Nov-Dec 07 � Feature Story � Arizona Antique Shows Celebrating 5th Anniversary Promoting Phoenix Antique Market The Arizona Antique Shows are celebrating their 5th anniversary this month of owning and promoting the Phoenix Antique Market. Their upcoming November show will be on the 17th and 18th and the December show will be the 8th and 9th. These antique markets are held indoors and weather protected at 1826 W. McDowell Road, (19th Avenue & McDowell) in Phoenix. Hours are: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free. Producer Wanda Jones said she and her husband and partner, Robert, have had a very enjoyable experience the past five years. “When we bought and took over the Phoenix Market, we knew it would be hard work to rebuild,” she said. What they were not prepared for was the tremendous amount of support they would receive from the community. Robert said, after a long and hard road, the Phoenix Antique Market has finally become its own dog. “When we started the show here,” he explains, “people would call and ask for information on the ‘flea’ market at the fairgrounds. Five years later, patrons now call asking for information regarding the antique shows held at the fairgrounds. Our Phoenix shows have become nationally known as a buyers’ market to the serious collector and shop owner.” The Joneses’ Phoenix show has survived the stigma that once reined havoc over their Phoenix Antique Market. Wanda and Robert are dedicated and loyal to their customers’ needs whether they are the public or the exhibitor. In harsh economic times, they have survived the competition from eBay and, while major antique malls and single owner antique shops are closing, Arizona Antique Shows have continued to grow and maintain stability. Wanda believes the key to their success is their sensitivity to their customers’ suggestions. For the customer, Wanda and Robert understand they have no control over the state policies and fees at the fairgrounds. For example, the Joneses aren’t able to control or eliminate the parking fee so, in 2005, Wanda and Robert announced and initiated a ‘FREE’ admission policy at the Phoenix Antique Market, offering their customers a bargain for their patronage. This was a very innovative and risky venture yet proved to be successful. For the exhibitor base, Wanda and Robert announced a booth rent moratorium and have continued with these policies to date while many other shows in the country have increased their booth rates, parking and admissions fees. “We understand what it takes to travel to shows with the rising cost of fuel and lodging,” says Wanda. “We are one of the most, if not ‘the most’ affordable professional indoor antique shows in the western region of the United States with our booths starting at $ .86 per square foot,” Wanda said. While the Joneses have committed to these moratoriums on their admissions and booth rentals, the advertising campaigns remained heavy and include employing the Rita Sanders Agency, Wag the Dog Media Group, printed display ads in targeted antique industry periodicals, news print and television. Robert says, “A sustained advertising campaign is a key aspect of any successful business and you cannot be naïve enough to believe your customer base will continue to shop with you, especially living in such a transient state as ours, without spending a heavy ad budget. Arizona continues to grow and bring new antique customers to our state so we strive to reach these new customers. We also advertise heavily in California because we are experiencing an increased number of California residents moving to our great state annually. This is why we are now the fastest growing city in the nation.” The Joneses have been exhibiting at shows themselves for twenty years and promoting for the past ten years with show ownership coming five years ago. Wanda said their success as promoters is due to their experiences as exhibitors. She said, “There should be a prerequisite to promoting. Every promoter should experience shows as an exhibitor because they understand why booths should be 10.5 feet deep or why two major art dealers should not be placed next door to each other.” At the same time, she feels exhibitors should promote at least one show in their life and the world would be a happier place. There is a saying in the promotion world: If the exhibitor has a great show, the promoter is a hero. If however, the exhibitor’s show was less than acceptable, the promoter didn’t do anything right. Robert said living on both sides of the show fence has been a real eye opener for them and is a reason for their success in the Phoenix, Yuma and Flagstaff markets. Continued on page 6... 3
