Young, hungry and eager to prove themselves. The former Christ’s College pupil, who is based in Fendalton, is still coming to terms with his starting role for the franchise. The Rams had two wins over the weekend against the Nelson Giants, 104- Mark Dickel 90, and Super City Rangers, 98-83, putting them at the top of the table with four wins and one loss “It was quite a shock to find out that I’d have this role,” Darling said. “I was expecting 10-15min a game but this has been something new.” The talented 18-year-old transferred from Nelson College to Christ’s for his final year of secondary school in 2017. He praised Rams coach Mark Dickel as being the main reason for the move. “He’s had a big impact on me and still does obviously.” Darling’s role as a 192cm forward is to rebound and protect the basket. That’s no small task considering the vast experience other teams have with former Tall Blacks’ Alex Pledger and Dillon Boucher just two names matched-up against Darling. “Going up against Alex Pledger like I did last week made me nervous when I thought about it, but once you get into the game, you’re often BIG MAN: Canterbury Rams teenager Max Darling is proving to be a sensation for the youthful team. too focussed to think about it,” Darling said. The Rams are in the hunt for the top four and Darling says that is the goal. “We are a young team but we all get on great,” he said. “To make the play-offs would be a great effort.” Darling is eager to test his talents offshore and said there was interest in him from colleges in the United States which are looking to get him to commit to a scholarship, although nothing has been confirmed. The Rams return home to Cowles Stadium to play the Taranaki Mountain Airs on Saturday. PAPANUI softballer Jackson Watt has had a breakthrough year. The 20-year-old former Christchurch Boys’ High pupil has plenty to celebrate having been selected to make his Black Sox debut later this year and being named Canterbury men’s softball player of the year. Watt has been in the sport since he started playing teeball at the age of four, and has played all of his games for Papanui. The right-fielder, who bats clean-up, has been at the top of the home run and runs batted in statistics but chose to deflect praise onto his teammates. “Hitting home runs is always great but you want to be productive at the plate and it’s a credit to the guys in front of me in the line up for getting on base and, fortunately, I’ve had a few good swings and been able to score them,” he said. Watt also pitches occasionally for his club team and is motivated to ensure he gives back to a sport which has given him so much. “I’ve been part of a great club and Canterbury Softball has invested a lot in me, so I want to make sure I make the most of every opportunity.” Watt, who also plays premier softball with his brother Nathan, says to be selected for the Black Sox is a real thrill. NOR’WEST NEWS Up-and-coming Papanui slugger makes Black Sox IMPACT: Jackson Watt will make his Black Sox debut later this year. “To be part of a team which has such a big legacy and to play with some of the experienced legends.” The Black Sox, currently ranked No 1 in the world, will play Japan (2), Argentina (3), United States (6), Czech Republic (7), Denmark (11) and Botswana (12) in the five-day Intercontinental Cup series in Prague from August 28 to September 1. •More sport, page 11
