Slate Belt Heritage Center 2018 Preservation Awards
The Slate Belt Heritage Center is pleased to announce the
recipients of their 2018 Preservation Awards in the following
categories:
The Architectural Award is presented to an individual who has
performed an exemplary act in saving
or conserving a historic building, place
or artifact where restoration is authentic
to preservation. This years’ award
will be presented to Mr. & Mrs. Peter
Marmaras. They have both undertaken
the task to reface the original Miller
House, circa 1752, one of the original
deeds for the founding of Plainfield
Township in 1760. They added two
completely historic additions in 1997 and
late in 2004. A parlor garden, added on
the east side of the house, was done in
Peter Marmaras
original, Pennsylvania German “four square” design.
The Initiative Award is presented to
an individual who has shown exemplary
actions in promoting and preserving Slate
Belt heritage through in-kind actions.
This will be presented to Mrs. Deanna
Ruzanski. Mrs. Ruzanski was instrumental
in the writing the book, A Great Miracle
Happened Here, a story of the Jewish
influence in the Slate Belt. She was also
a formidable figure in the publishing of
the book, Letters to Homefront, A Love
Story Between a Community and its WW II

Soldiers.
The Special Focus Award is presented
to an individual who has shown exemplary actions in saving
or conserving traditions or a body
of knowledge. That individual who
contributes to educational information
via documentation. This award will be
presented to Mr. Walter Emery. Mr.
Emery has presented many programs
containing his extensive collection of
post cards depicting sites throughout
the Slate Belt. Also, his compilation of
information and photographs of former
one-room schoolhouses also serves to
preserve history for future generations.
Additionally, as chairman of the Portland
Walter Emery
centennial Committee, he was prominent in assisting the purchase of
the Mt. Bethel Church which was then established as the Slate Belt
Museum.
For their efforts in these acts, the Slate Belt Heritage Center will
be honoring them at a public ceremony on Thursday, June 21st at
7:00 pm at the Center located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, Pa. For

Slate Belt Heritage Center Calendar of Events for 2018
Thursday, June 21st, 7:00pm - “Annual Preservation Awards”.
Thursday, July 12th, 7:00pm - “Restoration of the Slate Hoists” – Mike Piersa
will conduct an outdoor presentation of the manufacturing and operation of
the restored Flory slate hoists which now reside in Bethel Park.
Thursday, August, 9th, 7:00pm - “One Room Schoolhouses”- Walter Emery
will be showing pictures of all the area old school houses.
Thursday, September 13th, 7:00pm - “Anthracite Coal Trains in the Slate
Belt”- Craig Ealey, train historian, will do a program in honor of the
Anthracite Coal 250th Anniversary.
Thursday, October 11, 7:00pm - “Haunted Heritage Program”.
Thursday, November 8, 7:00pm - “World War I Veterans”- presented by
William Casamassima.
Sunday, December 9, 2:00pm - “The Great Slate Belt Trivia Contest”- MC
Marc Blau hosts the trivia game for teams of four. Make your own team or
just show up and join in the fun. Prizes for the winners.

The Bangor High School Class of 1968 is trying to locate the
