Budding netballers meet their idols
KEEN NETBALLERS from
Somerfield, Amelie and Georgia
Martin got up close and personal
with team captains before an
ANZ Premiership match last
weekend.
The Te Kura Wairepo School
pupils won the opportunity to
meet the team captains and
lead the teams out onto centre
court at the start of the match
between the Northern Stars and
the Southern Steel, during Super
Sunday at Horncastle Arena.
The event saw six teams
in the competition travel to
Christchurch to play on Sunday
afternoon.
Amelie, 10, has been playing
netball for four years and hopes
to play professionally when she’s
older.
“My favourite part was getting
LIQUORLAND IS appealing a
District Licensing Committee
decision that rejected its
application to set up a new store
in Phillipstown.
Last month the committee
declined the proposal to operate
a bottle store on the corner of
Ferry and Aldwins Rds because
the area is “vulnerable” and already
badly affected by alcoholrelated
harm.
The decision came after 121
objections by health officials,
residents, police and nearby
Linwood College.
The community rallied to
stop the proposal because it
was 50m from Thirsty Liquor,
and close to several others, with
my photo taken with them. My
favourite player is Maria Folau
because she’s a really good
121 submitting to object the
proposal.
Liquorland has asked the
Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing
Authority grant it leave
to appeal, saying the original
decision was “flawed and wrong
at law.”
It said the Liquorland was
denied a fair hearing because the
Georgia Martin of Somerfield
cool to watch,” she said.
The match saw the Steel beat
the Stars by 63-61 goals and
the two girls got to meet Steel
captain Wendy Frew and Stars
captain Grace Kara.
committee had pre-determined
its position, and it failed
to regard Liquorland’s
evidence.
Steve Crotty and Michael
Scott, who also own Liquorland
Riccarton, made the application
to open the Phillipstown store.
They said it would also service
Ferrymead to Sumner.
Hill suburbs
could get
electric buses
THE COUNTRY’S first fully
electric bus service will be
plugged into Christchurch early
next year.
And if the roll-out is successful,
they could make their way to the
city’s hill suburbs.
Red Bus has purchased three
electric buses as part of its commitment
to gradually introducing
new innovative technology across
the public transport service.
The new buses, which will be
delivered by next March, will
be used on the direct service
route 29 between the CBD and
Christchurch Airport which
carries more than 200,000
passengers annually.
Red Bus chief executive Paul
McNoe said it is interested in the
potential for wider use of electric
buses and will be testing the new
buses on other routes – including
hill suburbs – once they have settled
into service.
“Based on current use of a similar
electric bus design in Sydney,
Canberra, London and China
we’ll be able to use them all day
without needing a re-charge.”
He said the buses will also
have environmental and health
benefits.
