Queen’s decked out for its 160th reunion
UEEN’S College is celebrating the
Qschool’s 160th reunion this
weekend with a jam-packed
programme of activities throughout.
The cadet corps’ Freedom of the
City parade along Cathcart Road at
10am yesterday, and the arrival of the
1965 Ride cyclists from
Johannesburg and the East London
cyclists at the Recreation Grounds at
12.45pm marked the start of the
festivities, which are set to draw to a
close on Sunday.
The national executive of the
Queen’s College Old Boys’
Association (QCOBA) also met at
4pm yesterday in the Natal Room
with the first XI hockey team facing
off against the 2008 Old Boys on the
Chris Harker Astro at 6pm.
A combined reunion assembly at
8.30am will take place in the
Memorial Hall with special addresses
by 2008 head boy Ayabonga Cawe
and acting QCJ headmaster Colin
Hartley. The Queen’s College Cadet
Detachment No 3 trooping the colour
parade takes place on the Rec at
11am today. Enjoy a host of sporting
and cultural activities with the
college coming up against traditional
rivals, Selborne College, of East
London, from 1pm onwards, with
squash, debating, chess and hockey
matches also being contested.
The QCOBA annual general
meeting takes place in the staff
room, Old School Quad, at noon for
12.30, with the soccer match
between the Queenians and Old Boys
set for 2.30pm at the TW Higgs field.
The Queen’s Barbarians rugby
clash takes place at 4pm on the Rec
with the QCOBA banquet scheduled
for 6.30 for 7pm in the Queen’s
Junior Hall. Sporting clashes against
Selborne College take centre stage
tomorrow with cross-country, hockey
and rugby fixtures taking place.
The QC Junior tuckshop will
operate during the morning session,
while the tuckshop at the Rec will
operate during the full programme.
Light lunches will be served for Old
Boys in the Cullinan Pavilion after
the last morning match until 1.30pm.
The Rec entrance fee will be R20
per person with grandstand seats on
a first-come-first-served basis.
The third XV kick-off is at 12.20pm
the second XV at 1.30pm.
Skydiving and the war cry on the
Rec take place before the first XV
kick-off at 3pm. The post-match
function will be hosted by the Mother
Branch of the QCOBA with light
meals available.
The weekend activities will
conclude with the Foundation Day
commemoration service at 9.30am in
the DC Scott Amphitheatre, with tea
to follow in the Queen’s Hall and Old
School Quad.
An information centre will operate
at the QCOBA office in the Old
School Quad today between 8am and
3.30pm, and tomorrow between 9am

INGONYAMA – Reunion
Weekend 2018 celebrates 160
years of education excellence
at Queen’s College and many
Old Boys will return again to
Komani to rekindle memories
and friendships formed during
their time in this “hill-girt town” .
From the Freedom of the City
parade, the welcoming of the
cyclists on Thursday, the Friday
Reunion assembly, the Trooping
the Colour parade, the
President’s Dinner, the sporting
fixtures against our old rival,
Selborne College on Saturday, to
the festivities at the tent and the
Reunion Commemoration
Service on Sunday, a feast of
activities will take place that will
rekindle happy memories and
convince Old Boys that Queen’s
College remains an institution to
be proud of.
During this past year we have
seen change with past
headmaster Brendan Grant and
family leaving for Cape Town,
and we have welcomed in a new
era with new headmaster Janse
van der Ryst taking the helm at
our Alma Mater, Queen’s
College.
At the junior school, we have
said farewell to outgoing
headmaster Richard Second who
has retired.
I have been privileged and
honoured to have represented
this great association of the
QCOBA as national president for
the past year and I have
travelled to branches around
the country and met with Old
Boys and, together with school
representatives, informed them
of the changes, goals and
visions for the school.
It continues to be a blessing
to see that Old Boys remain
loyal supporters of Queen’s
College.
The QCOBA welcomes Old
Boys from near and far to
celebrate Reunion Weekend and
we pray you will have a
wonderful time and, on leaving,
look forward to your next visit
and reunion at Queen’s College.
