Hearing Support turns 80 RICCARTON’S Hearing Support Christchurch celebrated its 80th birthday recently. The business has seen many changes in that time, especially in hearing aid and communication technology and people’s attitudes to hearing loss. Hearing Support has been around during many of these changes, assisting those with hearing loss live more productive lives. It can clean and change tubing on your hearing aids and its field worker visits rest homes to take care of residents hearing aids. Hearing Support offers community talks and education about hearing loss prevention and coping strategies, as well as staff education for those who work with the hearing impaired. HALSWELL LEARNING Tree has branched out and opened a nursery. The early childhood centre started planning the nursery in October after identifying a need for it in the community. It already had a pre-school which accommodates about 30 children aged between two and five-years-old. The nursery is licenced for a maximum of 20 children. The centre’s months of planning paid off as Labour MP for Port Hills Ruth Dyson cut the ribbon to the nursery. Its annual garage sale last year raised $1200 for the nursery – which went towards natural wooden furniture and resources. The nursery’s opening had a free bouncy castle, sausage sizzle and face-painting for the children. The new well-being tool – organised by post-earthquake recovery campaign All Right? – encourages Cantabrians to enjoy some “guilt-free downtime”, utilising free dice that feature feel-good suggestions, such as enjoying the outdoors or making community connections. The dice are also available for pick-up at Central Library on Peterborough St, and the New Brighton, Papanui, Shirley, South libraries, along with several cafes. All Right? manager Sue Turner underlines the importance of prioritising downtime. “A few minutes of quality downtime can boost our energy, focus, creativity, productivity and happiness,” Ms Turner says. “Sometimes we need a gentle reminder that it’s OK to take a break, and that’s where our downtime dice come in.” The downtime dice suggests a range of simple activities, such as enjoying music, getting outside, or catching up with a friend. The footage would then be passed onto police, Mr Moore said. “So we will wait till the cameras arrive before we put even bigger signs up,” he said. Mr Moore did not believe one of his neighbours removed the signs as they were all against the proposed quarry. “We are opposed to the quarry because it will end up close to our houses,” he said. Mr Moore blamed the incident on supporters of the quarry and did not believe a local authority was responsible for their removal. He also delivered a message for those responsible. “Leave them alone, they are not your property and don’t start taking retribution against people who want to have a right to their say,” Mr Moore said. Templeton Residents Association chairman Garry Kilday believed the incidents were isolated to Curraghs Rd. He called on quarry supporters to express their views by making signs smiliar to the anti-quarry signs. “Don’t remove an anti-quarry sign, put ‘I support the quarry on your gate post’,” Mr Kilday said. Last month Templeton residents who had more than one sign on display were ordered to remove them or face a $300 by the city council.
