In 1957, the Douglas Fir Plywood Association mailed a challenge to area boat designers and boatbuilders: Build a plywood
sailboat that could race and cruise, sleep four, be built by reasonably skilled amateurs, be powered by an outboard engine,
and outperform other sailboats. Ben Seaborn, a notable yacht designer of the period, took on the challenge, along with Ed
Hoppen and Eddon Boat Company employees Herb Schuey and Phil Manley. Together, they worked through the details during
the construction of the first. Thunderbirds No. 2 and No. 3 — Pirouette and Windsong — built simultaneously at Eddon Boat
Company can be viewed as the true prototype T-Birds as some details were modified for subsequent boats. Those two boats
defined the building plans that were used by homebuilders. Today, there are more than 1,000 Thunderbirds worldwide with fleets
in Australia and the United States. The original Thunderbird is at the Harbor History Museum. Pirouette was purchased by the
Gig Harbor BoatShop and lovingly restored at the Eddon Boatyard by talented volunteers. It is used for the Community Sailing
Program at the BoatShop. Photograph by Chance Busey. Photo taken at the LeMans Regatta on Nov. 16, 2017.
