School decision fuels debate
• By Sarla Donovan
THE ARM-WRESTLE over a
new site for Redcliffs School has
heated up again.
Greater Christchurch Regeneration
Minister Megan Woods
has given approval for changes
to the District Plan, allowing the
school to be built on Redcliffs
Park.
Friends of
Redcliffs Park
spokesman
Chris Doudney
said the minister
had got it
wrong.
“I suspect the
Kate
McClelland
Darren
Fidler
information
she was given
was limited and
she would have
been limited
as to what she
could base her
decision on.
Very much the
same as the
community
board hearing
last August
where our own submission
couldn’t be received or discussed
because the scope of the
argument was limited to considering
the school on the park.”
He said they wanted to get
more information about the
basis for the minister’s decision.
For seven years the school has
been operating from the Van
Asch campus in Sumner, after
earthquake-generated rockfall
at its former site.
In March 2015 the Government
proposed the school’s closure
but following community
outcry, it agreed in June 2016 to
return the school to Redcliffs –
provided it be established on a
different site.
Deputy principal Kate Mc-
Clelland was “thrilled” the
school will be rebuilt at Redcliffs
Park.
Said Ms McClelland: “After
seven years we’re very excited to
be finally able to return to our
home in Redcliffs. After all the
work that’s been done working
towards this day, we’re thrilled.”
Families and pupils were
notified yesterday morning,
shortly after the decision was
announced.
Board of trustees chairman
Darren Fidler was “happy and
relieved” at the news.
“We can finally get back. It’s
been a long seven years.”
He said it had been an open
and transparent process.
“The minister put out all the
information that she used to
inform her decision so the due
process has been followed . . .
we’re looking forward to getting
back to the core business of
educating kids. That’s all we’ve
ever wanted to do and this has
been a massive distraction from
that.”
Planting day
planned
for reserve
A PUBLIC planting and gala day
at Charlesworth Reserve will help
establish native trees and shrubs
in the area.
The reserve is being gradually
developed to re-establish estuaryedge
ecosystem features like saltmeadow,
salt-marsh and coastal
bush.
At present these are either very
rare around the estuary or nonexistent.
Work thus far has included
planting of coastal bush,
installation of culverts to allow
tidal flows to enter the reserve,
development of walking tracks
and bridges, a predator trapping
programme and installation of
new signage.
Support for the project has
come from Trees for Canterbury,
the city council and the Avon-
Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust.
The event is scheduled for this
Sunday, 10am-noon at Charlesworth
St Reserve, situated on
Charlesworth St off Ferry Rd.
