Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a quality grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C. Matthew Ackman, of Lake Bluff, Sofia Kubicek and Connor Teske, both of Lake Forest. University of Dallas Hulseman presents psychology senior thesis Emma Hulseman, of Lake Bluff, was one of 16 University of Dallas psychology majors to present a senior thesis during the spring 2018 semester. The completion of a senior thesis is one of the final requirements of psychology majors in order to graduate. Hulseman’s thesis was titled “Coming to Terms with Disability: A Phenomenological Study of the Experience of Coming to Terms with Having a Disabled Child.” Bates College Crimmins named to dean’s list Tricia Crimmins was named to the dean’s list at Bates College for the winter semester ending in April 2018. This is a distinction earned by students whose cumulative grade point average is 3.71 or higher. Crimmins, of Lake Forest, is a 2015 graduate of Latin School of Chicago. She is majoring in politics at Bates. Marietta College George named to dean’s high honors list at Marietta College Marietta College’s Rachel George, of Lake Forest, has been named to the Spring 2018 dean’s high honors list. Any full-time Marietta College student completing at least 15 credit hours with a grade point average of 3.75 or better in a given semester is recognized as a dean’s high honors list student for that semester. George is a member of the Class of 2020 and is majoring in Finance and Accounting at Marietta. She is a graduate of Woodlands Academy. Belmont University Stride travels for summer study abroad For 700 Belmont students, including Lake Bluff native Britta Stride, preparations to pack looked a bit different as they prepared to participate in one of 43 faculty-led summer study abroad experiences across the world. Miami University Nissly Spends Semester Abroad Miami University student Jennifer Nissly, of Lake Forest, spent the winter 2018 semester in Argentina as part of a study abroad group. Nissly is majoring in Inclusive Special Education. Bucknell University Students named to dean’s list Bucknell University has released the dean’s list for outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of the 2017-18 academic year. A student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean’s list recognition. Leah Bloodgood and Lukas Munoz, both of Lake Forest. Worcester Polytechnic Institute Sacherer named to dean’s list Worcester Polytechnic Institute has announced that Lucas Sacherer, of Lake Bluff, a member of the class of 2020 majoring in computer science, was named to the university’s dean’s list for academic excellence for the spring 2018 semester. Miami University Students receive degrees at Miami University fall commencement Miami University awarded degrees to students during fall commencement exercises Friday December 15, 2017, at Millett Hall. Marietta College Ziaja part of winning Please see SCHOOL, 17 Lake Forest police donate bikes to help those in need Submitted by Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart The Lake Forest Police Department was quick to respond to Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart’s call for bicycles that can be re-used in ways that truly make a difference in people’s lives. The all-girls college preparatory high school began a used bike collection April 18, which was open through April 21. Between 9 a.m. and noon that day, bicycles of any size in repairable condition as well as gently used kids’ bikes were dropped off at the Woodlands campus, 760 E. Westleigh Road in Lake Forest. Four members of the Lake Forest Police Department got the community’s participation off to an early start April 20 by dropping off 16 bikes and two wheels from its “lostand-found.” According to Sergeant Kevin Zelk, evidence technician/property room supervisor, police officers recover items from places like the train stations, shopping areas, parks and schools as well as at the many special events held in Lake Forest throughout the year. “We keep them for at least six months, making every attempt to reunite them with their owners,” he said. “Persons missing items are encouraged to contact the police department or check the Found Property section of its Some Woodlands Academy students, faculty and staff were on hand to receive a donation of 16 bicycles from the Lake Forest Police Department April 20 as part of the school’s drive to collect bikes that can be re-used to help needy persons. Items such as bicycles not claimed after six months often are auctioned off or donated to worthy causes.” Woodlands Academy’s current effort is being done in conjunction with Working Bikes of Chicago, a nonprofit organization that gives donated bicycles new life by redistributing them as tools of empowerment in local and global communities. The bicycles collected during this drive will be refurbished by Working Bikes and then donated to its local and international partners. Locally, Working Bikes donates to individuals and partner organizations in the Chicago area, providing transportation to people in homeless transition, refugee resettlement and youth empowerment programs. The organization notes that in developing countries, a bicycle can truly change the life of an individual. In areas plagued by poverty, high levels of unemployment and lack of reliable transportation, a bicycle can help provide access to jobs, education, medical attention and other resources.
