Research the Scientist and summarize their contributions to the Atomic Theory
You must have 2 to 3 complete sentences for each Scientist
Antoine Henri Becquerel
He discovered the idea of radioactivity in atoms. He had found some visible radiation around some uranium and
thats how he made his discovery.
Niels Bohr
He created a new model for the atom that was improved later on to become the model we use nowadays. His model
suggested that electrons follow a specific orbit around the nucleus which was later proved to be untrue.
Louis de Barogilie
He developed the theory that electrons can act both as particles and waves. His theory was named the wave mechanics
theory.
Glenn Seaborg
He helped to identify 8 new elements, one of which was named after him. He also made discoveries in transuranium
elements.
Hantaro Nagaoka
He proposed the planetary model of the atom. This model displayed a massive atomic center with the electrons revolving
around it much like the way planets revolve around the sun.
Democritus
Democritus was the first person to come up with the basic idea of an atom and he suggested there were many types of
atoms. He suggested that everything was made up of these tiny particles (atoms).
Marie and Pierre Curie
The couple discovered radation and that the amount of radiation depends on the amount of the element. They first
discovered this working with elements such as Thorium.
Eugene Goldstein
He discovered rays that were present with electrons but they went in the opposite direction of the positive charge. He named
these rays "canal rays".
Dmitri Mendeleev
He was the man who introduced the metric measurement system in Russia. Mendeleev also created the periodic
table of elements that we use today, which helps alot when working with elements and atoms.
J.J. Thomson
He created a model of the atom that stated that electrons lied inside the nucleaus of the atom. This model was named the
pudding atomic model and was later proven to be inaccurate.
James Chadwick
James Chadwick recognized that there are neutral particles within the atom. This new discovery changed the understanding
we had on atomic structure.
Erwin Shrodinger
Erwin came up with the electron cloud model. The model stated that electrons are found within the electron cloud and
their path can not be predicted accurately.
John Dalton
Dalton proved the idea that elements are made up of atoms. Although his ideas were similar to those of Democritus, unlike
him Dalton's ideas were excepted.
Lothar Meyer
He classified the elements in the periodic table of elements. He did this by ordering the elements by atomic weight.
Robert Millikan
He discovered that electrons had a negative charge. This discovery helped to lead to the identification of the mass of an
electron.
J.W. Dobereiner
Similar to Meyer, he grouped the elements in the periodic table together. He had found trends in atomic mass and grouped
the similar elements together.
Ernest Rutherford
Rutherford was the first to discover the existance of atoms. By studying how x rays pass through objects he discovered
them
