The bulk of the submissions were in favour. And why would’t there be. The sports complex is a no-brainer. The project has been 10 years in the making and yesterday a hearings panel was scheduled to meet (it was after our deadline) to give the thumbs up or thumbs down for land to be leased for the project. But a stumbling continues to be money. The Eastern Community Sports and Recreation Inc has raised only a third of the $2.2 million they need. They have an ambitous plan to start work early next year. The city council is investigating the possibility of illuminating the historical landmark built in the 1930s. The idea was suggested at a Coastal-Burwood Community Board meeting by its chairwoman Kim Money. She said it would be nice to give the clock tower “some life in the evening” and it is a good opportunity to do it Kim Money while the tower is being upgraded. “Lighting can just enliven and make really beautiful statements of pieces,” she said. The city council started work on earthquake and historical damage repairs of the clock tower last month. They rae expected to be completed by September. It comes after the Coastal-Burwood Community Board noted public concern over the inconsistent night-time closing of the security gates at the park. MEMORIAL TREES AT QE II The Coastal-Burwood Community Board has asked the city council to investigate a process for residents who wish to plant a memorial tree at QE II Park. The board’s chairwoman Kim Money said there has been a request from a resident to plant a tree. She said the city council is looking at the master plan for the remaining area of QE II Park and is waiting to hear from city council staff about how the process fits in with the plan. “It is lovely to think that somebody wants to do that”. SWEEPING UP RICHMOND City council staff plan to sweep the streets in Richmond more often in a bid to keep the area tidier. It is asking for spare tools and donations. The money raised will go towards getting new windows and a door lock. The shed will be located next to Avebury House on Eveleyn Couzins Ave. If you are interested in joining the shed, get in touch with Paul Smith at menshed@aveburyhouse.co.nz. EDGEWARE POOL A Give-a-little campaign was set to launch yesterday in a bid to begin fundraising for the new Edgeware Pool. The pool has a budget of $5 million, which will see a 25m outdoor pool and a 14m indoor pool. A launch event to unveil the new logo was set to be held at the old pool entrance on Edgeware Rd. One of the longest serving members of the St Albans Swim Club and president for many years, Brian Gardner, attended the launch, along with Christchurch Central MP Duncan Webb, city councillors, Papanui-Innes Community Board members and other supporters from the community.
