Canterbury’s alternative
option in its draft Long
Term Plan to combine the
135 Burwood Hospital and
150 The Palms bus routes
Kath Strong – We have
lived at the QE II end of Beach
Rd for more than 45 years and
have always had a bus service at
the gate. We attempted once to
use the small red bus but found
it quite dangerous to get on,
and very scary getting off, due
to the height of the step to the
ground. The 1km walk to the
other side of Bower Ave in order
to get to a Christchurch Hospital
bus proved to be exhausting,
especially when you are
recuperating from an operation.
Ironically, the operation was
done at Burwood Hospital. The
post-operation appointments
were at Christchurch Hospital.
Now we park the car in New
“There are so many positive
outcomes for the community and
most of the submissions were
positive,” Mr Burley said.
Public consultation on leasing
parts of the domain took place
last month. Out of 62 submissions
received, 55 were in support
of the plan.
Five submissions indicated
general support for the proposal,
but expressed concerns about the
reduced availability of the tennis
courts for wider public use.
Mr Burley said he is not worried
about the hearing, the issue
is getting the funding together.
The organisation has raised
Brighton and catch the Yellow
Line. I have tried to explain
how we have been overlooked,
especially since the No 60 bus
was taken away and I am sure
we are not on our own. There
are several examples I could give
you. We can no longer take the
bus to New Brighton Club; can
no longer take the bus to New
Brighton Health Care; can no
longer take the bus to The Palms.
The list goes on. We are in our
70s now. Never thought our
public bus service would change
like this.
Pauline Morgan – I am in
my mid -80s and walk with the
aid of a walker. At the present
time, I can catch a bus from
Effingham St and will be in
about half the funding it needs
for the project, Mr Burley said.
The current tennis courts at the
domain were partially repaired
after the earthquakes.
Brighton in 6min. With the
new proposed route, I am told
I will have to catch the 60 bus
to the corner of Rookwood and
Bower Aves, get off the bus and
walk to QE II, and catch the 80
from there, which will no doubt
take me 40-50min to get to New
Brighton and the same back with
shopping. Not a good service.
Especially as there is a call for
people to support the shops in
New Brighton. It will also be
difficult for young mums with
prams and children.
A reader responds to an
article about the ongoing
roadworks at North Avon
Rd which continue to put
pressure on Richmond
businesses
Mr Burley said the state of the
courts was “not that bad”, but the
organisation wants a better quality
facility.
He said the only “caveat” is
Jane Ross – Thank you for
your article about Richmond
Village. Those businesses have
tried hard to keep the village
feel and it seems with no
compensation for their business
disruption. As the long-time
butcher who closed last time
said, they still had to pay their
full rent with no customers. The
city council has allowed the
works to proceed at the least cost
to it. The businesses definitely
should have been compensated.
The disruption has happened
repeatedly and for too long each
time. Protecting the livelihoods
of people after the earthquake is
just as important as repairing the
infrastructure.
Readers respond to an
article about the call
from cyclists for the
New Zealand Transport
Agency to change its
decision not to include a
separated cycleway along
Dyers Rd during the recent
upgrade
Bruce Burns – I am a
regular road cyclist along Dyers
Rd. To me, it is very safe. It has
a cycle lane and plenty of room,
not a problem.
Gary Knight – The presence
of the Christchurch Coastal
Pathway is a very innovative
project aimed at reducing
that residents don’t stop it from
running tournaments across all
four courts.
“You don’t want your resource
locked up because dad and son
come down and demand to get
access to their reserve so they can
play a game of tennis right smack
in the middle of when 200 people
are there for a tournament,” Mr
Burley said.
negative carbon environmental
footprints within our Garden
City in a very positive vein.
It is imperative therefore that
this concept is promoted at every
juncture. Cycleways, improved
footpaths and pedestrian
crossings, while commendable,
are minimal and leave a void in
the overall status of required
cycleway upgrades along Dyers
Rd.
Traffic volume, inclusive of
trailers with often insecure loads,
is a factor that should have been
considered with the sanctioning
of the 2017 $3.2 million Dyers
Rd widening. It should also
have been inclusive of advanced,
separate cycleways, a sentiment
reiterated by city councillor Yani
Johanson.
Within this context,
submissions made by cyclists to
the Long Term Plan pertaining
to this issue must be scrutinised
and appraised.
The original plans by NZTA
opposing Dyers Rd cycle lanes
should be redressed, reviewed
and overturned.
This is paramount for Dyers
Rd to become an integral part
of the New Brighton to Sumner
cycle route along the Coastal
Pathway.
Future criteria for NZTA
must surely include a
fundamental requirement to
have cycleways included in state
highways.
Rawhiti Domain sports facility goes to hearings panel
facility on part of Rawhiti
But he said the new facility
would have a better capacity than
there currently was for tennis.
The hearings panel is made
up of community board chairwoman
Kim Money, city councillor
David East and Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton Community
Board member Debbie Mora.
Cr East said it will likely take
several weeks for the decision to
make it to the community board
agenda.
