HOW TO BECOME A
HERITAGE AWARDED SCHOOL
This practical session will give you the chance to
explore the history of the area using maps and aerial
photographs from our archives. We will show you
how to trace changes in the historic landscape and
give you a step by step guide on how to carry out a
local history study using census data, trade directories and free
websites. You’ll be able to research a street near your school and
find out who lived there and what life was like. It’s easy once you
know how!
We will give you the tools to enable you to carry out enquiry based
learning activities based around a local heritage site, and showcase
many of the school resources we have developed that are specific
to your area and tailored to the new History Curriculum.
Teachers will receive a teaching pack at the end of the day which
contains a set of maps and photos, a How To guide, access
to 100s of free resources from our members only website,
a downloadable local time line and a set of goodies for the
classroom.
“Our Heritage Schools programme aims to help school children
develop an understanding of their local heritage and its
significance. The programme has been running since September
2012 in eight regions across England, and since April 2015 the
opportunity is being offered to all state schools, both primary and
secondary” Kate Argyle, Historic England
This is also an opportunity to find out more about the exciting
future for school visits at Lincoln Cathedral once the new Learning
Centre is open. Find out how you can be involved in the programme
development.
