CASE STUDY: DUCO lTD<br />
Bus<strong>in</strong>ess: Hi-Tech Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Turnover: £60 million<br />
Based: Newcastle<br />
Discussion with: Emma MaDdison,<br />
Communications <strong>and</strong> Market<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Officer<br />
Key learn<strong>in</strong>g: Connectivity is key<br />
for UK based multi-nationals<br />
duco is part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technip group<br />
<strong>and</strong> employs <strong>of</strong> 500 people at its<br />
site <strong>in</strong> newcastle. it manufactures<br />
umbilicals for <strong>the</strong> subsea oil<br />
<strong>and</strong> gas <strong>in</strong>dustry. <strong>the</strong>se supply<br />
hydraulic control <strong>and</strong> chemicals<br />
to oil <strong>and</strong> gas wells <strong>and</strong> subsea<br />
manifolds.<br />
duco makes up part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> uK’s<br />
subsea sector, which employs<br />
about 40,000 people, half <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> scotl<strong>and</strong>. subsea is a uK<br />
success story <strong>and</strong> its exports have<br />
grown by over 50% <strong>in</strong> three years,<br />
to more than £3bn.<br />
duco flies skilled eng<strong>in</strong>eers<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternationally to work on projects,<br />
<strong>in</strong>stallations <strong>and</strong> repairs. its sales<br />
<strong>and</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess efficiency would<br />
be boosted by better <strong>and</strong> more<br />
frequent connectivity to norway.<br />
IN QUOTES:<br />
On mov<strong>in</strong>g its people:<br />
“we would get <strong>the</strong>re whatever it<br />
takes. if <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess is <strong>the</strong>re, we<br />
can’t afford to not be follow<strong>in</strong>g it<br />
<strong>and</strong> pursu<strong>in</strong>g it....if someone’s got<br />
to be <strong>the</strong>re for a meet<strong>in</strong>g – <strong>the</strong>y’ve<br />
got to be <strong>the</strong>re.”<br />
On need<strong>in</strong>g more connectivity:<br />
“norway’s quite a trek for people,<br />
it’s <strong>of</strong>ten two flights, apart from<br />
stavanger now, which i believe, is<br />
still one flight, so that makes it a<br />
lot easier. it means three days out<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice, because <strong>the</strong>y’ll take a<br />
day to get <strong>the</strong>re, <strong>the</strong> next day’s <strong>the</strong><br />
meet<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n a whole o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
day to get back”.
