Strasbourg Guide Basic Camp
A back yard overnite campout
On May 4, 2018 the 1st Strasbourg Guide held a camp in one of our leader back
yard. As the girls arrived, we made supper, which was Kababs and cheesy potatoes
with coleslaw. Before we started cooking we learned about fire safety and different
way to make a fire. After we did our dishes, we learned about the seven principles
of hiking and camping, to keep our wildlife safe and our forests clean and beautiful.
This set of rules is known as the Leave No Trace Principle. We also talked about
how to stay warm sleeping when it is cold, as we were going to be sleeping outside
with temperature in the single digits. While cooking over the fire, we made homemade
ice cream for dessert. After clean-up, we all settled down for sleep and listened
to the sounds of the night.
Our day begin at 8:00 am, we had Bonnie’s muffins for breakfast, and then learned
how to handle a axe, make a woodpile, care for a camp stove, and about camp fires.
In the afternoon, we made a few hat trader, planned our campfire for later that
night, went for a hike, and practiced setting up a small tent and taking it down. For
supper, we had a dish call ‘Cook-out’ …boy was that good! Later, we sat down and
talked about Safety Precautions when camping. It was finally time for us to have our
Campfire, and we each took turn leading a song. Next was a surprise for ‘mug-up’, we
prepared S’mores Egg Rolls! To end the evening we did some star-gazing … what a
beautiful way to end a the day! In the morning we had our Guide Own ceremony to
end our Camp!
Shoreline
clean up
On Sunday May 6th, 2018, I invited
the Guides, Pathfinder and Ranger and
family members to get together and
clean up the shore line at Last Mountain
Regional Park. This was a requirement
for my Community Service Pin which I
need for my Canada Cord. I have been
working on my Canada Cord for two
years, and next year I hope to finish up
the last of my requirements that I need
to receive my Award!
This year as we cleaned up the Shoreline,
we found a lot of trash along with
many other interesting items. We found
The Cleaning Crew. Standing: Karisa Gorril, Bonnie Pratchler,
Sheyanne Gorrill. Kneeling: MacKenzie Craven, Eabha-Mai Daly;
Amber Craven, Brianna Yung.
shoes, several broken pieces of taillight, shingle pieces, tin sheets, insulation, 14 plastic bags, 38 pieces of
food wrapper, and 56 tiny pieces of plastic. We collected over 70 lbs of trash in all. Cleaning up the shoreline
was good as this stuff will not be in the food chain. We all need to do our part by not leaving this stuff
in nature so it does no harm to the wildlife and nature. By me leading a small group of Girl Guides on the
clean up, I hope I make a difference where I live!
