Fox Island<br />

Historical Society<br />

and Museum<br />

There are more than 3,000 artifacts<br />

on display in dioramas, showcases<br />

and free-standing exhibits at<br />

the Fox Island Museum. Among<br />

them is a display describing the<br />

life of former Gov. Dixy Lee Ray,<br />

the largest collection of pulley<br />

blocks in the state, Indian artifacts<br />

and several antique gasoline<br />

engines in working order. Visit the<br />

museum to see a topographic relief<br />

map showing ports of call and<br />

shipwrecks. In May 2015, the Fox<br />

Island Historical Society received<br />

notification that the 1908 log<br />

cabin, originally owned by the Lila<br />

Acheson family (later married to<br />

DeWitt Wallace and co-founder of<br />

The Reader’s Digest) was accepted<br />

to the <strong>Wash</strong>ington State Historic<br />

Registry.<br />

<strong>Harbor</strong> History Museum<br />

The museum offers 7,000 square feet of permanent galleries<br />

showcasing the rich heritage of the <strong>Gig</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> peninsula. Unique<br />

artifacts, video kiosks, hands-on exhibits and a small theater bring<br />

peninsula history to life in our permanent galleries.<br />

Shenandoah<br />

The 65-foot Shenandoah is a <strong>Gig</strong><br />

<strong>Harbor</strong>-based purse seiner built by<br />

Skansie Shipbuilding Company in<br />

the winter of 1925. She was built<br />

for Pasco Dorotich, a pioneer<br />

<strong>Gig</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> fishing boat owner<br />

and skipper. She was originally<br />

powered by a 65 horsepowered<br />

Atlas Imperial diesel,<br />

an advanced conception of<br />

marine power for fishing vessels<br />

in 1925. The Shenandoah was<br />

operated almost exclusively at<br />

the Salmon Banks in the San Juan<br />

Islands but she also made several<br />

trips to Alaska in her early days.<br />

<strong>Harbor</strong> History Museum and the <strong>Gig</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> branch of the Pierce<br />

County Library invite the community to join the <strong>Gig</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> Literary<br />

Society, dedicated to exploring the literary world of historical<br />

fiction, nonfiction, and other works of interest.<br />

Humanities in the <strong>Harbor</strong><br />

A monthly lecture series that explores unique and engaging topics<br />

for the <strong>Gig</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> community.<br />

Hours: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesdays- Saturdays; Noon - 5 p.m.<br />

Sundays; closed Mondays<br />

Holidays: The museum is closed New Years Day, Easter,<br />

Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Dec. 26.<br />

Thanks to support from the City of <strong>Gig</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong>, <strong>Harbor</strong> History<br />

Museum admission will be FREE for all general public visitors<br />

through <strong>2018</strong>.<br />
