Slate <strong>Belt</strong> Heritage Center <strong>2018</strong> Preservation Awards<br />
<strong>The</strong> Slate <strong>Belt</strong> Heritage Center is pleased to announce the<br />
recipients of their <strong>2018</strong> Preservation Awards in the following<br />
categories:<br />
<strong>The</strong> Architectural Award is presented to an individual who has<br />
performed an exemplary act in saving<br />
or conserving a historic building, place<br />
or artifact where restoration is authentic<br />
to preservation. This years’ award<br />
will be presented to Mr. & Mrs. Peter<br />
Marmaras. <strong>The</strong>y have both undertaken<br />
the task to reface the original Miller<br />
House, circa 1752, one of the original<br />
deeds for the founding of Plainfield<br />
Township in 1760. <strong>The</strong>y added two<br />
completely historic additions in 1997 and<br />
late in 2004. A parlor garden, added on<br />
the east side of the house, was done in<br />
Peter Marmaras<br />
original, Pennsylvania German “four square” design.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Initiative Award is presented to<br />
an individual who has shown exemplary<br />
actions in promoting and preserving Slate<br />
<strong>Belt</strong> heritage through in-kind actions.<br />
This will be presented to Mrs. Deanna<br />
Ruzanski. Mrs. Ruzanski was instrumental<br />
in the writing the book, A Great Miracle<br />
Happened Here, a story of the Jewish<br />
influence in the Slate <strong>Belt</strong>. She was also<br />
a formidable figure in the publishing of<br />
the book, Letters to Homefront, A Love<br />
Story Between a Community and its WW II<br />
Deanna Ruzanski<br />
Soldiers.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Special Focus Award is presented<br />
to an individual who has shown exemplary actions in saving<br />
or conserving traditions or a body<br />
of knowledge. That individual who<br />
contributes to educational information<br />
via documentation. This award will be<br />
presented to Mr. Walter Emery. Mr.<br />
Emery has presented many programs<br />
containing his extensive collection of<br />
post cards depicting sites throughout<br />
the Slate <strong>Belt</strong>. Also, his compilation of<br />
information and photographs of former<br />
one-room schoolhouses also serves to<br />
preserve history for future generations.<br />
Additionally, as chairman of the Portland<br />
Walter Emery<br />
centennial Committee, he was prominent in assisting the purchase of<br />
the Mt. Bethel Church which was then established as the Slate <strong>Belt</strong><br />
Museum.<br />
For their efforts in these acts, the Slate <strong>Belt</strong> Heritage Center will<br />
be honoring them at a public ceremony on Thursday, June 21st at<br />
7:00 pm at the Center located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, Pa. For<br />

Slate <strong>Belt</strong> Heritage Center Calendar of Events for <strong>2018</strong><br />
Thursday, June 21st, 7:00pm - “Annual Preservation Awards”.<br />
Thursday, July 12th, 7:00pm - “Restoration of the Slate Hoists” – Mike Piersa<br />
will conduct an outdoor presentation of the manufacturing and operation of<br />
the restored Flory slate hoists which now reside in Bethel Park.<br />
Thursday, August, 9th, 7:00pm - “One Room Schoolhouses”- Walter Emery<br />
will be showing pictures of all the area old school houses.<br />
Thursday, September 13th, 7:00pm - “Anthracite Coal Trains in the Slate<br />
<strong>Belt</strong>”- Craig Ealey, train historian, will do a program in honor of the<br />
Anthracite Coal 250th Anniversary.<br />
Thursday, October 11, 7:00pm - “Haunted Heritage Program”.<br />
Thursday, November 8, 7:00pm - “World War I Veterans”- presented by<br />
William Casamassima.<br />
Sunday, December 9, 2:00pm - “<strong>The</strong> Great Slate <strong>Belt</strong> Trivia Contest”- MC<br />
Marc Blau hosts the trivia game for teams of four. Make your own team or<br />
just show up and join in the fun. Prizes for the winners.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Bangor Class of 1968 Seeks Class Members<br />
<strong>The</strong> Bangor High School Class of 1968 is trying to locate the<br />
