(CNCA) technical experts in April
2015,with aseparate team of
inspectors from the General Administration
of Quality Supervision,
BSE
Scientists investigate origin of isolated epidemic cases
The European response to bovine
spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)
after the crisis of the 1980s has
significantlyreduced prevalence of
the disease in cattle. However,
isolated cases are still being reported
in the EU and for this reason
the European Commission asked
EFSA to investigate their origin.
The key measure for controlling
BSE in the EU is aban on the use of
animal proteins in livestock feed.
This is because BSE can be transmitted
to cattle through contaminated
feed, mainlyinthe first year
of life.The Commission asked EFSA
to determine if these cases were
caused by contaminated feed or
whether they occurred spontaneously,
i.e. without an apparent
cause. EFSA experts concluded that
contaminated feed is the most likely
source of infection. This is because
the infectious agent that causes
Advertisement
BSE has the ability to remain active
for many years. Cattle may have
been exposed to contaminated feed
because the BSE infectious agent
was present where feed was stored
or handled. Asecond possibility is
that contaminated feed ingredients
may have been imported from non-
EU countries. Experts could not rule
out other causes due to the difficulty
of investigating individual
cases. Some constraints are the
long incubation period of the disease
and the lack of detailed information
at the time of the traceback
investigation.
Meat Market
Pork bellies prices high
The seasonal upswing in bacon consumption, combined with tight supplies
of slaughter-ready hogs has pushed prices for pork bellies to record highs in
UK and the US. In the United States, wholesale prices for pork bellies soared
more than 70% since the start of 2017,while retail prices for bacon jumped
more than 20%. Meanwhile, pork bellies in cold storage are at a60-year low.
In the United Kingdom, it’s the same story.Average prices for bacon have
advanced 10%, while sausage prices have surged an average of 20%. Demand
for pork in China has been cited as the main driver of higher prices for
pork. The conditions of tight supplies, strong demand and higher prices are
forecast to persist into 2018.Inits Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook
report, the Economic Research Service (ERS) of the USDA said pork production
is likelytoincrease for the balance of 2017 and into 2018.
