Toilet paper thief nabbed
• By Emily O’Connell
IF YOU’VE been caught short
in Rolleston here’s the reason
why.
A man in his 60s has been
stealing the toilet paper.
But don’t stress, relief is in
hand – the police have caught
him.
Senior Sergeant Pete Stills
said the man travelled from his
address in Wigram to Brookside
Park Rolleston to steal the
toilet paper.
He said police issued a
formal warning after two incidents
last week where the man
stole a total of nine toilet paper
rolls.
Senior Sergeant Stills said the
man told police he needed it
because he had “diarrhoea and
a runny nose.”
Number of young
• By Julia Evans
THE NUMBER of students
cycling to school is dwindling –
with social pressures and a lack
of infrastructure to blame.
That is the finding of Avanzar
planner Jillian Frater, who
investigated the numbers
of Christchurch students
cycling to school by
gender and socioeconomic
group.
Dr Frater’s research
revealed 29 per cent of
male school students
cycle to school, while
only three per cent of
females cycle.
“Currently some groups of
people cycle much less than
others. That includes females,
FAST FACTS
•29 per cent of male
students bike to school
•While only three per
cent of female students
cycle
•About 30 per cent of
upper decile students
bike to school
•About five per cent
from lower decile
schools cycle
Jillian Frater
those from low socio-economic
areas and older adolescents,” she
said.
Dr Frater said social pressures
were the greatest influence over
whether or not young people
cycled.
“Students’ attitude to cycling
comes from what’s the
‘norm’ with others their
age and unfortunately
for most, biking isn’t
normal.”
Girls were even more
likely
to be influenced by their
friends – hence the lower
figure, she said.
“Females also miss
out because there is a lot less
of them cycling in areas which
are not particularly friendly to
cyclists.”
Dr Frater said to boost the
number of student cyclists in
Christchurch would be about
making cycling the “norm” and
ensuring the infrastructure was
there to support it.
“We have a system that is
dominated by cars, so that
has become the norm . . . and
especially for older students,
cycling isn’t a normal thing to
do,” she said.
