BREENS Intermediate School
principal Nikki Clarke dreads the
day she gets a phone call saying one
of her pupils has been hurt at the
contentious Harewood, Gardiners
and Breens Rd intersection.
“I believe it’s only a matter of time
before someone is injured or worse
. . . it will be so terribly sad when we
know we could have been pro-active
and done something to make it
safer,” said Mrs Clarke during a city
council Long Term Plan 2018-2028
submission last week.
Mrs Clarke represented one of
two schools which submitted on the
intersection, joining the fight with
city councillor Aaron Keown to get
the intersection upgraded to lights.
Cr Keown has been lobbying to
have the intersection upgraded for
more than two years, and said he
has been contacted about it more
than any other issue over his 10
years of being elected.
Breens Intermediate is 350m
from the intersection, which
sees 10 lanes converging, and Mrs
Clarke said more than a third of
pupils pass through it to get to
school.
THE DRUM is beating to see an upgrade of the Breens,
Harewood and Gardiners Rd intersection.
Emotional submissions were made by schools at the Long
Term Plan 2018-2028 hearings last week (see page 1).
Children spoke about their fears when crossing the
intersection, which sees 10 lanes converging.
The issue affects many groups which are all pushing for lights
to be installed.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel doesn’t believe lights are the answer,
though, saying they could make the intersection busier and, as a
result, more dangerous.
But one eight-year-old told city councillors last week – “we
need lights before someone gets killed, not after.”
Let’s hope funding is granted so changes can be made.
Row over historic St Albans villa settled
• By Kurt Bayer
A LEGAL row over the
potentially multimillion-dollar
repair bill to a quake-damaged
historic St Albans villa has now
been settled.
The debate over costs to repair
Elizabeth Drayton’s beloved
category one-listed property
reached the High Court last
week after nearly six years of
wrangling.
Drayton
claimed her
insurer, IAG New
Zealand, the
parent company
of State, offered
Elizabeth
Drayton
a strategy to
repair the badly
damaged house
with a fixed quote
of $1.84 million.
However, she said reviews of
the repair strategy, which took
into account associated costs,
put the rebuild at $3.1 million.
However, the dispute was
settled after the first day of the
hearing.
Ms Drayton refused to
comment about the settlement.
She became emotional
in court last Tuesday when
describing how the heritage
property was devastated in
the September 4, 2010, and
February 22, 2011, quakes. The
double-brick villa was built in
1899 by master builders and
bricklayers, brothers Harry and
Philip Soanes, as a luxury show
home to exhibit their high-level
workmanship.
Ms Drayton fell in love with
the house, with its Kauri floors
and doors, Victorian veranda,
Marseille roof tiles, stained
glass, arches and detailed brick
corbels, after returning from
London where she had renovated
three Victorian properties.
She bought the property in
2004 and moved in soon after,
naming it “Soanes House”
and sculpting award-winning
gardens. With her father being
a founding member of the
New Zealand Historic Places
Trust, now known as Heritage
New Zealand, Drayton told the
court she had a “strong sense
of responsibility to its heritage”
and carried out $250,000 in
renovations from 2007-2009,
including strengthening its roof.
But when the magnitude 7.1
earthquake struck in 2010, the
villa suffered extensive interior
and exterior damage.
The Boxing Day, 2010,
aftershock caused more cracking
before the deadly 2011 jolt
smashed it even more.
In 2015, a quantity surveyor
assessed the repairs to be $1.5
million, the court heard.
An original peer review
put the repair costs at $1.9
million before escalating to $2.6
million.
But Ms Drayton says in May
last year, IAG came up with a
new strategy for repair with a
fixed quote of $1.8 million.
She ordered a review of the
strategy by the original quantity
surveyor who took into account
associated costs that Ms Drayton
says were not considered by IAG,
which spiralled the repair bill to
$3.1 million. - NZ Herald
Edgeware Pool worth the cost
On the
back of the
Papanui-Innes
Community
Board’s request
for $5 million
from the city
council to
build the Edgeware Pool,
member Jo Byrne clears
up any confusion over the
funding bid
THERE ARE tough decisions
to be made by city councillors
currently working through the
LTP. This includes trying to keep
rates at a manageable level for
all, while balancing this with
community desires for facilities
and services.
I would like the public to know
that the request for money for the
Edgeware Pool Group actually
came from the Papanui-Innes
Community Board not the pool
group.
There has been some
misinformation about this in the
media recently.
We believe that this model is
excellent – this is an outstanding
community group working
hard to replace a much-loved
and needed community facility.
This pool won’t have ongoing
operating expenses, unlike the
extravagant pools and leisure
centres planned elsewhere in the
city.
The budget for this pool is $5
million. For this we get a larger
summer pool, and a smaller
covered learners’ pool to provide
year-round lessons for those
learning to swim.
We could build four of these
modest facilities across the city
for the price of the one planned
in Linwood, or the one in
Hornby. We are a city in recovery
PLANS: The new designs for the Edgeware Pool include an
indoor learners’ area and heated outdoor pool.
and we need to be building more
simple facilities initially and add
to them as we can.
Swimming pools are extremely
important to an island nation
such as ours. We need our
children and young people to be
able to swim and be safe in the
water that is all around us. We
need community pools to do
this.
The Ministry of Education has
reduced access to pools through
school pool closures – often the
schools still with pools are more
affluent.
We can’t turn into a country
where only people who can
afford to learn to swim do so.
PHOTO: APOLLO DESIGN
We need to make swimming
accessible and affordable for all
and a pool in Edgeware is a great
step in this process. Every time
we talk to communities and
they tell us what they want – the
children say a pool.
Children don’t get to vote
but should have a voice. I urge
everyone to support the new pool
at Edgeware.
Come along to the Edgeware
Pool Group’s next quiz night at
Bailies Bar on Colombo St to
support its fundraising.
This group is not sitting round
waiting for a handout, but I truly
hope the city gives them a hand
up.
“I have to run for dear life so I
Harewood School principal
Julie Greenwood said the safety
of her pupils and their families
needs to be prioritised.
“A number of families in this
area have indicated to us that
they find the intersection a real
barrier for sending children to
Two pupils, Jacob Bates, 10,
“Some people say they won’t
We need lights before someone
gets killed, not after.” said
Frances.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel agreed
that something needs to be done,
however, she said traffic lights
may not be the answer.
“We have heard from people
living in the Fendalton area, where
the installation of traffic lights
has actually had a worse affect, it’s
made it more popular for traffic to
Dealing with door-knocking peddlers
Get your
‘do not knock’
BRYNDWR RESIDENTS could
receive more education about
their rights when it comes to
door-to-door sales reps and
mobile truck shops.
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board deputy
chairman Aaron Campbell said
Bryndwr and Linwood are two
suburbs being targeted by these
groups which can be hard to
turn down.
“When you get door-knocked
by these door-to-door sales
people, some of them can be
difficult to say no to . . . I talk to
people and they get stressed by it
basically.”
Mr Campbell is working with
city council staff to create Welcome
to Bryndwr packs which
will contain ‘do not knock’
stickers and information about
consumer rights.
“This will give people good
information about what their
rights are when that happens.”
The packs will be similar to
others in the city, which have
information about local community
groups, programmes and
activities, including the Citizens
Advice Bureau, Neighbourhood
Support and Tenants’ Protection
Association.
Mr Campbell hopes they could
be distributed to people living
in social housing units, such as
those managed by the Otautahi
Housing Trust and Housing NZ.
They may also be distributed
through community groups to
other members of the community,
particularly people who are
older or living alone.
Mr Campbell said the stickers
are well-known in the industry
and have been around for a
while.
“People may know about
them but might not be sure
where to get them . . . this will
hopefully be a disincentive for
those sales people to knock on
the doors.”
He would like the Government
Aaron
Campbell
wants
to make
information
about
consumer
rights more
accessible
for residents
in Bryndwr
who may
be targeted
by doorknockers
and
mobile sales
trucks.
to “take bolder steps” to ensure
door-knockers and mobile truck
shops are operating within
the law, and would like to see
a review of the Public Places
Bylaw to ensure it is clear where
these businesses are permitted to
THE CANTERBURY Down
received a boost of $12,420 from
structural engineering firm
Constructure.
To celebrate its 10th anniversary,
Constructure launched a
Givealittle page in April, inviting
its customers to donate to a good
cause as an ‘unorthodox birthday
present.’
The firm donated $10,000 and
it’s clients donated $2420.
Constructure founder Cory
Bedford said he was excited that
his clients got into the spirit.
“I really want to thank all our
customers for their generosity
that will make a big difference
for a small local charity like the
CDSA.”
The CDSA provides support,
education, and advocacy to its
Said CDCA chairwoman Diane
Mulholland: “We are just overwhelmed
and grateful that this
amazing gift got even bigger.”
The $10,000 gift was not chosen
randomly but symbolises the
target of 10,000 projects the
Constructure team wanted to
Camera to nab Bealey Ave red light-runners
• By Julia Evans
THE CITY is about to get a
camera to catch red light-runners
– the first since the 1990s.
The camera is being installed
at the Bealey Ave and Madras
St intersection, but will move
around
the city’s
“high risk”
intersections,
city council
acting head
of transport
Mark Pinner
said.
“The list of
Kelly Larsen
Glen Koorey
intersections
and how long
the camera
will remain
in one place
has yet to be
decided,” he
said.
The camera
records
vehicles
travelling
through the
intersection,
the footage
is then put
through software, which detects
red light-running incidents.
Police and the city council
are investigating enforcement
CAUGHT: A camera to catch red light-runners is being installed
at the intersection of Bealey Ave and Madras St.
options, Mr Pinner said. But it
would be run on the same
model as cameras currently
used in Wellington and
Auckland, he said.
“Council will be informing
motorists about red light camera
enforcement, and signage will be
part of that information.”
He said the city council has
launched the campaign to reduce
numbers, as crashes at signalised
intersections are a “really
significant” road safety problem
in the city.
“Traffic signal crashes are close
to a quarter of all crashes in the
city, with a social cost of about
$27 million per year.
“Red light-running is a part
of the problem and needs to be
addressed,’’ Mr Pinner said.
Acting road policing manager
Senior Sergeant Kelly Larsen said
red light-running incidents were
too high.
“More drivers than we would
like enter intersections on orange
lights. These often change to
red while the driver is still in
the intersection, creating an
unnecessary road safety risk,” she
said.
It comes with the release of a
report from traffic engineering
consultants ViaStrada –
Factors influencing red light
running - a Christchurch
investigation – which said the
proportion of red light-running
crashes in Christchurch is
“very high” compared with other
cities.
“Red light-running crashes
account for approximately 35
per cent of all injury crashes
at signalised intersections in
Christchurch . . . this proportion
issue . . . and it is an issue that
keeps coming up,” report author
and ViaStrada senior traffic
engineer and transport planner
Glen Koorey said.
He said there were a “number
of factors” that lead drivers to
run red lights, including attitude,
the type of intersection, visibility
and driver distraction.
“There’s a mix of things
that might work to reduce the
numbers,” Dr Koorey said.
A red light-running
road safety campaign is also
being investigated, Mr Pinner
said.
Cobb & Co
coming to
Cranford St
FAMILY RESTAURANT Cobb &
Co is set to return to Christchurch
later this year.
The New Zealand-owned
‘western-saloon-style’ restaurant
is expected to open at 484 Cranford
St before Christmas.
Cobb & Co managing director
Ben Gower said the 200-seat
restaurant and children’s play area
will have a “hybrid” of “old Cobb
favourites and some new stuff” on
its menu.
“The menu will have lots of
items customers will remember
– our Cobb schnitzel, shrimp
cocktails and traffic light drinks,”
said Mr Gower.
“We are excited to have a presence
back in Christchurch. We
know from previous openings in
the last four years that our restaurants
have been popular additions
to the hospitality scene.”
At its peak, Cobb & Co had 37
restaurants across the country.
In 2016, the company announced
plans to establish as many as
30 new restaurants around
the country. The chain opened
in 1973, with its trademark red saloon
style doors. Mr Gower said
there isn’t any plans to open a
second restaurant just yet.
Village residents have won
the battle of the buses after
Environment Canterbury bent
over backwards to include them
on a new route.
About 80 pensioners living in
the retirement village on Philpotts
Rd, Mairehau, presented
a petition to ECan, pleading for
it to reconsider route changes to
the Orbiter bus which would see
their closest bus stop move 900m
away from the village.
ECan originally proposed
cutting its bus route outside
the village and moving it 1km
away to Innes Rd. But, during a
packed meeting in the village on
Friday, ECan staff presented a
new route.
ECan chairman Steve Lowndes
said he hoped residents liked
what had been planned.
“I told you (at the protest) we
would bend over backwards to
find a solution to suit you.”
The new proposal will see the
No 44 Shirley bus connect close
to the village, and a new stop
will be provided 150m from the
entrance.
The bus will run every half
More girls needed for
new under-16 grade
• By Zahra Shahtahmasebi
CHRISTCHURCH’S new
under-16 girls rugby grade has
only just enough players to
field three teams for a 10-a-side
competition.
The grade, which was set up after
the Canterbury Rugby Football
Union ruled last
year that girls must
be 16-years-old to
play in the women’s
competition, needs a
dramatic increase in
numbers to be able
to offer a 15-a-side
competition.
CRFU chief
executive Nathan
Godfrey said the
grade aimed to support
the growth of women’s rugby
by creating a safe and inclusive
environment for girls to have fun.
But under-16s grade manager
Tamara Toaolamai said the CRFU
was paying lip-service to the idea,
as not a lot of thought has been
put into the development of the
grade.
She said the CRFU had put the
responsibility for recruiting more
players on parents and coaches
like Toaolamai.
“I’m a teacher and a mum of
four – I don’t have the time to go
around and promote a grade, and
it’s actually not my job.”
A new women’s and school girls’
Tamara and Naia
Toaolamai-Holden
rugby development officer has
been appointed by the CRFU, but
it is unclear if they have had any
active involvement with promoting
the grade.
Toaolamai’s daughter and High
School Old Boys’ top try scorer
from last season Naia Toaolamai-
Holden, 15, has been forced to
watch her former team
from the side-line following
the CRFU’s new
age rule.
She said the women’s
grade had been a great
environment for her
as it provided opportunities
to learn from
experienced players
like former Black Fern
Amiria Rule. She is one
of the oldest and most
experienced players in the new
under-16s grade.
Burnside women’s assistant
coach Claude Smith said the grade
needed to be focused on providing
quality competition, resources and
supportive coaches to help grow
the game for both experienced
and new players.
Ash Brett, 14, has played rugby
for 10 years, and was disappointed
to be missing out on the chance to
develop her game in the women’s
grade. “I don’t think age matters
as much as experience does – if
you have played rugby for a number
of years at a high standard, age
shouldn’t matter.”
US cricket team lures opener
SPORTS
• By Jacob Page
DAVID WAKEFIELD grew
up wanting to play cricket for
Canterbury but now has the
chance to push for playing
time with his place of birth, the
United States.
The 23-year-old Old Boys
Collegians opener was born in
Charlotte, North Carolina, before
his family returned to live
in Christchurch when he was a
toddler.
The past two seasons he has
been the second top run-scorer
in Christchurch club cricket
and cracked the Canterbury
A team where he made 90 on
debut against Auckland A.
Last week, the former
Christchurch Boys’ High School
standout travelled to Fort Lauderdale,
Florida, to try to make
the US team.
Wakefield said his rapid
form progression could be put
down to him “backing himself”
and enhancing his skills with
overseas stints in Adelaide and
Hampshire, United Kingdom,
over the past three or four
seasons.
Wakefield worked on his
technique while at the Darren
Lehmann Academy in Adelaide.
“Over there made me work
RUN MACHINE: David Wakefield is keeping his dream of
playing cricket for Canterbury alive while also chasing a
national call-up for the United States team.
on my technique and value my
wicket. Conditions are very
batter-friendly and it made me
work on my pre-ball routines
and the process that goes into
scoring runs.”
Wakefield said playing in
the Southern Premier League
in Hampshire saw him play
against a high standard of players,
including Australian international
Travis Head and fellow
Cantabrian Logan van Beek.
He said juggling the desire
to one day play for Canterbury
with the new opportunity to
play for the US would be something
he continued to ponder.
“I’ve grown up all my life
wanting to play for Canterbury
but this opportunity is very
exciting.” Wakefield scored
two half centuries in three
selection games for the team
last week.
A 30-man squad will be
named for a June training camp
in Houston.
Wakefield said the prospect
of playing in the US team in the
West Indies domestic competition
is appealing, plus playing
for promotion from the ICC tier
three championship to tier two
is enticing.
For now he has to juggle his
cricket ambitions with his law
and commerce degree.
Moulai on track to world champs
• By Jacob Page
MIDDLE-DISTANCE runner
Nick Moulai has run himself
into a promising future.
The 18-year-old former St
Bede’s College student is on
the cusp of running for New
Zealand in the 1500m at the
junior world championships
in Finland, and will then take
up a four-year scholarship at
Mississippi State University in
the United States.
Moulai has made the
qualifying time for Finland but
so have Isaiah Priddey, Samule
Tanner and Theo Quax, son of
former middle-distance great,
Dick Quax.
With only two places up
for grabs, Moulai will have to
earn his spot with fast times
in a couple of prelude races in
Europe.
“There’s a lot of quality
runners at the moment, which is
exciting, but I just have to focus
on my preparation and hope that
goes well.”
“Life is pretty busy but it’s
about managing my time, my
training on the roads, and my
rest and recovery,” Moulai said.
The former surf lifesaver and
sprinter came to middle-distance
running six years ago, and
has been coached by Graeme
Christey ever since.
Their partnership will end
when Moulai takes up his
scholarship in the US.
for a training run with Kiwi
Olympic silver medallist Nick
Willis, who took time to share
some advice,
“Nick said every runner is
working hard and putting the
training in, but it’s more about
the little two per cent things
you do that can turn you from a
good runner to a great runner,”
Moulai said.
“Things like getting nine hours
of sleep, doing your stretches,
and prioritising recovery all
make a big difference.”
Moulai said he was eager
to test himself in the US at an
NCAA division one school.
“The quality of runners over
there is incredible,” he said.
“There are 10 guys running
between 3min 36sec and 3min
44sec so it’ll be great to be
around that culture.”
Burnside High golfer to take on world’s best
• By Gordon Findlater
BURNSIDE High’s Juliana
Hung will tee off with the New
Zealand team at the junior
golf World Cup in Japan next
month.
Hung (Russley) will join
Tom Parker (Christchurch)
and Hiroki Miya (Russley)
in the seven-strong team,
alongside Aucklanders
Carmen Lim and Rose Zheng,
Kevin Koong from North
Harbour and Shaun Campbell
from Bay of Plenty.
The selection comes on
the back of what has been
a remarkably successful
12 months for the three
Canterbury golfers.
Hung will look to continue
a strong run of results in New
Zealand and abroad when
she represents the girls team.
The New Zealand stroke play
champion represented her
country last week at the Queen
Sirikit Cup – Asia-Pacific
amateur ladies golf team
championship in Thailand.
It will be Parker’s second
time competing in the
tournament. Last year he
finished 24th overall and
helped the New Zealand boys
team to finish sixth.
“It’s my favourite event I’ve
ever played in,” said Parker.
“The course layout is
awesome. It’s perfectly
SWING: Juliana Hung (right) will join Tom Parker and Hiroki Miya in the New Zealand team
to tee off at the junior golf World Cup in Japan next month.
manicured, narrow with either
tree trouble or out-of-bounds
either side so you’ve got to hit it
straight.”
After finishing his final year
at Christchurch Boys’ High
School in 2017, Parker has
been able to concentrate on his
game before beginning college
at the University of Oregon
in the United States. With a
strong support unit around
him, he’s confident of a good
result in Japan.
“I feel like going back
there this time I have extra
confidence. . . . I’ve been there
before and will be doing a few
things differently this time
around,” said Parker.
He will be joined in the four
strong boys team by Miya, who
is having a year to remember
after the biggest win of his
young golfing career at the
Faldo Series Asia grand final in
Vietnam in March.
“I’m really excited. I think
we have a really strong team
and have an opportunity to do
really well,” said Miya.
The junior golf World Cup
will feature 15 men’s and nine
women’s teams.
The tournament runs from
June 10-15 at the Chukyo Golf
Club Ishino course.
Having three Christchurch
golfers named in the team is
a rare accomplishment and a
strong sign of a talented young
crop of golfers emerging in the
region.
“We are very proud of the
achievement to have Juliana,
Tom and Hiroki selected
to represent New Zealand
at the junior World Cup
event, it’s quite a remarkable
achievement,” said Canterbury
Golf development manager
Rachel Thow.
“These players have worked
hard to earn their selection
in this team and will gain
valuable international
experience amongst some of
the best junior players in the
world.”
SCHOLARSHIPS & SCHOOL OPEN DAYS
Ultimate campus taking shape
at QEII Park
Construction of the new state-of-the-art campus for
Avonside Girls’ and Shirley Boys’ High Schools is progressing
rapidly with opening on track for next year.
Sue and John.
The new campus will feature a Performing Arts Centre
with a 750-seat theatre and a 200-seat theatre, a hockey
turf, four sports fields, three indoor gymnasiums, a café,
and a large library and learning centre.
Both Avonside Girls’ Principal Sue Hume and Shirley
Boys’ High School Headmaster John Laurenson are
excited by the progress.
“There are now more than 100 workers on site – that
will peak to more than 300 in coming months. The steel
framing is up and the concrete slabs are down and we
can see now just how big this campus will be – it’s simply
wonderful,” says John Laurenson.
“You can finally see all that we have been talking about
and dreaming about taking shape. We will be onsite with
our students, staff and community making the most of all
of the fantastic new facilities before we know it.”
The campus is due to open in Term Two of 2019. It will
be the first time in New Zealand’s history that two single
sex schools will be co-located.
John Laurenson says the co-location will enable the
schools to offer students more.
“Because we’re building together, we’ve been able to
build bigger and better facilities.”
Sue Hume says the co-location will also enable better
educational opportunities.
“We’ll collaborate on teaching some senior subjects,
so we can offer students wider choice and there’s also
the opportunity to work together on co-curricular
opportunities – such as productions, sports competitions
and the like.”
Both principals are keen to point out that the colocation
is not a merger.
“We’ll still be Shirley and they’ll still be Avonside. We’ll
work together, but both schools will retain their own
culture, identity, staff and uniform. This is not a co-ed
school,” says John Laurenson.
“Research shows that single sex education benefits
both boys and girls,” says Sue Hume. “Boys perform
better academically and girls participate more. This new
campus, has been designed so that students will still
spend most of their time in a single sex environment.”
Both Sue and John say the campus will be an asset the
east of Christchurch will be proud of.
“We’ll be right alongside the new QE2 Sport and
Recreation Centre, the School of Gymnastics and have a
satellite unit for Ferndale School onsite. It’s going to be a
great place to learn.”
AVONSIDE GIRLS’
HIGH SCHOOL
OPEN EVENING
Thursday 24 May 2018 from 5.00pm – 7.00pm
The evening begins in the gymnasium at 5.00pm, with an
address from the Principal Mrs Sue Hume, and student
representatives. A tour of the school follows, with the
opportunity to talk to teachers and students.
We look forward to welcoming all prospective students and
families for 2019.
HEALTH & AWARENESS
NOR’WEST NEWS
Headache & Migraine
can be treated
Scm
The crosses are the area of the
muscle spasms (triggerpoints).
The red areas is where the
pain is felt.
Temporalis
muscle
Neck muscle that causes headaches, earaches and facial pain.
Most headaches and migraines are
caused by an accumulation of
factors. Factors like the condition
of your spine, neck, jaw and face muscles,
but also posture, breathing pattern and
your ability to manage stress. Once the
threshold is reached, you will suffer a
headache. Research shows in most cases,
the neck plays a significant role (Dwyer
et al. 1990). Migraine sufferers who react
well to migraine medication have excellent
results when treated for neck dysfunction
(Pavese et al. 1994).
Our physiotherapists have extensive
experience in treating headaches and
can quickly determine what treatment is
needed. This often leads to a significant
decrease in both the intensity and
frequency of your headaches.
As physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk
explains, when our muscles tighten this
can refer pain to many of the areas around
the face and head. Dehydration can be the
catalyst for tightening the neck muscle
(SCM), which causes pain in the ear,
forehead and around the eye and jaw-joint
areas. Tightening of the temporalis muscle
can refer pain to the teeth, which can be
confusing when you visit the dentist to
have it checked and the dentist can’t find a
reason for the recurring pain.
Teeth grinding at night and teeth
clenching during the day are also a major
cause of muscle tightening.
Physiotherapy treatment for these
problems is based on deactivating the
‘trigger points’ through hands-on massage
therapy to relax the muscles, which is the
least invasive and a very effective form
of treatment. Dry needling is another
technique used for muscle relaxation, and
can be used with the client’s consent, Ietje
says.
Immediate relief is achieved by releasing
your tight muscles. At the same time we
work on the cause of the problem. For
example, a “feedback” headband can be
provided to be worn at night to help you
The muscle that causes headaches and toothaches.
learn not to clench your teeth while asleep.
Sometimes we need to work on the neck
part of your spine, where overuse or stress
can cause muscles to tighten, creating pain:’
Teaching self-management of stress can
also be an important aspect of the total
treatment, as well as teaching breathing
techniques, which go hand in hand with
managing stress.
Our qualified physiotherapists specialise
in dealing with chronic pain, such as
headaches, earache, toothache, and facial
and jaw pain. ………………...We can help
FOCUS ON HEALTH
Supporting Your
Bowel & Digestive
Function Helps
Prevent Disease
It is most important to keep the whole
digestive & elimination systems of the
body working efficiently. Otherwise toxins
that have not been eliminated set the stage
for disease. Many diseases have been linked
with micro-organisms (virus) or a bacterial
component. Generally these microorganisms
or bacteria can only survive
due to the fact that the environment they
are in is suitable for their survival. Non
eliminated toxins are probably one of the
main causative factors for their survival.
We know that when the digestive system
& bowel function are poor we have many
more health problems. These include
arthritis, digestive problems like reflux &
stomach pain, bladder infections, chronic
skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis &
rashes, poor eyesight, pain & inflammation,
tumors & a weakened immune system just
to name a few.
Nature’s Sunshine LBS II contains a
highly effective blend of natural herbs to
support the whole digestive system & it is
especially effective at cleansing the lower
bowel & intestinal tract. It is commonly
used for arthritis, constipation, diarrhea,
digestive problems, dry stool, fever, colds &
influenza, flatulence, gallstones, gout, skin
conditions like eczema & psoriasis, urinary
infections, liver dysfunction, Candida,
weakened immune function & for people
who want to keep their health as good as
possible.
The herbs in LBS II help stimulate the
production of digestive fluids & bile for
efficient digestion. This alone may help
prevent many diseases as a properly working
digestive system will itself neutralise many
disease causing organisms before they
have a chance to cause any problems. LBS
II also stimulates peristaltic action of the
colon effectively cleansing the colon of any
accumulated build-ups of waste material. It
also relaxes abdominal cramping & spasms,
enhances liver function, purifies the blood,
neutralizes acidic conditions, helps destroy
intestinal parasites & worms, & fights
infection.
Keeping your digestive system & bowels
functioning efficiently is definitely &
important step in obtaining & maintaining
good long term health.
deficient in B12
Emerging research has shown as many as 50% of older adults
& as many as 25% of younger adults are deficient in vitamin B12.
Scientists at Rush University Medical Center found those most
deficient in vitamin B12 to have the smallest brain mass & the lowest
scores on tests measuring short-term memory, concentration &
brain performance. Another study showed that older people with
higher levels of B12 in their blood have bigger, healthier brains &
score higher on cognitive tests than those with lower levels. Yet
another recent landmark study showed that B12 supplementation
slows the accelerated rate of brain shrinkage & declining cognitive
function. B12 is essential for energy production, cell health,
regulation of mood & sleep cycles, nerve health & repair, &
prevention of homocysteine a serious cardiovascular risk factor
that is known to cause damage & plaque in the blood vessels. It can
also increase the chances of a stroke. Harvard researchers found a
34% decrease risk of vision loss in a study of participants aged 40+
who supplemented with B12. Another study linked a higher risk
of hearing loss in subjects in their 60’s who were low in B12.
The reason so many people lack B12 appears to be our body’s
ability to absorb it declining with age as the digestive system
becomes less efficient. Anti-reflux medication & other drugs
further reduce B12 absorption. The good news is B12 in
the form of Methylcobalamin
sublingual tablets that are
dissolved in the
mouth & thru
bypassing the
digestive tract have
been shown to
effectively raise B12
levels in the body.
HOME & HEATING
Choosing the right heat
pump for your home
Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit,
most homes include at least one heat pump,
if not a whole heating solution. They can
provide cheap, clean heat and are much more
convenient than a log burner as you just need
to press a button. But how do you decide what
is best? Choosing the right sized heat pump is
key to ensuring optimum comfort levels. Every
situation varies and it is therefore important
to get professional advice from heat pump
experts.
The range varies from wall mounted high
walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems,
ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted
central heating systems allowing you to have a
very discreet way of heating your whole home
to a constant temperature throughout.
Firstly, you must select a heat pump that
is suitable for the size of the space you wish
to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to
ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area
taken into consideration but also, insulation,
building orientation, windows and ceiling
space. There are a wide range of heat pumps
available with different heating outputs so it
is important to select the correct size for your
requirements that will handle the job but not
be unnecessarily overpowered.
Secondly, the location of your heat pump
is also extremely important. The cheapest
installation is a back to back where the outdoor
unit is positioned directly behind the indoor
unit however this is not necessarily always the
best option. It is vital that the indoor unit is
positioned in a place that will not be constantly
blowing on you. Also important, is the location
of the outdoor unit. Most people do not want
their outdoor unit sitting directly in their
outdoor entertaining area or right outside their
bedroom window.
Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands
have come and gone over the years but there
are a number of manufacturers who provide
reputable and reliable products. All brands vary
in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems
and price, so it depends on your application as
to which will be most suitable. Major brands
such as Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin,
Toshiba and Hitachi are all reliable brands
backed up by good technical after sales service.
Ensure your heat pump is installed by an
accredited installer. This will not only ensure
correct installation of your heat pump, but also
validate the manufacturers warranty.
Other things to consider when choosing a
heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the
remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi
capabilities.
Heating is a major investment in your home
and it is vital to get the right advice.
Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply,
installation and servicing of all major brands
of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers
ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as
to which system will suit your application
the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no
obligation quote and will come to your home
to see what is required.
Get rid of
dampness
in your house
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm and
healthy for their families throughout winter.
Rising damp is an issue that affects many of
our older properties which suffer from poor, or
no, insulation. In Canterbury especially, postquake,
many people have relocated to homes
that suffer from rising damp which can be
associated with health problems. Independent
tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can
rise from the ground and enter a house every
day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation
and musty smells. Moulds can produce
various allergic reactions and the
frail, elderly and very young are
especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd
is a locally owned and operated
firm. The team understands the
problems caused by rising damp
and are there to help. They will
come to your damp home and
pump a lightweight, flowable
foam concrete under your
timber floored home. Specially
NOR’WEST NEWS
adapted for our New Zealand conditions and
applications it provides a layer of protection
against rising moisture. An unexpected
benefit that the team at Canterbury Foam
Concrete have noticed recently, is that many
owners of properties which had underfloor
foam concrete installed, reported that it also
provided protection against liquefaction after
the earthquakes.
Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd
now for your free, no obligation quote and
complimentary appraisal of your underfloor
ventilation needs. Phone 03 376 4608 or
HOME & HEATING
Fresh air
in your home
All houses require air exchange in order
to stay fresh and dry. No one likes to live
in a stuffy, smelly, damp home. Indoor air
quality is important for the health of the
occupants. Houses can have many sources of
contaminants, such as bathrooms, kitchens,
pets, smokers, and even furnishings. Opening
the windows can refresh the air, but is not
always an option for security reasons and can
also lead to heat energy being lost to outside.
Although older houses have small gaps
around windows and doors, you want to be
able to control the flow of air. You don’t want
air coming in to the bathroom or kitchen and
pushing the soiled air around the house. It
is better to expel the air out of kitchens and
bathrooms to outside. This will draw air in
from the rest of the house to replace the air that
has been removed.
Modern houses are very airtight and
theoretically require a source of incoming air
to allow kitchen and bathroom extraction to
work optimally. Ventilation systems should be
low air velocity and low air pressure so as not
to cause draughts.
There are two main types of ventilation
system: Positive pressure and Balanced
pressure. Positive pressure systems, such as the
Dry-Matic, bring filtered, warmed attic air into
the house, which then percolates through the
rooms, pushing the damper stale air out.
Balanced pressure systems bring in a
similar amount of air to the amount they
exhaust. Balanced pressure systems with
Heat Exchange, such as the HEX390, use the
heat of the outgoing air to warm the incoming
air from outside. These are the most energy
efficient systems available, as they recover up
to 80% of the energy in the air, rather than
losing it to outside. Heat exchangers work just
as well cooling incoming air when the house is
cooled in summer.
The NZ building code has recommended
air exchange rates for houses. To ascertain
the required airflow for your home, please
contact Smooth-Air on 0800 SMOOTH
(0800 766 684), who will also be able to
recommend a solution if your ventilation
doesn’t yet meet the New Zealand standard.
