16 | Operational Units Tutoring and Instructional Services Tutoring and Instructional Services are provided by trained undergraduate and graduate tutors. Tutoring is offered in most beginning and a few advanced courses in subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, psychology, economics, political science, and select foreign languages. Students can also participate in study skills workshops covering topics such as time management, study strategies, note-taking, and test-taking strategy. Other undergraduate students may request services as space allows. Services are provided via appointment, workshop/small groups, or drop-in basis. For more information, call 217-333-7547. Other Initiatives to Enhance the Illinois Experience NEW Ambassadors Program Each spring, approximately 15 students are selected to serve as Ambassadors. Ambassadors interact with fellow students, alumni, faculty, staff, administrators and community leaders. The experience will afford students the opportunity to gain leadership skills; to develop a greater understanding of the department; to gain experience in event planning; to network with the campus and alumni community; to build lifetime relationships; to receive mentoring from the Director; to enhance résumés; and to have fun. Academic Resources for Success Seminar First-year underrepresented, EOP, PAP, and other targeted students and their parents are invited to an academic presentation on the Friday after move-in day. The seminar is an opportunity to inspire students, for the students to meet staff, to meet assigned Graduate Mentors, and to receive information on the services designed to promote retention, persistence, and timely graduation. Advising Student Organizations OMSA sponsors two registered student organizations, the Minority Association for Future Attorneys and the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students, to develop leadership qualities and prepare students for careers in law and medicine. For more information, contact 217-333-0054. Annual Mom’s Day Scholastic Awards Ceremony This event celebrates the academic accomplishments of underrepresented, PAP, and EOP students. Volunteer, Employment, Internship, and Practicum Opportunities The department offers undergraduate and graduate students volunteer, employment, internship, and practicum opportunities to enhance their personal, academic, and professional portfolios. Fall Multicultural Congratulatory Ceremony Each year, mid-year candidates for graduation are offered the opportunity to invite family and friends and participate in the Multicultural Congratulatory. This event is held on the Saturday evening following fi nal exams. Students wear caps and gowns, hear their names called, have photos taken, and receive diploma covers. Study Abroad The department is committed to partnering with the Study Abroad and other offi ces to identify resources and opportunities that enable underrepresented, EOP, and PAP students to study abroad. For more information, contact 217-333-0054. Scholarship Giving Opportunity The Reginald and Frances Hayes H.O.P.E. Scholarship The H.O.P.E. Scholarship was created in 2000 by two-time alumna Jacquelyn Hayes in honor of her parents. Scholarships are typically awarded to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and transfer students who participate in services. The award is presented at the annual Mom’s Day Ceremony.
