4 | June 21, 2018 | The winnetka Current news winnetkacurrent.com No dampening on Winnetka spirits Annual Children’s Fair a hit despite wet weather Alexa Burnell Freelance Reporter When Lizzie Kelley, co-chair of the Winnetka Community Nursery School Children’s Fair, awoke on the morning of June 8 only to see gloomy skies and hear rumbles of thunder, she immediately wondered if Mother Nature was going to literally rain on her parade. But, much to her delight, regardless of a short burst of downpours, the crowds came, the music played and a 73-year tradition carried on, putting a smile on the faces of the hundreds of families who enjoyed this year’s games, rides, foods and fun. “This fair is a longstanding tradition that the entire community enjoys, so I am so glad that the weather wasn’t as bad as we originally thought,” Kelley said. “This event has a special place in my heart. I went to Greeley School and have attended since I was a kid, as has my co-chair, Emily Rose. It is very special for us to be here with our own kids, watching all these families having such an amazing time.” As Kelley looked over the scene, kids poured onto the Winnetka Village Green. Toddlers and preschoolers enjoyed activities like the candy castle, bounce houses, face painting and go fish. PHOTOS BY RHONDA HOLCOMB/22ND CENTURY MEDIA Emerson Beck, 5, of Winnetka, rides Jaeger the camel. manned their own booth for the second year in a row, encouraging youngsters to play with naturebased items like sand and logs, while showing slightly older youngsters how to make art on an old record player. “This fair is a great way for us to talk to families about play-based school Kate Hagenah, of Winnetka, dances with her sons Theo, 3, and Ben, 6, as her husband, Chris, leads his band Chino Palamino in song. and show kids just how fun simple materials can be,” said co-director Holly Bressler. “We are offering sensory experimentation with a variety of different materials, reminding all just how educational simple play can be.” Older children enjoyed the games and various opportunities to win prizes, such as emoji pillows, wacky pens, growing dinosaurs and mood rings. “I really like all the games and prizes that I have won,” said 9-yearold Kate Swain, of Wilmette. “There is so much to do here; I’m having so much fun with my friends.” Preteens and teens set off on their own, hitting the swings, strawberry twirl, giant slides and a new climbing wall, all the while filling up on some American favorites like hot dogs, cotton candy and snow cones. As the evening sun began to set, local dad band, Chino Palomino, played classic rock tunes, as Coldwell Banker, the event’s food sponsor, worked alongside food and beverage organizer and Winnetka Community Nursery School parent, Kristen Bilton. “We recently moved here from the city and I am enjoying my first year, watching all these families enjoy such a wonderful tradition together,” Bilton said. “There is nothing better than watching kids run across the Village Green, kicking off the summer and enjoying games, rides, music, food and more. I can see why this event has carried on for 73 years. It’s magical.”
