Second annual Winnetka
Music Festival wows thousands
Sixteen-year-old Glenbrook North High School student
Carly Meyer gave an operatic performance at the
Winnetka Community House. She was recently named
best actress by Broadway in Chicago at an Illinois
musical theater awards competition.
Despite an intense heatwave,
more than 16,000
people flooded the streets
of downtown Winnetka as
music filled the air at the
Winnetka Music Festival
Friday-Saturday, June 15-
16.
The free, boutique festival
featured 40 of the
nation’s top emerging musicians,
representing 28
touring bands which performed
on five stages.
Winnetka’s Val Haller,
popularly known for her
Valslist music program,
organized the festival,
collaborating with the
Village of Winnetka,
the Winnetka-Northfield
Chamber of Commerce
and the Winnetka Park
District.
From sets from local
musicians to bands which
have performed at national
festivals from coast to
coast, the Winnetka Music
Festival had it all —
an eclectic blend of rock,
pop, country, electronic
dance and throwback
sounds.
A Thousand Horses,
which has opened for Jason
Aldean and Kid Rock,
performed their contemporary
country mix on
Friday night. And, this
year’s big Saturday performance
was ZZ Ward,
a “fedora-rocking, guitar
shredding” woman who
has shared the stage with
performers from Kendrick
Lamar to Eric Clapton,
been featured on “The Tonight
Show” and “Jimmy
Kimmel Live” and performed
at Coachella and
Bonnaroo.
Performer James Lanman,
from the San Francisco
Bay area, performed
his “neo soul” sounds for
a Saturday evening set.
He said his style is rooted
in Motown.
“I write my own songs;
70 percent are original
and the others are a redo
like a classic,” said Lanman,
who sings and plays
the acoustic guitar.
Lanman is so serious
about his music, he sold
everything he owned and
put the money into buying
a van so he could tour the
U.S. and Canada.
“Val Haller saw me perform
in Michigan and told
me about this festival,” he
said. “She is the patron
saint of emerging musicians.”
