Dm STRATEGY: CONTENT SERVICES
The right platform
George Parapadakis, Director of Business Solutions Strategy at Alfresco, examines
the factors to consider before choosing a Content Services (CS) platform for ECM
Data created, stored and processed
by businesses today is continuing
to be amassed at a rapid pace. In
fact, experts predict that, by 2020, 1.7MB
of data will be created for every person on
the planet every second. Companies
looking to manage this data mountain
are deploying Content Services (CS)
software platforms to manage their
enterprise content management (ECM)
business requirements which collects,
organises, preserves and presents
information in a user-friendly way. This
process is particularly important in an era
when businesses are increasingly subject
to regulation and compliance, like GDPR
and MiFID II.
At the same time, the overall IT
landscape has undergone enormous
transformation. The world has become
almost exclusively digital and the
enterprise has had to adapt. IT teams
are changing how they design, develop
and deploy enterprise applications.
More and more workloads are being
shifted to the cloud.
In light of these trends, it's important for
CIOs and IT managers looking to purchase
CS to not only look at the capabilities
offered by various vendors, but also assess
how well it fits into today's IT environment.
So, what are the main factors you should
consider before purchasing a CS platform?
1. Does the solution fit your business needs?
First, it's critical that the CS platform you're
looking for actually fits your needs. A
modern ECM solution should allow any
type of user - for example including
business analysts or developers - to quickly
set up a workflow in a modern user
interface (UI).
Additionally, the platform should offer a
modern process engine that allows users
to implement more complex workflows,
surfaced through user-friendly interfaces. It
should be lightweight, fast and scalable.
It's also worth checking whether the
solution leverages the differentiating
capabilities of the cloud, or was designed
to suit on-premise deployment. If it can be
deployed in the cloud, what cloud
environments is it best suited to - and
does this fit with what your enterprise is
currently using?
2. Total cost of ownership
Cost is a factor in any enterprise IT
deployment - and ECM is no exception.
When purchasing a CS platform, end users
