Email: Bridget.Rutherford@starmedia.kiwi Superhomes open their doors to the public Eleven of the city’s most innovative and sustainable homes have opened their doors to the public to highlight smart technologies and modern building methods. The homes, which are scattered across the city, will showcase sustainable and affordable designs that benefit the homeowner and the environment. People can take a self-drive tour of the superhomes this weekend and next from 11am-4pm. Builders and designers will be on hand to explain the features of each and answer questions, so people can more easily create their own superhome. These super-insulated homes use the sun to stay warm and dry in winter and utilise shade and thermal mass to keep cool in summer. They feature efficient lighting and appliances to keep running costs low year round. Some homes use strong natural timbers, rainwater collection and solar systems to boost their earthquake resilience. “By experiencing these homes and seeing the technologies in action, people can better understand the benefits of having a warm, dry home with low running costs,” city council sustainability principal adviser Tony Moore said. “It’s exciting to have these homes open to our residents. One is a newly completed 10 Star home – one of the greenest homes in New Zealand. All of the homes will provide inspiration and demonstrate practical ways to have a healthy and more sustainable home.” The tours have been organised by the non-profit Superhome Movement in partnership with the city council and Homestar. The Superhome Movement focuses on positive change in the building industry. Superhome Movement founder Bob Burnett said the tour provided a rare opportunity for residents to experience high-performing homes not normally available to view. “These homes target ratings of 6 to 10 Homestar. “In contrast, almost all new homes in New Zealand are 3 Homestar and built to code minimum standards that are about 20 years out of date compared to other OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries.” Information about each home and a tour map is available on the Superhome website. Matariki celebrations in the red zone If you would like a celebrity chef to cook for you, why not head along to the Matariki in the red zone on Sunday? Richard Till will be helping prepare a feast for about 500 people at Avebury House and Richmond Community Gardens. The free feed will include a traditionally prepared hangi along with nourishing cuisine using locally grown produce cooked in the Avebury House kitchen. “Richard has been challenged to create something wonderful from produce supplied by those turning up on the day and from the community garden,” Avebury House Community Trust’s Michelle Whitaker said. Matariki in the Zone is a collaboration of Avebury House Community Trust, Richmond Community Garden and Avon-Ōtākaro Network. Matariki, which is known as the Māori New Year, will celebrate the Richmond Community Garden’s last harvest. Two new gardens will be opened on the day – a koru garden, and a raingarden. There would also be Maori crafts such as wood carving and flax weaving, live music and other activities. The event starts at 11am on Sunday with food available from noon. You won’t find any. Well not any that aren’t a money grab set up on a shingle turned mud pit anyway. In search of a Sunday afternoon beverage we headed to the Peg and after finding a park just on the other side of the Avon River on Montreal St we took on the newly former pub adventure maze. You see we thought it would be a short walk across the bridge and down Oxford Tce. However, due to road works you get to take on one of the city’s most challenging new mazes to get there. Thankfully the smart folk at the Peg have made life easier for some who can’t crack the maze with an ingenuous sign to guide you. As we approached the door we located an even more inviting sign stating there was mulled wine. Fantastic, what better way to blow off the dust accumulated from a big weekend. As we made our way to the warm comfort of the bar we inquired about the mull. “It’s almost ready,” we were told, before being invited to give a small taste test. Temperature wise she was almost there. I was then asked if it needed a bit more sugar. Being a fine maker of mulled wine myself, I agreed. “Just a wee bit more,” I said. But, when I then spotted a couple of sugar sachets you normally use for sweetening your coffee being opened, I became sceptical about how much sweetening would occur. While the mull heated up a bit more and digested the 50-odd sugar granules that had been added we tucked into a glass of Devil’s Staircase pinot noir and Matawhero Malbec. No complaints here and a good way to ease into the mull. It was time to taste the mull which was already acting as a great hand warmer on the way back to the table. As expected it hadn’t sweetened at all since the previous test, I would have also gone a bit heavier on the cinnamon sticks. But, we were warm and content, certainly not the worst mulled wine I’ve had at a pub. While working our way through the mull we looked over the bar snacks menu. However, we couldn’t go past the idea of the beef or lamb Sunday roast. We weren’t disappointed. The lamb fell apart and went a treat with the healthy sized Yorkshire pudding and gravy. I must admit the roast vegetables were a bit of a let-down but there was enough happening elsewhere to make up for it. By the time we departed what had been a quiet atmosphere was starting to pick up as others found their way to the end of the maze. I do feel for those impacted by serious road works. Let’s hope the new look Oxford Tce is worth the wait. All up, while it may be a hassle getting into the Peg these days, it’s worth venturing to if you’re looking for a Sunday fix. - Gordon Findlater New brewery opens in Sydenham New Indian for Edgeware Edgeware residents have a new Indian restaurant to try. Coriander’s Edgeware has been sold, and has reopened as Saket Indian Restaurant. The Edgeware Rd restaurant is open for lunch from noon to 2pm, and again from 5pm-10pm for dinner, with all the classic dishes to chose from. Coriander’s still has restaurants on St Asaph St and Bush Inn, as well as Rolleston and Hanmer Springs. The city’s newest brewery will celebrate its opening this weekend with live music, fermented food, tours and beverages. The Fermentist, a micro-brewery, cafe and tap room, will officially open on Colombo St in Sydenham tomorrow with a three-day celebration party. The product of Lion Breweries, The Fermentist aims to be a brewery with a difference by making what it does more transparent. Tomorrow’s party will begin at 4pm. There will be music from Adam McGrath and Holly Arrowsmith to name a few, along with tours of the brewery, craft beers and locally curated food tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. Italian evening at The Colombo Celebrate all things Italian next week at The Colombo. Ciao Italia 2018 will take place from 6pm- 9pm on Wednesday for an evening of Italian food, fashion and music. Hosted by the Italian Chamber of Commerce in New Zealand, Ciao Italia will have Italian imports for sale, institutions, along with New Zealand-based Italian producers and activities.
