Man, did this year fly by. In this week’s Lake Forest Leader, we covered all of the local high school graduations and each one was unique in its own way. No matter if you attended Lake Forest High School, Lake Forest Academy or Woodlands Academy, you have each accomplished incredible things. The unity you have shown this year, and throughout high school, does not go unnoticed. You have worked hard and overcome obstacles and I know, whatever is SCHOOL From Page 14 next for you, whether it is entering the military, going to college or taking a gap year, you will all do great things. While you have just closed the door on a chapter you are very familiar with and are preparing to enter a new chapter with a lot of unknowns, know the best is yet to come. You all still have so many milestones ahead of you and will accomplish incredible things in your next endeavors. Remember as you head off to college, every other freshman is just as nervous as you are. Every freshman is leaving their friends, families and communities behind and moving somewhere new and out of their comfort zone. Every student will be looking to make friends and will have just as many questions and nerves as you do. So, be open to making new friends, finding new interests and getting involved in new activities. Don’t be afraid to try new things where ever you are heading. Try out team in business plan competition Marietta College’s Sebastian Ziaja, of Lake Forest, was a member of the two-person team which won the final round of the College’s 2018 PioBiz, a business plan competition. Ziaja and his partner presented a plan for their company Oilfield Basics. The three judges selected Oilfield Basics as the overall winner and awarded them $8,000 to help start their new venture. Ziaja is majoring in petroleum engineering. DePauw University Students named to dean’s list The following local students were named to the 2018 Spring Semester dean’s list at DePauw University. The dean’s list recognizes students who achieve a semester grade point average of 3.5 or for a new club, take a class that will challenge you, apply for a job or internship you think you don’t have a shot at – you may surprise yourself. While looking ahead to a new and unfamiliar chapter may seem intimidating, know that everything will be OK. I remember when I was heading to Illinois State University, only five students from my high school had chosen to attend ISU, and of those students I was not super close with any of them. I remember feeling so scared that I wasn’t going to have any of my friends with me and was nervous it was going to be hard to make new friends and find my new normal. Within hours of my arrival at ISU, I knew I would be just fine. Every single student was so welcoming and so excited to meet new people. And guess what? Now that I am a college graduate, many of my best friends, who will one day be in my wedding, I met higher. Andrew Athenson, Caroline Grumhaus, Hannah Metzger, Colleen Morris, Eric Spehlmann and Kathryn Whalley, all of Lake Forest, and Meghan Mc- Grail, of Lake Bluff. So, take all the things you have learned, all the memories you have and bring them with you on your new adventure. But, don’t be afraid to make new friends and new memories.
