‘All Blacks of singing’<br />

win 11th national<br />

Sweet Adelines title<br />

WINNING IS now second<br />

nature for the Christchurch<br />

City Chorus, which took home<br />

the national Sweet Adelines<br />

competition title for the 11th<br />

time.<br />

The group has finished first<br />

in every national barbershop<br />

competition it has entered since<br />

forming in 1987, and has been<br />

referred to as the “All Blacks of<br />

singing.”<br />

Singing under the direction<br />

of musical director Virginia<br />

Humphrey-Taylor, the team is<br />

made up of 130 women, mainly<br />

from Christchurch.<br />

In the competition held earlier<br />

this month, contestants were<br />

assessed by four international<br />

judges from the United States<br />

and Sweden.<br />

Said Ms Humphrey-Taylor:<br />

“The judges were excited to see<br />

a performance of such a high<br />

international level. The beautiful<br />

singing and the high energy field<br />

that was delivered was thoroughly<br />

enjoyed.”<br />

As the national champion,<br />

the group will represent New<br />

Zealand at the Sweet Adelines<br />

international competition in<br />

New Orleans next year.<br />

THE HIGHLAND Dance<br />

Company of New Zealand has<br />

performed an Anzac-themed<br />

item for audiences of more than<br />

8000 at a festival in the United<br />

States.<br />

The majority of the dancers<br />

are aged 12-24 and attend St<br />

Andrew’s College, Rangi Ruru<br />

Girls’ School, St Margaret’s<br />

College and Burnside High<br />

School.<br />

Led by directors Julie Hawke,<br />

of Papanui, and Blenheim’s<br />

Robyn Simmons, the group of<br />

32 dancers performed the piece<br />

to open every night of the fourday<br />

<strong>2018</strong> Virginia International<br />

Tattoo show in the city of<br />

fall in<br />

30 YEARS<br />

Norfolk, Virginia. Organised<br />

by the Virginia Arts Festival,<br />

the tattoo is for massed bands,<br />

choirs and performers.<br />

“Norfolk is a very navy-based<br />

city which honours the service<br />

of US marines, navy and the<br />

army . . . the theme this year was<br />

‘above and beyond the call of<br />

duty – honouring, remembering<br />

and celebrating medal of honour<br />

recipients’,” said Mrs Hawke.<br />

The Anzac piece Here’s to<br />

Heroes opened the show and<br />

another piece Swing of the Kilt<br />

was performed in the second<br />

half of the show.<br />

The opening performance<br />

included poppies as props and<br />

accompanying the dancers was<br />

a solo singer, a choir and a brass<br />

wonderful compliments from<br />

the show’s director, who was<br />

most impressed . . . it was a<br />

very moving item,” said Mrs<br />

Hawke.<br />

Both directors developed the<br />

Anzac theme last year before<br />

presenting it at the dance<br />

academy’s annual conference<br />

and sending a video clip to<br />

festival organisers who then<br />

offered an invitation.<br />

Dancers then auditioned and<br />

“intensive workshops” began<br />

early this year, said Mrs Hawke.<br />

While in the US, the group<br />

visit New York City and<br />

Washington DC and did a<br />

‘highland fling’ in front of the<br />

White House.<br />
