Each session goes from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The camp will take place at Lincoln-Way Central’s football field. Fee is $75. Lincoln-Way West West wrestling continues to build strong foundation with camp Wrestlers entering kindergarten- through seventhgrade are welcome to join the Warriors’ youth wrestling camp, hosted by coach Brian Glynn. The three-day class takes place Monday, June 25 through Wednesday, June 27 between 9-10:30 a.m. The camp is open to all wrestlers of any level with the ultimate goal of improving each wrestler’s skill and top position. Tyler Vedder The Warriors wasn’t the biggest team in the area, but they were scrappy, and Vedder was one of the best when it came to scrappiness, as he finished the year with 376 digs in 401 attempts to earn firstteam honors for area liberos (see Page 43). 2. Jack Yurkanin Opponents usually game plan against the Central outside hitter, and he still delivered, notching 347 kills on the year, earning him a first-team spot on the publisher’s Team 22 list. 3. David Flores The senior setter said his job was easy this year because of the scorers West had at every position. Flores finished with 894 assists, which led him to be the best setter in the area on the Team 22 list. He’s grown and matured into a star player.” Matt Laude – Lincoln-Way West boys soccer coach, on soccer player Kyle Seymour Seymour brings leadership, explosiveness to Division III school Steve Millar Freelance Reporter Playing sports in college was always a goal for Kyle Seymour, but the recent graduate of Lincoln-Way West originally planned to play baseball at the next level. “My junior year, I decided to start focusing more on soccer instead,” Seymour said. “Everything was going well with the high school team and in club soccer, so I decided to really go after it in one sport and I decided soccer was the way to go.” The choice paid off as Seymour will begin his collegiate soccer career this fall at Aurora University, a NCAA Division III program. “I’m very excited to play in college,” he said. “When I visited Aurora, it felt right. I really like the coaches and players and I think I fit in really well. I want to come in and help the team.” Matt Laude had just one season with Seymour after taking over as Lincoln-Way West’s coach last fall, but he knew plenty about Seymour before coaching him. “Kyle was always a guy that stood out,” Laude said. “Being an assistant coach in the area and competing against him, I knew how good he was. “Watching him over the years, the development he’s had has been absolutely astronomical. He’s grown and matured into a star player.” Seymour took an atypical road to college soccer. Compared to most of his teammates and opponents, he was a relative novice in the sport entering high school. “I played a little bit when I was very young, but I stopped playing,” he said. “I played football in seventh and eighth grade.” As a freshman, Seymour made a spur-of-the-moment choice to get back into soccer. “I decided on the day that tryouts began that I wanted to go try out,” he said. “I just wanted to give it a shot and I figured it’d be fun.” Seymour’s athleticism helped him overcome any rustiness on the soccer field, and he surpassed his own expectations when he was put on the varsity team as a freshman. “Playing varsity as a freshman was crazy,” he said. “I didn’t expect it, but it helped me so much as a player. That’s what changed everything and that’s what made me having a soccer career like this possible.” Seymour’s first career goal, a clutch score against a rival, stands out in his mind. “I scored the winning goal in double overtime against Andrew,” he said. “I’ll always remember that.” Over his four years at West, Seymour came a long way as a soccer player. “I feel like I completely Tune In Lincoln-Way West grad Kyle Seymour scored 17 goals and added six assists for the Warriors last fall. I got stronger with the ball, my shot got stronger and I just became a better player in every way.” Seymour was a captain his last two seasons at West. We pushed each other and the rest of our teammates, worked really hard and we were able to do some good things.” One of the biggest highlights of his senior season, Seymour said, was when the Warriors won their bracket in the PepsiCo Showdown. Seymour has a busy summer ahead of him as he preps for college. “I’ve got a workout plan that Aurora gave me that I’ll be doing,” he said. “Then I have a U23 team that I’m playing with two or three Index 44 – Sports Briefs 42 – Athlete of the Week times a week, keeping my game sharp.” Seymour knows a big challenge is right around the corner, and he can’t wait to get started. “I’m excited for the level of competition in college,” he said. “I know it’s going to be much different than high school. Everyone’s going to be really good, and I’m really looking forward to it. “I want to come in and get into the flow of things right away this fall, get used to managing my time with soccer and school, and hopefully be able to beat out some of the older guys for some playing time.” FASTBREAK is compiled by Editor James Sanchez, james@newlenoxpatriot.com.
