all security and life safety
systems are installed by a fully
accredited company.
Although my position can at times be
demanding and stressful I have a really
good team, they listen, learn and
achieve. They say a ship is only as
good as its crew and we have really
good crew here most of which have
been here for eight, twelve and 20
years - there’s not many companies that can say that and in this
day and age thats a real testament to the company.
The company is expanding and if we could only source the
apprentices and engineers we need to assist us with that growth
that would make make lots of jobs here a lot easier
CCTV
CCTV and factory security
The importance of security systems in food factories across
the UK and why CCTV should be included in any specification
By installing
surveillance systems,
food factories can
protect themselves
from threats that are
external and internal
as well as being able
to support themselves
in any claims
After news that meat wholesalers in the UK
were not complying with the requirements
set out by the Food Standards Agency
(FSAP) — investigations had to be carried out.
This investigation has impacted businesses such
as Wetherspoons, as well as schools and care
homes up and down the country.
After similar scandals presenting themselves in
the past, customers are beginning to lose their
trust in production companies and this could
potentially lead to supermarkets cutting
contracts. But what are the benefits of having
viable security systems in place?
With the advancements in technology, systems
can be designed that will help protect those
working in food factories, as well as those who
are eating the produce from them, whether this is
preventing a physical threat or a threat that
makes its way into our foods.
The first step for securing your premises is
installing access control systems. This will put an
instant barrier between operations and any entry
attempts by unauthorised personnel. Whether
this a swiped identification card, biometrics or a
passcode way of entry, only authorised personnel
will be granted access.
A popular feature to business premises to
ensure property protection is CCTV, but the
capabilities of such systems are much wider. By
spring 2018, all slaughterhouses within England are
required to have CCTV systems in place that can be
reviewed by the FSA who have unprecedented
access to footage within a 90-day period; so is this
something we should be looking to do in all food
factories to ensure safety for the British people?
According to 2020 Vision, CCTV is a great
investment for any food factories producing for
major supermarkets as it will allow them to gain
greater insights to their entire production line and
ensure the trust of customers across the country.
The key advantages using CCTV gives are:
• Customer reassurance — as food factories
don’t operate openly and everything is hidden
away, this instantly creates suspicion from a
consumer’s perspective as they will be the
ones buying the final product once distributed
to stores around the country. CCTV will counter
this issue as it shows that operation centres
have nothing to hide — giving them the ability
to publish any footage if accused of
misconduct.
• Maintaining quality — using more advanced
CCTV within food factories will enable
production companies to monitor the
production line and maintain the standards
that they sell themselves on. Sometimes, a
human error is unavoidable on a production
line after several hours of non-stop work —
being able to detect it instantly is essential.
Is crime high in factories?
Research has led us to belief that CCTV can deter
crime, and this has been backed up by the
installation in different areas across the country.
By installing surveillance systems, food factories
can protect themselves from threats that are
external and internal as well as being able to
support themselves in any claims of violation.
A common crime within the food production
sector is fraud, and this could have a bad effect on
the entire production line. 89% of manufacturers
on a global scale were impacted by fraud in 2015
— 2017 saw a 7% rise on this result.
The type of fraud that appears the most is
information theft (30%), followed by a
compliance breach (30%) and the theft of
intellectual ownership (26%). It was also found
that those who had recently started working for
the company, such as junior employees, were the
most common preparators when it came to fraud
within a manufacturing factory (39%). Temporary
manufacturing workers came in at second place
with 37%, while those in senior or middle
management positions were at 33% — the same
as ex-staff members. However, vendors/suppliers
who do not have as much access to your
business accounted for 33% too. This clarifies
that anyone has the potential to commit a crime
within a factory.
However, with the plans going ahead for spring
installation of CCTV in slaughterhouses maybe it’s
time to do the same in all food factories.
The benefits of BWCs
WiFi enabled BWCs
can stream footage
live to a central
control centre so that
the security team has
visibility of an
escalated incident
even in fixed IP
camera blind spots
Five things security installers should
know about body worn cameras
Body worn cameras (BWC) are becoming
increasingly important in the security
market, as when deployed correctly they
are proven to protect staff, enhance training and
generally ensure that best practice is followed.
We asked Richie McBride of Edesix to explain why
installers should take a look at utilising BWCs
alongside other surveillance options.
Why use body worn cameras?
Wearable cameras can provide two-fold
protection to staff – firstly, members of the public
naturally change and moderate their behaviour
for the better when they realise they are being
recorded, or might be recorded – but importantly
those cameras can then be used, when needed, to
record evidential quality footage to secure
convictions, or to uphold the account of staff in
the event of a complaint or incident.
Studies examining the use of BWCs show they
make a real difference in protecting frontline staff
and the public. Not only do they deter aggression
and in many cases eliminate the need to activate
a panic alarm or radio during an incident, but they
also help staff feel valued, safe and more
protected.
Body worn cameras have been proven to help
improve the safety of those in public facing roles,
whilst producing compelling legal evidence when
needed. A wearable camera system must be
simple to deploy, simple to manage and simple to
use; the BWC is a tool for the user to protect
themselves – but it isn’t the focus of their job, nor
should it be. It is essential they are easy to use
and easy to deploy with minimal training. In
addition, the back-office management suite needs
to be secure and able to deliver court-admissible
evidence packages.
Five things you need to know
1. Touch Assign technology can simplify BWC
workflows
BWC deployments can take advantage of existing
security installations with RFID door access
control systems. Security staff can assign
themselves cameras instantly and easily using
RFID Touch Assign technology using their door
access cards. Only cameras fully charged and
ready to use can be assigned, ensuring BWCs are
managed properly without the need for a member
of staff to be present to hand-out cameras
individually. Once assigned via an RFID card, that
camera is linked to the wearer to provide crucial
information about who recorded what and when.
2. BWCs can be seamlessly integrated into
leading Video Management Systems
In order to capture incidents in greater detail and
from the perspective of staff. WiFi enabled BWCs
can stream footage live to a central control centre
so that the security team has visibility of an
escalated incident even in fixed IP camera blind
spots. This also allows central security staff to
manage both systems side by side, saving time
and money.
3. BWC systems can be deployed to home
workers
New technology means an organisation’s BWC
network can be deployed to employees working
from home. Staff operating remotely, such as
bailiffs, simply retrieve their BWC from a dock
attached to a network device, at home or in a
remote office, at the start of their shift and return
it at the end of the day. All footage and camera
management information is then forwarded to a
central server during low broadband use periods,
or via the cloud, for review or use in court.
4. BWCs are proven to deter aggression and
protect staff
Retail staff, security teams and police and
transport officers are just some of the users of
BWCs who have stated that wearing a BWC makes
them feel safer at work. When recording is
activated it is made clearly visible to any potential
aggressors, reminding them that their actions
from this point can be turned into video evidence.
False complaints are also greatly reduced for
organisations using BWCs. A study by the
University of Cambridge found that police
complaints fell by 93% following roll-outs of
BWCs to frontline officers in the US and UK.
5. Incident Recorders are the latest
development for campus security
BWCs don’t all come in the one (large) size. Many
assume that BWCs are only for police and security
guards, but new smaller-sized Incident Recorders
are designed for regular staff in retail, campuses
and hospitals who might face abuse and
aggression only at certain times in their work.
Incident Recorders can live stream to a central
security room, much like a WiFi enabled BWC, to
complement a fixed IP camera system on site, but
can remain on stand-by for up to three months
before requiring a battery charge.
The formula for success
Relationships, trust and teamwork
– that’s the formula for business
success says expert Jim Rathbone
in his latest advice piece for
installers
ood relationships and trust are vital
Gingredients for building high performing
teamwork. And all three – relationships,
trust and teamwork - are essential for building
and sustaining success as a security installation
and service business.
So let me ask: why is management so often
almost exclusively focused on sales, marketing,
new technologies, pricing, customer service,
operations efficiency and financial
management?
These hard deliverables are obviously
important. Every one of us who has ever been a
business leader knows the importance of these
hard tangible measurements.
However, my experience in business
management and in working with security
installers is that there is a vital ingredient for
business success – without which no amount of
business savvy works – and that is teamwork
built on trust.
We can’t get away from the fact that effective
teamwork is built on relationships, and
relationships are built on trust.
Consider therefore the trust equation – as it
sheds light on both teamwork and relationships.
This trust equation is used by many
professionals in the global consultancy industry
who seek to build mutually beneficial business
relationships as trusted advisors.
Trust is a function of four factors. Three of
these factors positively contribute to trust. One,
in principle, detracts from trust.
Think about it:
Credibility + Reliability + Intimacy
Trust = -------------------------------------------
Self-Interest
Let’s break it down.
In the numerator of this equation, above the
line, trust builds in teams when there is:
• Competence – where team members show
up and are seen as capable to do their jobs,
professional within their respective disciplines
• Reliability - where team members are seen
to do what they say they will do, deliver as
promised, be true to their commitments
• Intimacy – where team members have real
work-relevant relationships that create positive
energy and good team dynamics
In the denominator of this equation, below
the line, trust and relationships are enhanced
when the self-interest of the individual
concerned is secondary to their interest in what
is good for the business or their
(continued over)
We can’t get away
from the fact that
effective teamwork is
built on relationships,
and relationships are
built on trust
www.psimagazine.co.uk
49
(continued from previous page)
interest in others. By contrast, if self- interest is
greater than the interest an individual has in the
business or in others, trust will be eroded as
colleagues realise that such an individual is
more in it for themselves than for the team or
the organisation. Trust and relationships are
therefore damaged when interest is primarily
directed toward self.
Think about how this manifests at a team
level - when a lack of interest and understanding
and respect manifests between sales teams and
marketing or installation or service or finance
teams.
These ingredients of teamwork and
relationships and trust are vital at all times – yet
they are especially critical when a business is
going through significant change and transition.
This is likely to be the case when a new senior
manager joins the team, or when a business
owner hands over the day-to-day running of the
company to the management team, or when a
business is acquired and a new senior team
How are you building trust within
your teams and with your key
players? Trust is key for long-term
success – and especially critical in
times of transformation and
significant change.
begins to call the shots, or when a company
needs to be turned round. Trust at such times
needs to be recalibrated and the different
components of the trust equation need to be
thought through.
At such times business leaders and team
members find themselves asking questions -
whether these questions are voiced or not:
• Can so-and-so do the job? Are they able
and willing to put in the necessary effort?
(competence)
• Is so-and-so reliable? Will they deliver on
their promises? Why are they not delivering as
they promised? ( reliability)
• Can I relate to so-and-so? Can I have a real
conversation with them? Will they include me in
their thinking? (intimacy)
• Is so-and-so really interested in the needs
of the business? Are they thinking about what
the business needs - or are they primarily
interested in their own gain, personal end-goals,
personal achievement? (self-interest )
Three final thoughts:
1. Trust takes a long time to be established –
yet it often takes only one occasion for it to be
lost.
2. Relationships (implied through “intimacy”
and “self-interest”) are at the heart of good
team-working. Good relationships in business
are essential for delivering great customer
service, high sales performance and positive
financial results.
3. Especially if you are in business for the
long-term, consider the anonymous African
proverb which says: “If you want to go fast, go
alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
So let me ask: how are you building trust
within your teams and with your key players?
Trust is key for long-term success – and
especially critical in times of transformation and
significant change.
Airport deploys mmWave fibre
solution for remote connections
The John Glenn Columbus International Airport in
Columbus, Ohio, has deployed mmWave radios
from Siklu providing wireless connectivity for a
remote building and the airport runway for the
purposes of local area network connectivity (LAN,
internet, VOIP).
The airport, which is the largest passenger
airport in central Ohio and second busiest in the
state with over 150 flights daily, had a need for a
wireless network to connect its Shipping and
Receiving Building, which is a detached building
located half a mile across the runway. The building
receives daily shipments from external couriers.
The previous wireless system did not provide a
robust, interference-free connectivity or the
bandwidth required.
Paradigm Housing Group
visualises security
Paradigm Housing Group manages over 14,000
homes across 33 local authorities. Its new
development at Hitchin Road in Luton offers 97
“There was no infrastructure to support a fibre
connection so it would have been extremely costly
and time consuming to run a pathway for conduit
and for the fibre, as well,” said Kristina Baker,
PMP, Project Manager for Technical Services, with
the Columbus Regional Airport Authority. “It’s a
very busy building and we needed reliable
network connectivity to process shipments
received or shipments going out.”
The location of the building presented
connectivity challenges due to the potential for
network interference from inclement weather and
other airport vehicles moving across the runway
throughout the day. Another major concern was
regarding planes interfering with the wireless
communication as they taxi down the runway. The
airport determined that it required interferencefree,
reliable connectivity to ensure uninterrupted
local area network connectivity and smooth
operation.
Convergint Technologies served as the systems
integrator for the project and proposed a Siklu
mmWave wireless fibre solution. The company
installed two point to point EH-1200FX 70/80GHz
Gigabit radios. Transmitting high bandwidth
information across security networks, the radios
provide interference-free connectivity with
99.999% availability, leveraging narrow beams
which are immune to heavy Wi-Fi signals within
the airport. The radios can stream applications
including HD and 4K video cameras and other IoT
sensors.
The airport, which is currently testing the use
of high-definition cameras on the Siklu mmWave
network, is considering adding cameras to the
network in the future.
one and two-bedroom apartments.
Comelit Group was selected by Silver Group,
part of the supply chain that worked in
partnership with Paradigm Housing Group to
install the access control solution.
Comelit has installed nine stainless steel,
bespoke designed entrance panels covering all
entry points for the residential development,
together with mini colour monitors in every
apartment, using slimline options from its
SimpleBus door entry solution.
Sergio de Michele, Managing Director of
Silver Group added: “Having reviewed different
options of video intercoms for the apartment
blocks on the Hitchin Road site, we selected the
hardwearing, durable stainless steel bespoke
outer panels from Comelit and complementing
mini video handsets.
“Our clients liked the units for their clean
modern look and easy to use interface. For Silver
Group, installation with the two-wire SimpleBus
interface was much simpler than the alternative
options.”
The Mini handset-based colour monitors have a
slim and compact profile and offer a range of
functions, including a 4.3-inch 16:9 colour
screen, contrast, colour and ringtone volume
control and melody customisation.
KL Tower upgrades from
analogue camera system
The Kuala Lumpur (KL) Tower is a famous
landmark and scenery spot in Malaysia. It is a
multi-functional compound building with
telecommunication and broadcasting
operations. Every year a great amount of tourists
visit the KL Tower for sightseeing and business
purposes. As more and more customers visit the
tower, traditional analogue cameras and DVR
solutions were no longer able to meet its video
surveillance needs, and the KL Tower authority
started to look for an advanced security system
to tighten up the public security.
The widely distributed network areas,
scalable architecture and maintenance issues
(e.g. hard to go up to the top to fix cameras) are
the challenges the project manager first faced.
The data retention of recorded videos and the
scalable, end-to-end, and robust support for
hundreds of megapixel cameras for the whole
system structure are particularly important to
the planning and acceptance of the
governmental public utilities.
Security project manager Mohd Salim
Ghonah of Vims Technology said: “Integration
tasks do bring us a lot of troubles. Of course, in
a project like this, you may need to purchase
cameras, VMS, NVR, and storage systems.”
Complicated integration and verification
tasks not only consume many invisible
resources, but also contain other potential risks
of integration. For example, when video
recording is malfunctioning, which device is the
cause? Sometimes the integration of VMS and
Helping to keep Istanbul ferry
passengers safe
250 Wisenet cameras have been installed
throughout 20 ferries operated by City Lines in
Istanbul.
Having decided to offer a new ferry service
between Istinye and Cubuklu, which are on
different sides of the Bosphorus, City Lines asked
security systems integrator InfoMET Technologies,
to recommend video surveillance cameras which
could help keep passengers and the ferries safe
and secure. The cameras would be
required to cope with sea conditions
as well as capture high resolution
images day or night.
In addition to keeping a close
eye on passengers, the cameras are
also used to monitor the movement of
2,000 vehicles which are transported
daily and are a valuable navigational
tool for captains, as they enable to them
to view blind spots which cannot be seen
from the bridge.
The majority of the 250 cameras installed
are Wisenet QNO-7080Rs which are part of the
Wisenet Q series. These 4 Megapixel bullet
cameras have built-in IR illumination, H.265
compression and WiseStream.
PC causes the system to be unstable too.
The KL Tower deployed Surveon clustered
video surveillance solutions, which contain IP
cameras, RAID NVR, IP storage and enterprise
central management software. 3-megapixel IP
cameras were installed at the crucial points and
areas of the tower to more efficiently monitor
the premises and people coming in and going
out: CAM3365 fixed bullet for day and night
usage, and CAM4365 fixed dome for outdoor
surveillance.
Network video recording is handled by
Surveon’s NVR2000 enterprise NVR, which offers
up to 48 channels of megapixel recording and 36
hard drives for 120 days of video content
storage. Surveon’s iSCSI-based RAID NVR
provides scalable architecture which brings
lower maintenance effort, fewer required hard
disks and lower cost.
When WiseStream is combined with H.265
compression, bandwidth efficiency is improved by
up to 75% compared to current H.264 technology.
The QNO-7080R also features Hallway View, True
Wide Dynamic Range, Tamper Detection, Defocus
Detection, and Lens Distortion Correction.
Hallway View provides a highly effective way to
monitor narrow vertical areas such as corridors,
tunnels and aisles. It enables cameras which can
generate images in the 9:16 x 3:4 aspect ratio, to
work effectively in tall and narrow spaces.
